I have one that I received as a gift. It's amazing how much better everything looks when it's cut with a cricut. I have used it to make some cards and also tried to cut some fabric letters to make a pillow for DD. it was a fail on fabric although theoretically its supposed to work. I haven't bought any extra cartridges yet since I don't use it much...

I am setting up some playschool activities at home for my toddler, and our materials would look much better if it wasn't my crappy handwriting on everything. I saw an activity that used letters printed with a Cricut. Does anyone have one? I'm afraid if I got one I'd get addicted and get sucked in buying all the extras.

For our situation it doesn't really make sense to home school. I get it for people like Pioneer Woman who live far away from a traditional school setting and needing help on the ranch.

Considering I have absolutely no experience in educating children and was an only child so I have no idea how much socialization a kid would need, I'll rely on the school system to educate and socialize him and act as a supplemental provider in those areas.

No. I believe children need to learn socially and grow by interacting with other children. But as other PPs have said, if I needed to teach my children at home for whatever reason, I would be able to (future teacher here).

We were not homeschooled and there is no way I could be a teacher, to my kids or other people's kids. It's just not in me. I have very high praise for most teachers because they do a LOT and hardly ever get a pat on the back for the hard work they put in. I'll send my kids to one of those teachers in a school somewhere. :)

I'm certified to teach K-12, so I think if a situation called for me to pull my kids out of public school, I'd be comfortable teaching them for awhile, but I believe public education is important. We hope to put our kids in French Immersion so they have a chance to become bilingual, and have a better chance at jobs.

DS went to private school for kinder & 1st grade and we've just started home-schooling him.

I found a curriculum that I LOVE and it encourages the character growth that is important to us. We have friends that have used this particular curriculum and their daughters who've just started the high school curriculum are awesome! (they have 6 kids.. another on the way)

I did alot of research and found only positive things on home-schooling. Everything from being able to filter what's coming in... being able to fully explain concepts that often get misunderstood in a classroom with multiple kids setting, and b/c of the one on one time many of those who were home-schooled scored much better on educational tests & are more involved in culture and community as adults.

I'm still very new at it, and am needing to find my own niche but I'm really happy with our choice.

I think about this constantly. As a teacher in the public school system I've seen a lot of things that I'd like to shield by kids from. I routinely see average, run of the mill kids who get pushed to the side because they aren't super brainiacs or trouble makers requiring attention. I also think there is so much time wasted in the public school setting with things like lining up, taking restroom breaks, waiting for others to finish their work, etc. It's just not efficient. It would also work a lot better with my husband's job. However, there are a lot of positives I've seen in the public school setting too. I like that they are taught that sometimes you have to work on other people's schedules, do what you don't want to, work with other people, etc. It also exposes them to more people who are "different" from them which I think is good. I also worry about the stigma that is attached to homeschooling. I'm not worried about the socialization but I worry that others will perceive it as an issue. I don't really care if my kids are great at interacting with other 9 year olds. I care more about their ability to interact with children of all ages and have an intelligent conversation with an adult. In the end, I'm not sure what we'll do yet. it depends a lot on where we live. If we have a lot of land and room for them to learn we'll very, very seriously consider it.

I wouldn't. I think kids really benefit socially from going to school. To be honest, I know there are well-adjusted homeschooled kids, but I haven't met any of them. The public school system is not perfect, but I don't think homeschooling is the solution for most kids. Not to mention that I feel like it would be overwhelming to spend every waking second with your children like that! School is good break for parents and kids :)

I'm actually not sure about this one. I'm a huge proponent of public schools (I went to public schools and was pretty happy with my education), but I think that as the world changes, having to sit in a classroom with 30 other kids and 1 teacher may not be the best way to prepare for it. My husband and I have talked about this a lot, and we'll probably keep talking about it until we have kids at that point. (And I'd like to point out that this is a pretty big shift for me - I never thought I'd want to homeschool my kids as I do believe strongly in the public school system.)

If I had the time and could give up my day job to home-school, I would highly consider it. While DH and I were able to both go to "blue-ribbon" public schools; we are not sure that the public school system is at its best right now. A friend from HS actually is looking into setting up something related to this and maybe in the future she'll be able to home-school our children!

I really love and support public education, but we don't exactly live in the best school district. Well, some elementary schools are decent, middle schools are terrible, and there is one really good high school that everyone tries to test into. Private schools are an option, but they're so expensive here! I think that if we're still living here when our kids reach school age I'll homeschool. However, I doubt we'll choose to continue past 5th or 6th grade... by that point we probably won't be living in this area anymore anyway.

We don't have kids yet, but we both agree on our answer. No, for a variety of reasons. We went to college with many many students who had been homeschooled and too many of them lacked appropriate social skills, and for lack of a better term street smarts/ or life skills. I think of course many homeschooled kids totally had those things, but I think so many didn't that it just put a bitter (and I hate to say it but a little judgmental) taste in my mouth. I just have no desire to do that, out of fear of if I was sheltering my children too much. However I do understand that a successful education comes from the home too, in both what I teach my children and how I support them! I also do respect people who homeschool, because I know that its hard, and I especially respect people who do it the best way, and keep their children active in other things so that they are balanced, they receive socialization, school, and extra curricular activities.

No, but I do think that schooling and education go far, far beyond the classroom. I hope to stay as involved as possible in our children's educations and instill in them a strong work ethic and a love of learning.

I think, especially in my area of California which is predominantly low income Hispanic, there's a huge divide between the kids with parental involvement and those without. Those without tend to be much farther behind and I think they also tend to slow the rest of the class down which can lead to boredom and laziness in the brighter students.

I was fortunate to have both a mother who cared enough to invest time in my education outside of school and teachers who pushed me just a little harder than the other kids. I really hope that my children's teachers do they same for our kids, if they need it.

Heck no. I am a credentialed elementary teacher in California (not working, though-- no jobs) and I have faith in our school system for our district. Also, I know that home/parental support means a LOT to a child's academic success, so the hubs and I will definitely be providing that.

I would love to homeschool, but I don't think I am qualified or knowledgeable in teaching enough to sufficiently provide the proper education for my child. Of course there is the social interaction that he might be missing out on, and I feel better knowing that he can get that stimulation from a school setting.

Both my husband and I were educated in the public school system, and we don't have any regrets. I do want to challenge my son in ways beyond what is provided in school, and I will try my best to extend his education into the weekends and during the summer months.

Are there any homeschool groups or programs in your area? I realize that social development is an important issue and often a concern, but it seems as though people these days have plenty of ways to insure growth in that area without attending a typical classroom.
