Our house is built into a hill, so the patio is a level below the deck. In your case, I think it would be better to have a deck since you have a raised ranch. Do you want to have to walk down a flight of stairs to eat in your patio? If it's right off the kitchen and a decent amount of stairs, I'd keep a deck so the grill is close. If it's either further from the kitchen or still close to the kitchen and only a couple of steps patio wins out. Patios also seem better for fire pits and upkeep is easier. We currently live in a raised ranch on a small village lot in an area where lots of people live on acreage and like elbow room. We’re planning to sell sometime in the next two years and need to replace our current deck.
