@helloperidot: DD3 failed the hospital screening and the first re-test at her pediatrician. We were referred to an audiologist, and she technically passed, but barely/with not great results, in one ear in particular. She was retested at her one year appointment and passed. Along the way, the doctors reassured me that it was probably a combination of her size and her (uncooperative) personality, haha. FWIW, she was early and super small (IUGR), and had a number of ear infections in her first year, but not enough to require tubes. She's three now, hears just fine, and does not get regular ear infections. :)

@LemonJack: We have our retest on Thursday. The analyst said that it's about 1 in 10 who fail the initial screen, and 1 in 50 who fail the next screening...she said she refers probably 1 in 1,000 to audiology. It's still nerve wracking, even though I keep telling myself things will be just fine.

We just went through this with our DS in November. He failed 2x in the hospital. He had a follow up screening at 6 weeks and easily passed. I was super nervous about it too, but none of the nurses or our doctor seemed at all concerned. They said a lot of babies fail initially and are just fine! Did they tell you when they’ll test again?

@bhbee: @Shantuck: @jhd: @muffinsmuffins: thank you all so much! This is precisely what I needed. The analyst kept breaking it down by numbers, trying to reassure me that it is super common and there's multiple layers of screening referrals before we would even be sent to audiology...but you know how anxiety is. I just heard "we need you to come back and test a different way" and my mind went crazy. 😳😭😳

My older son failed his screens a few times before we left the hospital. He was a preemie and had/has very small ear canals. They tried one last time before he would have to be referred on and he passed it. We were reassured it was normal as well.

We had the same experience as @bhbee where my son failed his first test at the hospital but passed when retested. Newborns can have fluid in their ears for awhile after birth.

I’m not sure it was the same process but one of mine failed the initial screen in the hospital but passed when it was repeated, not sure exactly what age though. I’m under the impression that the screens are not entirely accurate and that’s why they do further testing but I’m no expert. I hope you can find some peace while you wait, I know it’s hard not to worry!

Hey everyone, I'm having a bit of anxiety and am looking for some reassurance, if possible.

DD3 is 3w and had her initial hearing screen yesterday. She passed on her left ear, but failed on her right and has been referred for another round of testing. I'm struggling already with the beginnings of PPA and this is putting me through the roof. The analyst tried to reassure me that this is completely normal and lots of babies still have fluid in their ears, even at 3w.

Has anyone gone through this process? Did your babe have some level.of hearing loss, or was it just a screening anomaly?
