@Rainbow Sprinkles: Which ones do you take?

I think what I will end up doing is taking the vitafusion prenatals, and then when I actually do get pregnant, find out from my doctor if she'd rather me switch to something with iron, or take a supplement.

I mostly want to get in the habit of taking a vitamin too, but I feel that if I start taking the prenatals then I'll just be ready once things start to happen for us!

I take Vitafusion gummies and a DHA supplement. My doctor said you don't need to take the DHA until you are further along in your pregnancy though so if I were you I'd just take the gummies. I hate swallowing pills too.

Can you see if you can get a prescription for folic acid, separate from prenatals? If so, I'd get that, calcium gummies (Vita Fusion has decent ones) and then Floradix liquid for iron.

I initially took the gummies, but found them to get expensive really quickly. I switched to a normal vitamin (Rainbow Light) and split the pills in half and always took with food. I then switched to NatureMade since their pills are smaller in size.

I took the Nature Made prenatals because it's one soft gel pull a day and that was WAY easier to swallow than the hard pills. It has iron so I would take the gummy calcium fiber prenatal chews at a separate time of day to help absorption and that worked really well for most of my pregnancy after my awful MS passed. My doctor did say if my MS was bad I could just take a folic acid until 20 weeks because prenatals were for my health and not baby - baby was gonna suck whatever it needed from me anyway!

I took gummy prenatals and did not supplement at first. I ended up being iron deficient and eventually had to add iron supplements (but that is very common).

I don't think adults need to drink milk every day. I haven't had a glass of milk in years and there's research coming out now that indicates that we just don't need it. Just find your calcium in other places, like veggies and seafood.

I take vita fusion gummies and asked my doctor about the iron and calcium part. He said my blood count was very good so no need for an iron supplement at this time, but I do take some chewy calcium supplements since I don't eat a lot of dairy.

I took the Vitafusion gummies which don't have iron. It worked out well because at one point my OB asked if my prenatal had extra iron and said to switch if it did, because I had enough and didn't need a supplement.

Thanks everyone. I think I need a calcium supplement because I feel I don't get enough calcium in my diet. I try to drink milk every day, but it's just not my favourite. One glass is basically all I can get myself to drink. I try to eat cheese often, but I don't think it's enough.

As for the iron, I have no idea if I get enough of it.

But I have lots to consider now, so thank you.

I take the gummy ones specifically because they don't have iron. I don't need extra iron and it makes a lot of women feel nauseous. My doctor was fine without a calcium supplement as long as I was getting 2-3 servings of dairy each day.

I take gummy prenatals too. I haven't had to supplement for iron/calcium - I try to make sure I get enough through my diet, and it's worked so far. VitaFusion has a gummy prenatal supplement for fiber and calcium though, so maybe that would be an option if you know it's going to be an issue?

I just took the One-A-Day Vitacraves with DHA (blue bottle) through TTC, pregnancy, and nursing. They determined I had an iron deficiency at 20 weeks pregnant, but it was no big deal - they said I could take a supplement or change my diet. I took the supplement, but my doctor said changing my diet would have worked. I don't eat red meat so tend to be anemic, so it wasn't a big surprise. I didn't take any extra calcium.

I have been looking into prenatal vitamins because I would like to start taking them at least a few months before we're ready to TTC.

The problem is is that I have such a hard time swallowing big pills.

For those of you who take the gummy prenatal vitamins, do you supplement with calcium and iron as well? I find most (if not all) gummys do not include calcium or iron.

I'm just worried that taking vitamins is going to run too costly, just because I hate swallowing a big pill.

I took them for a while when I was super sick during the first and part of second trimesters and they were the only ones I could (mostly) keep down. Now, I just take a regular multi. I asked my doc if it was really necessary to take double the amounts of regular vitamins in a prenatal, and she said no as long as I'm getting enough folic acid. I eat a ton of bread and cereal, so the folic acid component is under control :) Some people think it isn't necessary to supplement with vitamins at all. I do just to be on the safe side, but I would say the gummies are fine if that's what you can take.
