@peachykeen: yeah - I've been wondering if should just pop them. The internet seems pretty opposed to this, but I just don't see how they're going to get better otherwise. They've stayed the same for 3 days now.

I have no idea if this would work, but maybe try an exfoliating scrub with warm water on the thumb to loosen the blisters and then (once skin is dry) wrap with an Ace bandage or similar? Doesn't sound super pleasant but the momentary discomfort might be worth it.

My almost 2 year old DS has HFM. The rash started on Saturday and looks better almost everywhere except the thumb that he sucks on regularly. Daycare and doctor both said I could bring him back once everything looked dry - which it mostly has since Monday except for his stupid thumb. The blisters there are still wet and filled. Does anyone have any idea how I can help them dry out when my son frequently sucks his thumb?

It's looking worse as each day goes on. :crying: New blisters/spots keep forming and the worst are on her favorite thumb 4 spots with 2 pretty large and blister-like and white. She's so verbal now too - she was crying and telling me her mouth, her feet, her hands, and her eyes hurt. I have no idea about the eyes, but I am calling in the morning to just talk with the ped. Looks like it's not such a mild case after all.

@2littlepumpkins: Oh no! It's just awful when you need to somehow divide the attention for both and need to protect the young one. :crying:

No advice just commiseration. Ds is 3 weeks and caught his first cold (despite isolation and masks and gloves and hand washing) from dd last week and now dd has a stomach bug and a fever somewhere between 101-103. :/

@shopaholic: My nephew had it at 20 months (awful case with blisters on hands, feet, and in his mouth too) but somehow amazingly did not spread it to his 4 month old sister. So it's possible to keep it contained. Good luck and sorry that K is feeling so miserable.

@shopaholic: by the time we identified the spots and thought back to the low grade fever he had the prior weekend, he was pretty much over it. He had a really mild case though and wasn't in his mouth. But yea. Once there are no new spots and no fever you should be past it.

@shopaholic: If she doesn't have any new spots on Sat I would at least let her ToT. But only cause that she wouldn't be around a lot of kids. But if she has any new spots I wouldn't even do that. I know that would stink. But I wouldn't take the risk.

R had a mild case. She has a fever Tues and Wed, took her to the pedi on Thursday, and she said HFM. She only had a couple spots on her hand. Pedi saw more on her throat. So she missed Halloween and then we kept her home all weekend. But she was back at school on Monday.

@Smurfette: Really?! You think she could be well enough by Halloween? I've already cancelled all plans with friends. I don't want to get anyone's kids sick too. But we plan to let her trick-or-treat a few of the neighbors houses at least by herself. :(

@kodybear: Yikes! Ugh, they should make a vaccine for this too! The whining and complaining is driving me batty! I feel awful for her, but every two minutes she wants something, doesn't want it, wants something else. And I haven't been able to get her to eat anything besides frozen yogurt, yogurt smoothies, juice, and gummy candies. Yeah, I feel like mom-of-the-year over here.

@shopaholic: haha aww thats cute about her wanting to play with her brother but yeah hopefully she doesn't pass it to him! i actually think HFM is worse for toddlers than babies bc they're more verbal about the pain and eating is more painful than drinking. anywho i hope ur son doesn't get it! and yeah, our ped said the same thing about HFM. apparently theres one main HFM virus, but theres a couple that are really similar with the sores and the fever that get grouped with HFM. Im actually one of the lucky ones that have had it THREE times. Once as a teen (my baby bro got it first) and then those last two times. they all were a little different in symptoms so probably different virus' but all with those lovely mouth sores :-/

@T.H.O.U.: Ugh! I do n't know exactly how/where, but I'm 99% positive she caught it from the bounce house at the pumpkin patch last weekend. DH let her play in there barefoot, and not as "paranoid" as I am about wiping her hands down with antibacterial wipes after she came out/before she sucks on her thumbs. ughhh gross!

@mauxie: Thanks for sharing. I'm praying the same here and we don't get it (me or baby!)

@kodybear: Thanks. I'm really trying! I hope he won't get it - she is all about touching his head and face and toes and hands. She thinks he's so cute and fun. *sigh* That is crazy about the daycare going back so quickly though! Our ped told us the same thing - no longer contagious a day after the fever breaks. She isn't feverish today at all. But I also read online where they say they can still spread the virus up to 2 weeks. AND our ped told us it's unlikely that a kid would get it more than once, so that's awful for your household having to go through it twice!

I think you're doing everything you can! I've heard its spread through saliva and feces as well. from what i understand, you are contagious before you show any symptoms though. so its likely that your baby was already exposed to it in the days before your daughter got sick. :-/ our daycare allows kids with HFM to come back after the fever is gone but still with sores because everyone's already been exposed to it prior to the fever.

We've had this run through our house twice. The first time it was just me and DD who got it. We both had fevers and mouth sores.

This past time was a bit crazy. DD got it and shared it with the rest of us :-/ I didn't know she had it because she didn't have a fever. Just a couple spots on her face and one mouth sore. But then i caught it and had a couple mouth sores and a fever. Then DS (14mo) caught it. He got a bad body rash and fever but no mouth sores. Then DH caught it and had a fever and mouth sores.

Bleh. So im not sure why the first time only 2 of us caught it and the second time all of us caught it. If you're BFing tho hopefully that will help keep your son healthy!

DD caught HFM disease :crying:. What started out as just a fever and no visible symptoms except sores inside her throat when we were at the doctor's yesterday, has gotten worse. I know there isn't much we can do, and even the ped and literature she gave us made it seems like it's not really worrisome about spreading, like it's too hard to isolate and most kids will just get it once. BUT, we have a 7 week old baby too! I'm terrified that he will catch it. I'm a SAHM and no help around. DS is leaving work early to come home and help, but he can't take that much time off work.

Now DD is extra clingy, crying, inconsolable at times and just wants mom to hold her understandably. She has started forming blisters on her hands and feet now and scratching her feet. I'm so scared the baby will get it! My hands are practically raw from washing in just one day.

Does anyone have some advice and/or experience? Is it really easily transmittable, like her feet and hands touching things and spreading the virus too? If she touches my face with her hands, do I need to wash my face? I have the baby constantly bopping his face on my face too. The ped told me it's only transmitted really through saliva, but I'm not sure. She is also a thumb-sucker, which is really not helping the situation. I feel just miserable and can't imagine a whole week of this... feeling so hopeless.

Yeah, I had it way worse than DS did. The first day with the fever was the worse, then after that he got blisters on days 2 & 3 and then they started going away. I kept getting new blisters for 3-4 days until mine started to dry up and peel. My hands and feet peeled for a couple months and every single one of my nails fell off. It was insane!!

We had two mild cases and three bad ones including me. The mild cases one had one or two blisters that formed and a fever for one day with a sore throat that lasted maybe 2 days. The kids bad cases were probably 4-5 days of spreading rashes with fevers and sore throats, then another week of recovery. I had the most severe case and mine kept spreading and getting worse for over a week. It was at it's worse at around day 4 or 5 and then those blisters started hardening but I still got new small ones for a few more days. It took our family a month to get over it. It was horrible.

@My Only Sunshine: That sound like his case right now. The ones that popped up on his face last night are already gone this morning. Hopefully we're clearing up!

@MoreCoffee: I'm so nervous his classmates are going to get it! I feel so guilty when it's my kid that causes the outbreak, and not only did they have school Friday, but then they all came over to our house Saturday morning for his birthday party. I had no idea it was hand foot mouth until Saturday evening because there was no rash. Most of the moms were cool when I texted them Sunday, but one of them hasn't answered me and I'm afraid she's ticked.

When DS had it they started in his throat and he only had a couple on his mouth - we thought maybe it wasn't HFM and just a virus with low-grade fever. On day 4 he woke up with them all over his face, hands, feet, thighs, and bottom. It was so miserable! Our daycare told us it was the worst outbreak they'd seen in a long time - half his class was out for the whole week! He stopped getting new sores after a week but they took a while to clear up, especially the ones in his diaper area.

I hope your DS feels better soon!

@Smurfette: @Mrs. Pen: Those were pretty mild cases. We were lucky in that his fever was very low and only on Friday night. The spots appeared by Saturday evening and by Sunday it was nasty from the belly down.

@HLK208: Ha, seriously. It's never-ending in this house. Why is my kid always sick?!

@SeptMomma12 @hilsy85: Thanks! I feel like he's looking better this morning...a lot of he blisters seemed to have gone down overnight. By this evening we should know if it's finally going away.

We had a mild case as well...woke up with a fever on Sunday, and I think the blisters had stopped appearing by Wednesday, and he was fine by Friday, just some peeling.

He had a pretty bad case and I'd say there was probably 4 days of blisters forming. I think day 5 or 6 is when I finally felt like we were on the upswing. (Though days 1-3 seemed to be when he felt the sickest, so hopefully you're past that now!) And then they took forever to go away. HFM is seriously the worst - hang in there mama
