Following - we are going to Maui with our almost 2 year old in Feb. We are staying in a condo in Lahaina for half of the week and a house in Paia for the other half. We wanted to stay at the Honda kai but acceptable suites were booked by the time we made the arrangements. Warning that this time of year is very busy so you'll need to move fast on lodging and rental car. For us, having a kitchen and a separate bedroom from our toddler is essential which did make it a bit harder. We have a couple date nights planned and will be using Nanny Connection for a sitter.

I meant Kaanapali not Kapalua but they are right near each other and Kapalua is nice too. There are a lot of nice beaches. I just go by looks because I don't know the names. Baby Beach is nice when the tide washes things clean. We went on a day when it looked a little dirty. The water was so calm though so LO went in anyway. . You can Google that though and just check it out when you get there.

I went to Maui when my kids were 15 mos and just turned 3. We had an awesome trip! We rented a condo that was "walking distance" from the beach but we only did that walk once - about 45 minutes and hilly. Staying right on the beach would have been amazing but didn't work out for our budget and needs. Our kids were both sleep trained and not ready for hotel style lodging by any means. We had a 2 bedroom place, 3yo got the other bedroom and the 1yo got the bathroom attached to the master. Having a place for them to nap and "sleep in" (went to bed around 5pm and woke around 4/5 am) was important to us. Also, a full kitchen was great so we only ate in restaurants a couple of times. The pool at our condo was pretty fun, it wasn't cold and the boys had fun there. We only went to the beach 2-3 times.

Attractions: Aquarium, goat farm, sunrise whale watching tour by the non-profit, hotel pool, taking walks anywhere.

We stayed at Kaanapali just before LO's second birthday, and he had a blast!

I would definitely stay right on the beach if you can. Every morning we walked down to the beach after breakfast and LO played in the sand or the waves. Then we headed back to the hotel pool and LO played in the shallow kiddie pool (he could stand up and walk around). We ate lunch by the pool, then went back to the room for showers and a nap. When he woke up, we would head to town for dinner.

@littlejoy: I think the Hilton Hawaiian Village was ideal. A good mix of walkability and beaches. It would be hard to find a place I personally like more.

I'm the same boat! We're going to Oahu in April with my then 2.5 year old and I'll be 5 months pregnant. We're getting go cards from Costco which is a pass for a bunch of different attractions. I'm not sure if they have them for various islands though. Other than that I'm just hoping for advice!

@youboots and I have traveled to HI together the last two years (in 2015, my LO was about 2 and her LO was about 2 this year).

We've stayed in condos and a resort. Both have perks. There isn't much to say beyond the sand and the pools will keep your LO entertained for hours. We had a rental car, but finding excursions that worked around naps was a little hard. The plane trip was easy both years. I recommend a baby carrier for the trip, but a stroller is a blessing (since it's so warm there). Ask us if you have any questions!!!

Maui aquarium is awesome for kids.
There is a Costco near the airport for stocking condo. I like to stay in Wailea but Kapalua is nice too. Head upcountry to Kula (small lavender farm) and Paia eat at some nice local restaurants there. Lahaina is popular for walking along the waterfront and window shopping. Some historic stuff there. Whatever you do....don't go to Hana unless you have a ton of time to kill. The drive is super duper far and winds like crazy. Think motion sickness. Haleakala is pretty at sunrise but not sure if it is worth it with a toddler in tow.

I took my then 2-year-old when I was about 20 weeks pregnant (in January 2014...) It was awesome! We stayed in a condo on Maui. We had a pool, but spent most of our time at the beach (the pool was FREEZING). We did go to the aquarium one day, but didn't go on a boat (I get sea sick even when I'm not pregnant.) We did go to the pineapple plantation and had fun. Happy to answer questions!

I'd vote for Maui or Oahu with your family dynamic. I think Big Island is great for active folks, and Kauai might be too sleepy. But my personal vote would be for Maui!

The Hyatt on Kauai is very comparable to Aulani I thought. Both are nice and you could never leave if you didn't want to. I like how small Kauai is... The Hyatt is very close to a park/beach area in Poipu. But the Hyatt itself has a pool with full kids amenities and lagoon (very similar to Aulani). Also check out Happy Kids + name of island if you want any babysitting. They work in all of the hotels. We used them when Our lo was 8 months old and we were very satisfied.

If you're planning to stay on Oahu, Aulani is probably your best option especially with the kids. I haven't stayed there myself, but I've had friends with kids that live on Oahu do staycations there and they loved it. Other higher end hotel options in town are The Kahala Hotel & Resort and the Halekulani, but I think those are geared more towards adults.
If you want to go to Maui, there's the Grand Wailea. That hotel is awesome for kids. They have a giant pool with slides and activities. I've stayed there a few times prebaby and had a great time. I can't wait to take my LO there when she gets older.

Hi Ladies,
Looking for some Hawaii help. We are planning on going next June. There will be our family (DH, 5 year old son, & me), my brother's wife and family ( 2 elementary age children) and my mother in law. We are going for the week and want to be together with out stepping on each other. Looking at higher end resorts with lots for the kids to do. Not really interested in a condo where we would all stay together and have to get in the car to go do anything. I could be happy rarely leaving the resort. Right now Disney's Aulani is a top pick. What other suggestions and insight do you have?
Thanks!

@PawPrints: I got an e book flying with baby by Meg Colin's that offers a ton of advice. We are going for 2 weeks to Oahu with an 8 month old this fall. We are going to buy a cheap/lightweight car seat just for travel and check it when we board. I don't think a rental car is a bad idea for Maui, we went for 2 weeks about 3 years ago. Unless you are going to stay close to the beach and your hotel the whole time. But there is a lot to explore.

My sister took my nephew who was 4 months at the time to Kauai on a family trip 2 years ago. I would for sure get a beach pod. Poor guy got so much sand on him if there was any wind. A town with an umbrella did not cut it.

Kihei is pretty far from the airport... Look at taxi rates vs. rental car, because it might be close. With a car you can drive to the store and buy diapers, food, etc, as well as go explore towns like Lahaina. We always get a car on Maui. My uncle used to live there but we still go at least every other year. Haven't been with a baby yet, but it's in the plans for next summer. Have fun!

We went to Hawaii right before DS turned 1. We were on Oahu and the Big Island and rented cars the whole time. We baggage checked our car seat and gate checked our Maclaren, although, we probably could have done without the stroller. We also brought the Ergo. We stayed in a hotel on Oahu and used VRBO on the Big Island. Both provided PNPs.

I think a Pea Pod is a good idea! She won't be able to sit, so she'll have to lay somewhere, and PeaPods offer sun protection. I would also get a big parasol. We are all very fair skinned, so we are always under a parasol at the beach in any case. Sunscreen isn't recommended under 6 months, so I would also look into getting a rash guard or a rash guard suit, plus hat and sunglasses.

We are about to book a trip to Maui for late July, probably an Air BnB in Kihei area. I'm looking at 1-BR places where a crib will be available, though we'll probably have to rent one. The goal is a relaxing vacation where we can lie on the beach and roll with LO's schedule, drinking pina coladas when we're not changing diapers, and see some great sunsets.

What is a good approach for hanging out with LO on the beach? She will be almost 4 months old. I plan to carry her in a Moby or mei tai to/from the condo but not sure what to put her in on the beach. We own a Pea Pod but I think those are for older babies. Any advice?

I'd love any other random advice as well, whether about checking car seats/strollers, renting cars versus trying to book a taxi with a car seat (Kihei seems pretty walkable so I'm tempted to see if we can get away with not renting a car, but that would involve figuring out a way to get to/from airport with LO properly secured), whether to bring a PnP or what, etc. Thanks.
