Just remembered that I said I'd check back after I got my results. As I suspected, based on the fact that I hadn't heard anything from my midwife's office, I found out at my last midwife appointment that I passed. And it turns out I passed by a LOT.

So, in my case, no false positive, but I also have not been overly strict about sugar intake lately, so that may very well have contributed to the outcome.

@hergreenapples: That stinks that you didn't feel well after the drink! Not everyone who feels ill fails so you'll probably be fine. Good luck!

Just wanted to follow up as I just got back from my one-hour test. It's been about 1.5 hours since I drank the glucola and I'm starting to feeling normal again. The first 45 minutes to an hour after drinking it were pretty unpleasant: mild nausea and just a general feeling of grossness that I get when I over-indulge in sugar. The lab tech couldn't seem to understand why I would react this way......um, probably because my body isn't used to taking a 100g bolus of glucose!

Anyhow, hopefully my results come back normal, I'll update again once I have them. If they don't, I'm going to ask for the Hb1Ac test that Robb Wolf talks about in this blog post: http://robbwolf.com/2008/06/25/gestational-diabetes/

Interesting! I hadn't thought about that but it totally makes sense. I decided to NOT take the GD test because like you I presented no risk factors and was/am healthy and at a good weight.

My midwife assured me that if I did had GD other symptoms present itself, such as excess weight gain and excess fluid.

I'm not paleo but I do generally try to eat pretty low sugar. I just had my normal meals prior to the test. For breakfast I had 2 eggs. I took the glucose drink and felt fine and passed by a lot. The drink is only 50g of sugar, which really isn't that much considering it's about as much as one can of Coke. I know some people say it is a horrible thing but I just want to put it out there that to me, it tasted fine and I felt fine and it was a simple process. Since your midwife assesses you as low risk, if you failed the test, she'd probably just have you re-test or check your blood sugar a few times with a monitor and if all those numbers are fine then you're good to go.

@Sammyfab: I guess I just feel that if there's something that could negatively affect my baby's health I would want to know about it sooner rather than later? I totally understand your choice to opt out though - I certainly considered it. And I'm also just hopeful that my numbers will come back normal and then it will be another worry I can put out of my mind :)

@Revel: Yeah, I've read some stuff along those same lines (one I remember specifically was from Mark Sisson). Basically our bodies aren't used to processing massive amounts of processed sugar so when you take the glucola sugar bomb it can really spike your levels.

@Thehistoryofus: Yeah, I'm thinking I'll just be sure to have some sweet potatoes, apples and maybe some bananas over the next few days. Plan to go for the test sometime next week.

Although I wasn't paleo/primal during my pregnancy, I was for almost a year prior to succumbing to bread cravings brought on by my first tri nausea! Anyway, I opted not to do GD testing because I was very low-risk...and because i've heard it's an awful process. Is there a reason why you want to do the testing aside from curiosity?

Couldn't you work on increasing carb intake with the week or so leading up? Obviously still paleo/primal but extra veggies and such?

I'm interested to hear the responses if anyone has any experience. I don't have any specific experience as I'm just 19w in my first pregnancy.

I do know that when I was being strict with paleo and eating pretty low carb I did have a slightly elevated fasting blood sugar once at the doctor. I did some research and there seems to be a correlation between low carb and false high fasting readings. This article talks about that under section on fasting blood sugar. Kresser's cholesterol articles are crazy good if you've never read them:

For all the pregnant paleo ladies and moms who ate paleo while pregnant:

At my most recent midwife appointment we had a long conversation about GD testing. My midwife left the decision of whether or not to get tested up to me, as I am very healthy and have no risk factors for GD or family history that suggests I am at risk of developing it.

I think I will go ahead and do the one-hour test though, because I would definitely want to know if I did have GD.

I have done a lot of reading, and also discussed with my midwife, the fact that many paleo women seem to get false positives on their GD tests, as our bodies are not used to processing large amounts of refined sugar.

I'm thinking I'll eat my normal breakfast of a crustless quiche (probably spinach) before the test. However, I've heard others in the paleo community say that it might to wise to increase carb intake for three days before the test so that your body is better conditioned to respond to carbohydrates. I'm certainly not trying to "trick" the test, but I just want to get the most accurate results from what is, by my understanding, a less-than-accurate testing protocol.

Just looking for any insight anyone can offer: Did you do the GD testing? Did it come back normal? Did you get a false positive and have to do the three-hour test? Any advice?
