Hey Guys! Sorry for posting this a week late. It's been a busy week here! I figured an extra week wouldn't hurt for those who are reading along but not quite caught up yet.

I returned my book a few weeks ago, so I'm going off memory here...forgive me if I get some of the details wrong!

Ok, so Part 4 is when Nelson finally returns to the capital. We learn that Mrs. Anabel (Rogelio's mother) died from the fall that came from the shock of Nelson leaving. Since Jaime has his documents and knows his home address, he is too afraid to go back there, and instead opts to stay with Patalarga in his run-down theater. While visiting with Henry, he confides that he has the sense of being followed--a station wagon has been following him around for a few days now. Henry, scared for Nelson, decides to take him to visit Ixta at her new job, rather than letting him walk. Sure enough, on the drive there, Henry notices they are being followed by that same station wagon. Ixta, now noticeably pregnant (with Mindo's child), spends some time with him, but ultimately tells him that she can't be with him.

Mindo finds out about this visit from Ixta's boss, and gets drunk and goes and finds Nelson at the theater. After banging on the door for a while, Nelson agrees to go out on a walk with him and talk. Things are relatively normal until they get to a bar, a fight breaks out, they're kicked out, the fight resolves itself, and they continue walking into a dark alley. According to Nelson, in that alley several men jump out of the station wagon and begin attacking the two men. Nelson manages to escape, and spends the rest of the night wandering around the city. In the morning, he walks to Ixta's apartment, and walks right into the police--Mindo had been stabbed to death the night before. Since Nelson was the last to be seen with Mindo, and has motive to kill him, he is arrested.

In Part 5 we learn more about our narrator--he is an intrepid young journalist who stumbled upon the story based on his time in T____. He follows Nelson through his trial, conviction, and his getting sent to Collectors (the very same prison that Henry was in, and where Rogelio died). He becomes friendly with Nelson's family and friends, and is thoroughly convinced of Nelson's innocence. In the last scene, he is visiting Nelson for the first time in Collectors. While there, he is suddenly not as sure of Nelson's innocence........
=============

So, mainly I just want to know what did everyone think of the book? Of the ending? What about Nelson's latest acting "role"? Finally, do you think that Nelson did it???

I have to run this morning, and I'll post my thoughts later today or tomorrow.

Thanks for having me as host, it was fun! Now who's doing the next one??

1. I would have been really uncomfortable in this situation. Jaime is really scary and I would not have let him take my documents. The longer the charade went on, the more uncomfortable, and frankly, scared, I would be.

2. I am totally non-confrontational, so I probably would have done the same. Said I was going to the store, or for a walk, and just leave on the next bus. I would have done exactly as Nelson in this situation.

3. I've actually already finished the book, so I'm not going to answer this one :)

Hey guys, sorry for posting thins late! It completely slipped my mind until now :)

Part 3 tells the story of when Nelson was in T____ playing the role of Rogelio for Anabel, Rogelio's senile mother who doesn't know of his death. Jaime, Rogelio's brother, offers Nelson a large amount of money to stay for a week. He accepts, but becomes increasingly uncomfortable when he Jaime takes his documents and is vague about when he will return. Nelson also realizes that Jaime is much more of a tough guy than he initially realized. After a month, Nelson is fed up, packs his bags and decides to leave, documents or not. Mrs. Anabel sees him, and in her shock stumbles and falls. At this point Nelson goes for help, and this is the first time he meets The Narrator. They go to get some medicine in the town square, but upon seeing the bus departing, Nelson decides to hop on and return to his regular life in the Capital.

1. How comfortable would you have been in the situation, especially given Jaime's sketch-factor?

2. Would you have left in the same way as Nelson?

3. How do you think this situation will resolve itself?

Alright, I hope you enjoyed and I'll be back on Monday to post about Parts 4 & 5!

@autumnlove: I'm nearly done with it and it's really good! Definitely put it on your list!

Ok, sorry it took me so long to get back to this...here are my answers.

1. I think Nelson is one of those easy-going guys, who one day just has enough and SNAPS. I think that Jaime probably has a lot to do with it...it seems like Nelson is being punished (by Jaime) for something he had no part of. It's like, Jaime would really love to have punished Henry, but since he wasn't available Nelson is the next best thing. I have a feeling Jaime is going to do something horrible, Nelson will just sit there and take it, and then snap on the next person he has a significant interaction with.

2. I'm way too naive about these things and tend to always tell the truth (even if it's not in my best interest). I think that Henry did the best he could to try to protect the memory of Rogelio, the love of his life, with his family (especially his mother) who obviously adore him.

3. On the one hand, I would have been too scared of Jaime to accept! On the other hand, I would have too scared of Jaime to not accept!!! Basically I think Jaime is a scary dude, and Nelson was probably screwed either way.

Hello! I hope that you've been able to read along even if you haven't had time to participate in the discussion. I'd love to hear your thoughts, though, if you have the time!

Part 2 of At Night We Walk in Circles takes place entirely in the village we only know of T____. This happens to be Rogelio's hometown, as well as the town that the narrator's parents hail from. After spontaneously changing the itinerary of the trip, the trio arrives and settles in. Henry decides to pay a visit to Rogelio's mom and sister. Tension arises when Henry talks about Rogelio's death in front of his senile mother and his sister who didn't know he was dead. After giving the best performance of the tour, Rogelio's brother Jaime arrives, and offers Nelson a role he can't refuse.

1. There was a bunch of foreshadowing in this section about what Nelson does later. He jokes about being a killer (in the play), the narrator talks about how Mindo (Ixta's boyfriend) didn't deserve what happened to him, etc. What do you think Nelson is capable of?

2. How would you have handled the situation Henry found himself in? How would you explain your relationship to Rogelio?

3. Would you have accepted Jaime's offer like Nelson did?

I'll post my answers later today, I'm in a bit of a rush this morning.

As a reminder, the rest of the reading schedule is as follows:
April 21: Part 3 (ch 16-19)
April 28: Parts 4 & 5 (ch 20-24)

1. I don't think that Nelson will react well. He's very used to the life he has in the capital city. I think he will eventually wind up disappointed....he's studied so many years to be an actor, and he finally has a great opportunity to tour with a theater troupe and playwright he's long admired. That just seems like a recipe for disappointment. He's going to find out things about his fellow actors, his girlfriend, his family, and even himself that will change the way he feels. I think, that for some, being out of their element changes them for the best, but I don't think Nelson is one of those. I'm interested to see how he will react in increasingly-tense situations in later parts of the book.

2. I think the actors in Diciembre all well-suited to their roles. I think Henry gets a sick satisfaction about being the one in control, and acting out in really cruel ways to both his son and servant--for example, in rehearsal when he tells Nelson "remember, when I'm kicking him I'm really kicking you." I think Nelson seems like he's a little out of his element, much as Alejo is as the son of the president. I think that this will ultimately lead to some kind of explosion. I think Patalarga does well in his role as the servant. He appears to be the one with the fewest demons, and is just along for the fun. I think that as the book continues, we will see how each player adopts more aspects of their role.

3. I think this loss of innocence, so to speak, is really what will cause this downfall we know is coming. I think that Nelson is really beginning to question his role in the troupe, in the play, and in his own life. The heartbreak that comes from his phone call with Ixta may lead him to act out in a difficult way.

4. I'm really curious about the narrator!! He seems to be some sort of journalist, piecing together the story after the "event" has happened. It doesn't seem like his interviews are too far removed from it, so I have a feeling he (or she!) was involved in some way, if only on the periphery.

Hi folks!

I hope that you've been able to read along, and enjoyed Part 1 of At Night We Walk in Circles as much as I did! It's been hard not to read ahead *too* far.

Just to recap: In Part 1 we meet Nelson, a young actor, who has recently joined the theater troupe Diciembre for a touring revival of a play called The Idiot President. The tour is meant to recreate a tour Diciembre made many years ago in the midst of a brutal civil war. This will take them far from the coastal capital city, into the highlands. Alongside Nelson are two of Diciembre's original members--Henry, who is the playwright, and Patalarga, an actor, and now owner of a seedy theater in the Capital. We also learn that Henry was imprisoned for several months in a brutal prison called Collectors, due to the subversive nature of his writings during the civil war. We learn that while he was there, he became lovers with his cellmate, Rogelio, who was killed in a prison riot after Henry was released. We also meet Ixta, Nelson's ex-girlfriend, Monica, his mother, and hear stories about Sebastien, his late father, and Francisco, his brother who has moved to the United States. At the end of Part 1, we find Diciembre well into its tour, about to change course and head to Rogelio's home town.

I marked a few pages that struck me while reading this section, so I thought I'd throw them out there for discussion.

1. At the end of chapter 3, Nelson and the rest of Diciembre board a night bus to begin the tour. Upon his offhand remark that the city was lovely at night, the narrator writes "There could be no place in the world to which [Nelson] belonged so completely. That was why he'd always dreamed of leaving, and why he'd always been so afraid to go." To me, at least, this was one of the first hints that something bad might happen. How do you think Nelson will react to being away from the only city he knows for an extended period of time?

2. How do you think that their roles in the play mix with their personalities? Henry, you'll remember, is the titular Idiot President, a violent, arrogant, stupid man. Nelson plays his son, who hates him (or does he....??), and Patalarga, the servant, who is more intelligent than he seems. Do you think we'll see the actors further adapt to their roles? Will those roles begin to manifest themselves in their lives outside the troupe?

3. During the tour, Henry wants the actors to remain in "the play's constructed universe," and prohibits phone calls and letters to those at home. In chapter 9, we learn that Nelson is the only one following the rules. Patalarga has been calling his wife, and Henry his daughter. Do you think this loss of innocence is what leads him to his downfall, or "what happens" that the narrator is always alluding to?

4. Finally, I'd like to hear your thoughts of the narrator. Why, do you think, is he so obsessed with this story??

I'll post my answers below.

As a reminder, here is the schedule for the rest of the month:

April 14: Part 2 (ch 11-15)
April 21: Part 3 (ch 16-19)

I got a copy at my library, and the book is conveniently divided into 5 sections, so I'm thinking of the following schedule:

April 7: Part One (ch 1-10, pg 1-142*)
April 14: Part Two (ch 11-15, pg 145-225)
April 21: Part Three (ch 16-19, pg 229-280)
April 28: Parts Four & Five (ch 20-24, pg 283-372)

*hardcover edition

I realize the first discussion is a little ambitious, but there is also a little more time to get it done. I also began reading, and it goes pretty quickly.

I hope you'll join me! Happy reading!

@winniebee: Yay! If you haven't yet, vote for the book you'd like to read for book club. At the end of this week, the winner of the poll will be the book we'll discuss in April. It's up to you to find a copy of the book, whether through the library, or purchased, or downloaded to an e-reader.

I'll post a reading schedule next week. It will depend on the book, but probably 4-5 chapters a week. Starting the 2nd week of April, I'll post some discussion questions, and when you find time feel free to post your thoughts! I'll continue doing it until the book is done

Alright, Bees, it's time to pick April's books! I've taken a few months off from the Book Club, so I'm excited to get back into it by leading the discussion! I don't have a theme, really, except for they are all written by Latin American authors. I'm excited about all these books, and I'm sure I'll read them all at some point. Here are the books, as well their descriptions from Amazon. I know I've seen all of them at the small library where I work, so they are hopefully available at yours, too! All page lengths refer to the hardcover edition.

The Sound of Things Falling by Juan Gabriel Vasquez, 288 pages

* National Bestseller
* Hailed by Edmund White as "a brilliant new novel" on the cover of the New York Times Book Review
* One of NPR’s 6 Best Books of the Summer
* Esquire recommends The Sound of Things Falling “if you read only one book this month”
* Starred early reviews from Publishers Weekly, Booklist, Library Journal, and Kirkus
* Lauded by Jonathan Franzen, E. L. Doctorow and many others

From a global literary star comes a prize-winning tour de force – an intimate portrayal of the drug wars in Colombia.

Juan Gabriel Vásquez has been hailed not only as one of South America’s greatest literary stars, but also as one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation. In this gorgeously wrought, award-winning novel, Vásquez confronts the history of his home country, Colombia.

In the city of Bogotá, Antonio Yammara reads an article about a hippo that had escaped from a derelict zoo once owned by legendary Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. The article transports Antonio back to when the war between Escobar’s Medellín cartel and government forces played out violently in Colombia’s streets and in the skies above. Back then, Antonio witnessed a friend’s murder, an event that haunts him still. As he investigates, he discovers the many ways in which his own life and his friend’s family have been shaped by his country’s recent violent past. His journey leads him all the way back to the 1960s and a world on the brink of change: a time before narco-trafficking trapped a whole generation in a living nightmare.

Vásquez is “one of the most original new voices of Latin American literature,” according to Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa, and The Sound of Things Falling is his most personal, most contemporary novel to date, a masterpiece that takes his writing—and will take his literary star—even higher.

At Night We Walk in Circles by Daniel Alarcon, 384 pages

*NPR “Best Books of 2013”
*BookPage Best Books of 2013
*Bookriot “Best Books of 2013”
*San Francisco Chronicle Favorite Books of 2013: Francisco Goldman
*Flavorwire 15 Favorite Novels of 2013

The breakout book from a prizewinning young writer: a breathtaking, suspenseful story of one man’s obsessive search to find the truth of another man’s downfall.

Nelson’s life is not turning out the way he hoped. His girlfriend is sleeping with another man, his brother has left their South American country, leaving Nelson to care for their widowed mother, and his acting career can’t seem to get off the ground. That is, until he lands a starring role in a touring revival of The Idiot President, a legendary play by Nelson’s hero, Henry Nunez, leader of the storied guerrilla theater troupe Diciembre. And that’s when the real trouble begins.

The tour takes Nelson out of the shelter of the city and across a landscape he’s never seen, which still bears the scars of the civil war. With each performance, Nelson grows closer to his fellow actors, becoming hopelessly entangled in their complicated lives, until, during one memorable performance, a long-buried betrayal surfaces to force the troupe into chaos.

Nelson’s fate is slowly revealed through the investigation of the narrator, a young man obsessed with Nelson’s story—and perhaps closer to it than he lets on. In sharp, vivid, and beautiful prose, Alarcón delivers a compulsively readable narrative and a provocative meditation on fate, identity, and the large consequences that can result from even our smallest choices.

The Barbarian Nurseries by Hector Tobar, 432 pages

*New York Times Notable Book for 2011
*Boston Globe Best Fiction Book of 2011

The great panoramic social novel that Los Angeles deserves—a twenty-first century, West Coast Bonfire of the Vanities by the only writer qualified to capture the city in all its glory and complexity

With The Barbarian Nurseries, Héctor Tobar gives our most misunderstood metropolis its great contemporary novel, taking us beyond the glimmer of Hollywood and deeper than camera-ready crime stories to reveal Southern California life as it really is, across its vast, sunshiny sprawl of classes, languages, dreams, and ambitions.

Araceli is the live-in maid in the Torres-Thompson household—one of three Mexican employees in a Spanish-style house with lovely views of the Pacific. She has been responsible strictly for the cooking and cleaning, but the recession has hit, and suddenly Araceli is the last Mexican standing—unless you count Scott Torres, though you’d never suspect he was half Mexican but for his last name and an old family photo with central L.A. in the background. The financial pressure is causing the kind of fights that even Araceli knows the children shouldn’t hear, and then one morning, after a particularly dramatic fight, Araceli wakes to an empty house—except for the two Torres-Thompson boys, little aliens she’s never had to interact with before. Their parents are unreachable, and the only family member she knows of is Señor Torres, the subject of that old family photo. So she does the only thing she can think of and heads to the bus stop to seek out their grandfather. It will be an adventure, she tells the boys. If she only knew . . .

With a precise eye for the telling detail and an unerring way with character, soaring brilliantly and seamlessly among a panorama of viewpoints, Tobar calls on all of his experience—as a novelist, a father, a journalist, a son of Guatemalan immigrants, and a native Angeleno—to deliver a novel as broad, as essential, as alive as the city itself.
