Our ped had us start with soft soled shoes and we loved Roebeez. The soft leather didn't restrict her from still "feeling" and "learning" to walk according to our ped. We did not use socks as this was late spring/summer. Absolutely loved Robeez.

I feel like I wasted a ton of money on shoes, my son didn't do well with the Robeez soft soled shoes because his foot was really thick, so I brought him to a specialty kids shoe store just to get an idea of what was out there and what size he truly was. We did the best with athletic sneakers when it was all said and done.

DD1 wore mostly moccasins until at least 1.5 and they last a while because the soft leather stretches. She wore them with and without socks. I have some new moccasins for DD2 (8 months) because DD1 wore them out once she started walking everywhere and I also bought some Piper & Finn oxfords for nicer occasions (they're $$ if full price but sooo adorable - I bought on clearance).

The only shoes I buy more than 1 size up in are tennis shoes (we liked New Balance once she was running around) since they generally wear tennis shoes year-round and eventually the Old Navy jellies since she wears them all spring/summer/fall (but we're in the south). I get the jellies on sale/clearance so if we can't wear one pair, I'm only out like $4.

We used soft-soled Robeez for the first 4 months of LO1 walking. Then it got hot, so we switched to hard-soled sandals... we don't have him wear shoes indoors almost ever. I think it's not recommended, for proper foot motion development?

We bought Robeez on Amazon and they weren't too expensive.

DS2 wore Robeez in the 6-12 month size (the 12-18 month size is HUGE!) for a good long while - like until 16 months old? Then we finally got him some Stride Rite SRTs on sale (I only buy them on sale) for about $20-25 bucks.

I generally like to get the first pair of sneakers in the store to size and try on because turns out both my kids have wide feet and they had to wear much bigger shoes than the size you'd wear based on the length of your foot alone. But I wait until they are confidently walking well.

You can get nicely used kid shoes on eBay for $10-15 bucks once you know their sizing. I also sized up on a pair of Keens for DS2 last summer (he was a size 5 then but I got him 6s) and he wore them big last summer (since the ankle strap cinches) and he fits them fine currently. I think they should (fingers crossed) last most of this summer because you don't wear socks with them and they're generously sized and wide in the toe.

I don't like all-velcro strap shoes at this age. They like to play with the velcro and take off their shoes constantly because its fun. Rather, I like a shoe that has the elasticized laces that you slip on to the foot, with a velcro strap at the ankle for a secure fit. That way if they play with the velcro strap, the shoe will still stay on.

All velcro shoes are just useful now at DS1's age (3.5 years old) because they can put their shoes on and off themselves.

Go to Walmart and get the Garanimals brand. They are affordable and hold up well. We prefer them to Stride Right. They also have sizes to help you figure out the sizing.

We get 2 pairs of shoes in each size--either sneakers and sandals or two sneakers. We look for support over fashion because LO is a klutz

I've always loved the Stride Rite line for Target, and they're usually in the $20 range. My daughter still wears them now at 2.5.

I bought an off brand pair of leather moccasins when she was crawling, and I hated them. They were really hard to get on and off. I realize I'm in the minority on that one.

@nutmeg36: I have put mine in them without socks. I guess it depends. It was late fall/beginning of winter when both my kids started walking so I could get away without socks for quick trip outs. I see you're in the NE too; as long as they're comfy, personally I'm okay without socks...

I forget to add for DD2 had a pair of minnetonka (sp) fringe suede moc's (I got from Nordstrom) and they were super cute/sturdy.

We always start with the soft soled moccasins. Robeez, or other like brands. For DD1 I actually found a great in-between sofe/hard soles called Jack & Lily. It's got another rubber layer so it was more sturdy, but still super flexible. I got them on Zulilly.

Then we went onto sneakers or Stride Rite.

Sizing seemed to vary enough that I just took him to the store and held them up to his feet until I found something that looked like it was right. That is when the fight started of trying to get something on his foot that he had never had before.

I have always bought him Cat & Jack from Target, I almost always catch them on a sale too. They hold up well for as long as they will fit him and they aren't as much as Stride Rite.

His first pair was from Carters (on sale) and they had a sole that was kind of rubbery so not soleless but not a hard sole.

And I have tried stocking up on shoes, like stride rite for Target, when I see them on clearance but I have the problem that my kid’s feet grow really slowly so I risk buying the wrong season. But if you see the Surprize stride rite ones for less than $10, definitely pick them up.

Soft soles, even for outside. We had good luck with Robeez and she wore them outside and it was fine as long as it wasn’t wet. Robeez has a size chart you can print and you can get certain ones for $20 on Amazon w/ free returns. They also last for awhile bc they are elastic so they don’t outgrow them immediately. Plus you can get them used bc a lot of people register for them but never use them because their kids walk later or have bigger/smaller feet.

So, my 10m DD has recently started walking (ahhh). 99% of the time we have her walking either barefoot or in grippy socks, especially as she's learning foot/ankle control. However, when we're not at home, I think I'd like her to have *something* on her feet other than socks (which she likes to pull off and suck on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ).

So, first question: how do I do sizing?! Does sizing vary for baby shoes depending on brand? We ordered her 11cm sandals for Easter (from Amazon for like $3) that fit her pretty well, but who knows for how long? We bought them knowing they'd likely be a 1-time wear.

Second Question: Are there any (affordable) brands that I should totally stock up on? We are on one income right now, so I can't afford to spend $40 on like, stride right shoes that will fit her for all of 10 minutes. I'd LOVE to find a $15-20 shoe that could last her for a few months, but that's probably a pipe dream (she just grows so stinkin' fast!)

Third Question: hard soles? soft soles? I've read different things and I'm terribly confused.

Thank you ahead of time!

ETA: we're also in the Northeast US, so our weather is straight unpredictable like 98% of the time. It snowed on Friday, was 50* out yesterday, and was 29* this morning.
