My insurance bills labor and delivery of a "well baby" under the mother's insurance plan. If it's a "sick baby" then the baby would have their own deductible.

All of DS's bills were billed under his name but our insurance has a family deductible (no individual deductibles) so it really didn't matter how it was billed from our perspective.

With my second, I remember ours was separately billed. We had a federal BCBS and paid zero for a c-section delivery. When I had UHC with my first, I believe it was separately billed as well, but we had a high deductible plan then and had to pay about $3000 after all was said and done with a c-section delivery.

@TravelBee: we also have Anthem BCBS and, if I recall correctly, my plan covered the first days of hospital costs for a newborn (hospital stay, check ups, etc) and went towards my deductible not his because he wasn't on the insurance until after he was born.

Thanks for the help/insight, everyone!

@jetsa: Yeah, this is very true. It makes more sense to me that LO would be billed separately once born.

@MamaG: This is exactly what the sales agents at Blue Shield and Anthem are telling me but I've read posts online where it ends up not being the case. I'm going to try to get a case number or something in writing too.

@TravelBee: I was just thinking about this some more, it doesn't matter when LO is born bc insurance coverage will backdate up to 30 days after birth so baby will have their own insurance from birth on.

My understanding in working for a health system is that once a baby is born, his charges are his own. You have 30 days to add your baby to your policy once born. Then each child has their own deductible and you have a family deductible. Usually, unless your baby goes to the NICU the baby has few charges compared to the mom.

Everything was billed to me since my LO wasn't added to my insurance until a few weeks after he was born. I thought it was like that for everyone.

It is plan dependent. Also, typically (from what I understand) all charges are billed under the mother unless the stay of the child exceeds that of the mother. In which case than almost without question the child becomes their own deductible.

I have UHC and received a different answer each time I called to question this. Finally I got to a supervisor and got a "case number" to go with my answer in the event that it's not handled as expected.

All the hospital bills were for me, not for DS. I added him to the insurance a week or two after he was born, so I think his first pedi visit was billed for me also... but I'm not 100% sure about that.

So in my plan each person has a deductible and then you have a family deductible. Once the family deductible is hit, everyone is billed as if they have met the deductible. But it can't all just come from one person meeting it.

For me, the pregnancy and delivery related stuff was mine but E was in the NiCU for a week and had her own $250 deductible (thank goodness, her bill was 30K!) I also had a $250 delivery deductible then a anesthesiologist fee.

@TravelBee: after delivery both DS and I got bills. He has never been on my insurance (I'm double covered) so they actually billed him wrong first and had to change it. We got a separate bill for him which included pedetrican check, circumscion, and a small amount of time in the nursery. His bill was nothing compared to mine (considered high risk due to induction but no pain meds)

@TravelBee: yup. I was slow with DS1 and they sent me an ID card for "Baby Boy [lastname]" before I sent them the correct paperwork with his actual name. They wait until the actual birth so they have the correct birth day, social security number, etc.

I think they're telling you the wrong information - as soon as baby is born, they are an individual who can accrue bills. My 2nd DS was in the NICU for 2 months, and of course that was all under his deductible since it was his own health care. Maybe they are referring to most of the hospital bills going to you, since -you- are the one likely to need the most procedures, etc?

@TravelBee: we have UPMC and didn't have any bills for either child. Any bills we had were for me -- for my oldest, it was for my csection, anesthesia and hospital stay. For my second, we didn't have any bills; she was covered 100%, including my prenatal care, delivery and hospital stay.

@Mrs. Tiger: @MrsH: Thanks for the responses! Did you add LO to your insurance before they were born? I know that there is a 30 day period after baby is born to add them to insurance so I'm wondering if when you add LO has something to do with what I'm being told.

My initial thought was that LO would be separate but upon calling Anthem and Blue Shield I've been told that baby's hospital bills would be under my deductible. Granted a Blue Shield representative also told me that we would be separate. It probably doesn't help that I can only get through to sales agents and not to the billing department.

I'm new to HB and double clicked as I was going to read responses and managed to delete my thread prior to reading any of the responses. Rookie mistake! :( Sorry if this is redundant!

Anyways to re-ask my question: DH and I are trying to figure out if when delivering a LO, do mom and baby's bills both go towards mom's deductible? Or do mom's bills go to mom's deductible and baby's go to a separate deductible?

Health insurance is no fun and we're trying to figure which tier level is best for us with LO #1 due in April. The health insurance companies have been incredibly unhelpful always defaulting to "silver is our most popular." Meh.

Thanks again! :)
