I think I've seen special bannister mounting kits on Amazon too. I use north gates http://amzn.com/B000PRUAFI

@Mrs.KMM: We have TERRIBLE basement stairs. And they'll be staying as they are until we re-do the basement (which we're in no hurry to do). Luckily DH is very handy, and does woodworking as a hobby. I'm going to have him make a barn door baby gate. It's super cute and really not that much work, then we can pick the closing method (most likely same as a fence gate latch) so it'll be easy to open and close.

The previous homeowners left us with something like this at the top of the stairs. It's easy to open and close.

We have this one at the top of our stairs:

http://www.amazon.com/Regalo-Stairs-Expandable-Metal-Mounting/dp/B003VNKLI4/

It works great! Easy to open and close and I like that the whole thing opens, not just one center section. Plus the side that attaches to the banister didn't damage it at all, though we had to drill into the wall side (also, we ended up having to buy 3" screws for the wall side because the screws that came with it were too short for us). Also, I believe this gate comes with hardware for having banisters on both sides as well, so you wouldn't have to screw in at all on the bottom stairs.

DH and I are starting to look into child-proofing for our DD. we have two sets of stairs we need to gate off (the stairs leading to our basement are open).

The top of each stairwell will require attaching a gate to 1 wall and 1 bannister. The bottom of both stairwells have no wall to attach to - just the bannister on each side.

What baby gate do you have and do you like it? Is it easy for you to open and close to pass through?

We never gated her into a particular area. She loves to stick to my side so I really don't have to worry about her getting into trouble which is both good...and bad because it's hard for me to get anything done. But hey, good in that our house still looks like an adult house and we can buy nice stuff and leave it out -- she doesn't touch it!

We just babyproofed the first floor like crazy. RJ wasn't super mobile when he was crawling. We had a baby gate at the stairs, and when he was able to pull that down we installed a more sturdy gate with a closeable door... but we don't even close it now because he doesn't really go up the stairs. He knows upstairs = bedtime! Haha.

My LO isn't crawling yet, but if I'm doing stuff I'll have her in an area where I can see her and I know everything is safe. If I'm not doing housework, I'll open the gates and let her go so I can follow her around.

We recently bought some baby gates and gated off our entire living room so that LO could have as much room to practice crawling, cruising and eventually walking. (Our coffee table and rug are gone and we put down playmats within this area).

LO has already started to rattle the sides of the gates wanting to be let out. I'm assuming he will want out more as he starts to walk and become a toddler. (He is 10 months old now).

Question - do you have a gated play area and if so, when do you plan on letting baby out of gated play area. If you do not have one, how do you get anything done around the house while watching baby to make sure he/she does not get into anything he/she should not get into? We're in the process of baby proofing but there are some items I am not sure what to do with...like dog food bowl, shoe rack, room air filter...things that need to be left on the floor but are too dirty or fragile for baby.)

Do you watch your baby like a hawk or let him roam around the house?
