I had a hospital birth with no drugs, but DD ended up in the NICU for 9 days. She had a small nasal passage and had a hard time breathing (she eventually had surgery at 11 wks old). At the end of the day, though I would love a birth center or home birth in theory since I don't want interventions if I can avoid them, I was happy to have experts there right away to check out my daughter!

I feel like if I had had my DS in a 3rd world country we might have died. I pushed him for 4 hours and couldnt get him out without the help of a vacuum so Im not sure what would have happened if he couldnt get out. Also he had breastfeeding issues so even after he was born he would have struggled if I didnt have the help of lactation consultants and formula. My DD was an easier quicker birth and while I still pushed an hour she came out on her own. I did both without epidurals though so at least that was alright

I had a hospital birth with complications. I would not have survived the medevil version of DD's birth.
She was LGA and posterior. My water started leaking Friday, I was admitted Saturday, given pitocin early Sunday, labored all day Monday, her heartbeat started to weaken, had a c-section just after midnight Tuesday.

I will only give birth again in a hospital.

I needed a c-section due to getting a fever and baby in distress, then LO was sent to NICU due to breathing issues. I'm glad I was in the hosptial especially due to her breathing, I'm not sure what would have happened had we had her at home and not gone in for an emergency c-section to get her out quickly.

I had a hospital birth with epidural and pitocin (which I begged for after labor stalling for 7-8 hours) My Doctor was fine waiting on the Pitocin because my baby's heart rate was always rock steady and I had no other complications, but I was ready to get the show on the road at that point (having been in labor for 24 hours already).

No complications, just the stitching. But I was very pleased with my epidural so I would never do a home birth anyway.

I delivered in a hospital with a midwife. Had a long, PROM labor that world have landed me a c/s had I been with an OB (rules mandate that you have to have the baby within 24 hours of water breaking - MWs let me go much longer because DD's heart rate was good). Ended up with a med-free birth with only slight tearing (I think I had 2-3 stitches), but I had a pp hemorrhage that required a blood transfusion.

Really glad I was in a hospital.

I had a hospital birth and it was fine. I was induced for potential iugr so there was an increased risk DS would not tolerate labor or would need attention after birth. Everything was perfect though. DS just needed his sugar level tested often because of his size but they all came out normal.

I delivered in a hospital with a midwife. This way, it was really likely that I would get the natural birth that I wanted and still have things on hand should an emergency arise. My midwife stitched whatever small tears I had, and lost a good amount of blood that made me very weak. If we have another I will also use a midwife in a hospital. It was a good compromise for me.

Baby didn't have to go to NICU, but did need suctioning. She wasn't breathing and was limp/purple when she came out. DIdn't need air though, so if we were at home she still might have been fine (I think there is some debate about how useful suctioning is).
Regardless, I was glad to be in the room with a pediatric team and because of that and some other recent experiences will give birth in the hospital next time, too. My best friend is a home birth midwife, and I'd considered doing a homebirth with her next time. But I had a very positive hospital experience and appreciated the high level of skill available for pediatric care if needed.

J was a big baby, posterior and was born with a collapsed lung. I had over 100 stitches and BP wouldn't return to normal after giving birth.

C got stuck and they had to deliver her with forceps. She had shoulder dystocia and was born feverish, so we were both on antibiotics for 5 days after delivery. I had a postpartum hemorrhage after my uterus wouldn't contract back down and easily could have bled out, I needed a blood transfusion after. 2 weeks after she was born, I got a uterine infection from retained placenta and almost went into septic shock. I was hospitalized again for 4 days and had to have an emergency D&C.

So.... If the bleeding wouldn't have killed me, the infection would have. Thank god for modern medicine.

Med free hospital birth where I had to get pitocin to get my uterus to contract after giving birth to stop bleeding. A couple stitches. I'm pretty sure any licensed midwife would have been able to do the same for me at home.

Just wanted to chime in that it isn't necessarily midwife OR hospital. I'm not comfortable with a home birth due to fear of complications-- but I go to a midwife practice who delivers in a hospital. So, all the midwife-y goodness with all the back-up support of a hospital, if needed :)

I had a hospital birth and neither of us needed any major care after- I had a couple of stitches for a small tear but I believe a midwife could have done it at home. There was meconium in my water when it broke, so there were people on hand to check LO right away but she was fine and didn't need special treatment at all. I delivered without drugs, but they did need to use the vacuum at the end as her heartrate was dropping.

So, I think we would have been absolutely fine at home, but there would have been some scary moments for me. I don't know if meconium in the water is a reason to transfer or not?

I had a hospital birth attended by two midwives and was diagnosed as failure to progress after 15 hours of labour (20 hours since my water broke). I had an epidural and LO was delivered by ventouse after 27 hours of labour and two hours of pushing. I needed an epidural but otherwise no complications and both baby and I were fine.

@Mrs. Chipmunk: Interestingly enough my midwife specialises in home birth and when I asked her what would have happened had I been birthing at home, her response was "you would've been transferred because you we're no longer safe to be at home".

I did have a few problems but I don't think they would have happened if I hadn't been induced and on drugs. Originally the plan was to birth at a birth center with a midwife. I think it would have gone fine otherwise.

But I had pre-e and had an emergency induction, I passed out twice and J couldn't regulate body temp (I think due to the mag), and he was in the incubator for awhile.

I had a hospital birth but was on a magnesium drip to prevent seizures with pre-eclampsia and finally an induction for HELLP syndrome. M was 36 weeks and did not need to go to NICU, but I was very happy to know that the NICU team was at the delivery.

I know that the majority of home births are problem-free, but I'm an ICU nurse and always seeing the worst-case scenarios. I would never consider a home birth.
