Ha! I wish!

Both of my kids are short - its genetics!

I think my DD will be fine being short but I do worry about my DS - I feel like the smaller boys get teased

@irene: growing up, my sister was always the shortest in her class (we know this because they always like to line kids up by height)… she was a shorty all the way up until 7th grade, then between 8-9th grade she had a major growth spurt and is 2 inches taller than me now! she's 5'7", which is considered tall for an Asian girl.

i also remember all the shortest boys in my classes growing up ended up being some of the tallest ones!

@irene: Ah! Sucks about your FIL's complaints. Grrr. FWIW, I was always such a shorty until about H.S. I had one tiny growth spurt Sophomore year. I also grew up with a super short and chubby boy from elementary school - h.s. Well, I saw him AFTER H.S. and he had a sudden, major growth spurt! Like 6" and thinned out like a bean pole! That made me always believe in the possibility of late bloomers!

I'm a short girl and as a kid I always wondered if there were something I could eat to help with my height!

I remember reading somewhere that iron supplements or cod oil might help with growth? I don't know how true it is...

I think in my case, I was doomed by genetics. My parents are 5'0 and 5'4 and I'm 5'0! My hubs thinks that making sure the kids get enough protein is key only because my youngest brother is 5'6 and he ate a ton of protein as a kid.

@irene: Yeah, he was a short guy, and I guess his parents want to boost his self esteem, so they took him to the doctor and got him a growth hormone. I think he actually also had a natural growth spurt on top of that so who knows if that was even necessary. The irony is that once people found out he did that, they made more fun of him.

I don't think there is a whole lot you can do to fight genetics, short of the growth hormone (there was a kid in my high school who got this and he was totally ridiculed for doing it). I'm sure you are feeding him well enough for him to reach his max potential. Plus, I think being tall is overrated. Really!

DS is measuring short for his age also, but he's still young (4.5months). He was also born small (4lbs 13oz). His pedi said 2+ years old is a better benchmark for height. I sure hope he takes after his dad and is tall!! So I can totally commiserate with you on this concern!!

My cousin was short and didn't hit his growth spurt until late middle/early HS!!

Grrrr I want to strangle him some times, for real.

My father was always concerned about my brother being short. He had him take some Chinese growth pills as a kid. I cringe to think what was in them! It didn't help, he got my mom's genes  He isn't exactly short, just not as tall.

@irene: lol! I don't think there is something out there , it's all up to genetics. But remember, kids all grow at their own rate. Some kids stay shrimpy until they hit puberty and then WATCH OUT, while other kids grow like weeds from a very early age.

This is a lame question, I hate myself for asking it, but are there any foods that will help a child grow taller?

LO is a healthy, happy boy. He is 22 months. He loves eating too when he is hungry. However, he seems to be shorter than a lot of same age kids. Our neighbor is 4 months older, and he is shorter than him by almost a head...!

As for us, we are not SUPER short. Husband is 5'9" and I am 5'4".

I know that this depends on genetics and all. I even got into a fight with FIL because of that (he was whining how LO wasn't as chubby as he was when he was a baby, hinting that it was my fault for not feeding him properly). However I do wonder if I could do better in the food (or any other) department. I offer a lot of pasta with parmesan cheese, baked chicken, steamed broccoli / carrots, string beans at times (which he doesn't really eat, maybe a few bites), yobaby yogurt. Recently I puree spinach and mix it into pasta and it has some success. Sometimes we also make baked salmon, and sometimes a meatloaf. For carbs, other than pasta, I offer rice or cheese sandwiches. For the fruit department, he likes bananas, blue berries, in the summer we offer a lot of water melon and other melons, which he gobbles all up. Apples he eats occasionally, so is avocado. We eat out usually during the weekend and he eats a variety of things other than the typical ones I offer at home.

So... any Nutritionist bees out there? Are there any food that can help a child grow taller? Or is that such a thing? Any other things I could do to help him grow taller?

I know it's silly but when my boy went from 80th percentile to 60th I started getting worried he would be 5'8" like my dad instead of 6'1" like my husband. I know height can be a thing for men and being shorter than his dad might be hard but I also know that my son is perfect no matter what his height is. Try to do as I am and focus on making him feel so good about himself that he will feel 10 feet tall no matter how little or big he is.

@runsyellowlites: Hahahaha, it's probably because my family is Asian and therefore more hypercritical? DH's family would never say stuff like that! Plus, my family would probably be okay with a girl that was short, but not a boy!

My LO was on the shorter side at 12 months (28-29") and he fit into Carter's 12 month clothing and 6-12 month clothing at The Gap and Old Navy. We always got comments on how short he was. In the last couple of months though he had a growth spurt and shot up 2-3" and now people comment on how he's tall!

Typically he is fitting in the 12-18m level right now. Clothes aren't the best way to do this. Just tell them the doctor says that she is right on track.

I really think its fine! My LO is in the 96th % for height and still fts some of her Carter's 9 month stuff, just not the tighter bottoms. She's also in the 63rd % for weight. We get stopped and told "she's tall!" so I don't think you can base it off of that! :) I wouldn't worry unless it was a lower weight, especially since you said you're short.

Nope, dont' worry about it! LO is in 4% for height. There is nothing you can do to change it. LO is 14 months and still in some 12m stuff. She actually has a pair of 6-9m pants on the other day and they were fine.

@cranberryapple: if your pediatrician isn't worried, I wouldn't be! some kids are just shorter than others.
I breastfed and DS was always in the very low percentiles for weight - though he was a little above average for height - and I got all sorts of comments about how skinny he was. I even doubted myself and supplemented. I thought it was my fault. Both DH and I are pretty thin and as soon as DS started to eat things like pasta and pizza and cheese he remained a thinner boy. It was pretty obvious it was just his genes at that point.

ETA He's 19 months this week and still wears 12-18 months.

My LO always moves into the Carter's clothes about a month behind. So she just moved in to the 9 month (6-9m) clothing at 7 months. And she's 50th percentile for height and perfectly healthy. I wouldn't worry a bit.
