@LovelyPlum: Yeah, I have GERD too. I was going through a lot of stress after DH's accident and eating terribly, so I just started taking Prilosec OTC all the time. My GP eventually switched me to prescription strength omeprazole, but I was off of it for almost a month before becoming pregnant and doing ok. This reflux is way more intense and persistent :(

@macintosh: I have GERD, so take this for what it's worth. I was on Zantac 150 before getting pregnant and had to switch to Prilosec around 20 weeks. I had awful nausea, and the heartburn compounded it. I felt horrible and would not have done well without meds. I hope you can get some relief!

@macintosh: I have reflux ordinarily and it gets really bad when I am pregnant. I took loads of Zantac with my first, and now I am on a pregnancy-compatible prescription drug - dexalant. With the Zantac, my GI and OB approved a dose of 600 mgs - 300 twice a day.

@macintosh: I got heartburn at 5 weeks and it went away around 14-15 weeks. Nausea/vomiting during that time just exacerbated it. Tum wouldn't touch it. I started out with Zantac 75 and had to move up to Zantac 150. At 18 weeks now I don't take anything.

I hope you get some reprieve! I know I was scared it would stay the whole pregnancy, especially because I'd only heard of people getting it in the 3rd tri.

I am really early (5 weeks tomorrow) but I've had really bad reflux for the past few days. Tums barely put a dent in it. The only thing that helps is if I lay down on my left side. It's also making me nauseous.

Did anyone have reflux/heartburn this early? Did you manage it yourself and did it continue through the whole pregnancy? If this continues I'm thinking of asking my doc I can try Zantac.

@ladyfingers: Have you started the elimination diet yet? Sorry about LO's issues, I've heard the diet is very hard but very worth it if you can get it under control.

@Mrs Green Grass: I think if it's an intolerance/allergy I can get under control with diet, I'd rather stop the Zantac. I don't honestly think he has reflux -- he doesn't spit up excessively, never vomits, has no trouble sleeping, isn't gassier than other babies, etc. We'll see.

Aw, I'm sorry! LO has been gaining well and seems mostly happy but in the last week has been very distressed when breastfeeding. He pulls and pushes and writhes until he accidentally pops off, then we rinse and repeat. I figured it was due to his 6-week growth spurt, but then I noticed he was having green, stringy poop. We went to the ped a few days ago and she said he may have reflux and prescribed Zantac (which I hate giving him) but then she tested and found blood in his stool. She thought it may be infectious colitis from a tummy bug and to give it a week and if no better, she suspects mspi (milk soy protein intolerance). The stool is really the only indicator - no rashes, colic, sleeplessness, etc. I'm stressed and have been trying block feeding on a theory that he was getting too much foremilk, and trying different positions in case I have an over active letdown. Meanwhile his stool is back to yellow but is even more mucousy today and still has visible (brown) blood. He seems happy, but it's stressful and even more so knowing it could be what I'm eating. So I'm cutting out obvious dairy as of today so I'll have a head start if the ped has me start an elimination diet next week.

We do! A's harness has made positioning extremely hard and she won't take a bottle so have no way of getting extra calories in her. She's still gaining weight but not as quickly as she should and she's 10th percentile. It affects supply as well because the less she eats, the less I make. It's such a stressor, constantly worrying about how much/little she eats!

LO has severe reflux and I knew before getting him home from the NICU that feeding would be extremely stressful. We almost got a g-tube before coming home.

Some days are great. He eats like a champ. On others, he'll barely take over an ounce per feeding. He doesn't throw up often, but when he does it stresses me out even more because he needs the calories so badly!

He's currently averaging about 18 ounces a day on 22 calorie formula with 1/4 bm added (normal formula, BM is about 20 calories). He's eating 10 times a day (4 hours at night, 2 to 2 1/2 during the day) and taking a little under 2 ounces each time. He's still gaining weight, but a little slower than the ped would like. He's 9lb, 1oz, 8 weeks adjusted (9th percentile).

I would love to have a place to chat about how it's going. Anyone else having feeding issues?
