It doesn't confirm gender per se. My baby ended up being opposite. It's an old wives tale, but still fun as long as you don't go buy a bunch of pink or blue because of it!

If you search for the "Ramzi Roundup" thread the people there might be able to tell you, but I think you're too far along - it's supposed to be done from an early ultrasound, like six weeks, and this looks much further. And it won't "confirm" gender, it's just an indicator that many people think is an old wive's tale. You might also want to crop the image so we can't see your full name.

@night cheese: I think it is great you are trying to educate people, but, on boards like this, choice of words isn't used to exclude. It is more about knowing your audience and tweaking your message so it is more impactful.

Frankly, I find "PSA" type posts annoying. It is one thing to write something privately to a member to bring their choice of words to their attention, but this kind of post assumes everyone is ignorant. It also doesn't take into account the numerous times the discussion has already been had.

@anandam: good point. The parties reveal the sex, but in a very gender-specific way.

@night cheese: I don't even recall what I ask people. But, I have yet to hear a mom or dad to be respond with we are having a "male" or a "female." People always says "boy" or "girl". So, if boy or girl is equivalent to man or woman, aren't the parents to be just as guilty of confusing sex and gender?

@Looch - For me, it's not about getting worked up about the words that strangers use on the internet; it's my small way of trying to spread the (very important, IMO) message that sex and gender are not the same thing. Most people who use it incorrectly simply don't know, and I'm not angry or judgmental about that. I would just like, in my own insignificant way, to educate even a handful of people on an issue that is very important to me.

It may not seem like an important difference to most people. But it's such an important distinction to anyone who is not cisgender, because those are words that could literally define their identity.

Most of us in this thread (I assume, correct me if I'm wrong), are physically female and identify as female, so it may not be as personally important to use the sex vs. gender distinction. But imagine someone who was born as a woman, who has female sex organs and two X chromosomes, etc., but who identifies as a male. To that person, it may be a VERY important distinction as it's a major part of their identity - i.e. their sex is female but their gender is male.

On another note, I really wish that the English language had genderless pronouns.

@TemperanceBrennan: Me too! My family is SUPER gendered on everything, to the point that several family members make fun of my cousin's little boy (he's like 3 or 4?) if he cries and goes to his mother for comfort. They tell him to man up. Since I want nothing to do with that, being team green should at least force them to hold off on gendered gifts until after they're born!

I'd never actually heard this explanation, so thanks for that @night cheese! I will probably still say gender more than I should, since I was raised uber-conservative and struggle with the word sex. (I ask DH if he wants sexy times, I can't even say it with him!) But I need to work on it and you gave me some good reasons!

I agree, but I also realize that many folks I know IRL either 1- don't understand the difference, 2- think that it's some "hippie liberal thing" that was made up by my college, or 3- are just reaaaally uncomfortable saying the word sex. Very much like @Mae: said.

However, if someone asks about the gender or if we've had a gender scan, we respond that we were excited to find out the sex of the baby. I figure that each time they hear it in a "not-on-my-platform" way, it'll become a little less squicky to them to use the word sex in regular conversation.

This might be a bit silly, but this is one of the reasons we are on team green. I want to try to avoid any expectations for my little boy or little girl. I can just picture my baby and not have any gender expectation limitations.

@Mrs.Someone: I feel the same way. I understand the difference. I have no issue with people identifying with a gender different than their sex. But I think "gender" is just the easier/more polite term to use for most of these things and I don't think using the term identifies any lack of support for those in the LGBTQ community. I think it is just acknowledging that for 95+% of the population gender and sex are the same thing. (I.e. I will assume that a person's gender is the same as their sex until told otherwise. And when/if told otherwise, my response will be: Cool. You wanna grab some pizza?)

Well, the parties usually involve a heck of a lot of pink and blue and fantasies of ballet versus football, so they actually are gender predictions and gender reveal parties. Imposed gender, perhaps, but gender nonetheless. Nobody spends much of the party discussing chromosomes or genitalia. When people find out their fetus is male, their excitement is not about the endocrine profile, it's about their imaginings of gender expression.
