We use a travel crib of our own (Bjorn) that he's used to, though we did/will use whatever the hotel has if we fly. Basically, we turn off all the lights and try to keep the routine the same as at home. If there is a nook where we can put him where he won't be as disturbed, we definitely use it. Sometimes I put a muslin blanket over the crib to block some light. If he isn't too off-schedule, he does just fine. If he's overtired, not so much ... but that goes for home, too!

We'll be getting to the hotel around midnight, and we're checking out the next morning, so I don't think setting up a pack and play or crib would even be worth it-- I think at this age he'd just stand up and look around forever, and maybe even be scared and cry. I think we'll just put him in the bed with us again and wait for him to tire himself out again. I just hope this time I can stay awake long enough to watch him fall asleep.

The funny thing is, all along I've been of the camp of "never travel, he sleeps best at home" so we've very rarely traveled. But now that he's 2, I feel like he'll sleep if he's tired no matter what, so I'm actually excited to go. I'd love to go on a trip long enough to actually get him set up in a crib or pack and play and get him used to it to sleep in it every night.

It's good to hear that other parents have had success with cribs, pack n plays, and portable crib tents. The idea of just putting him down somewhere other than his room and walking away totally freaks me out... but if your kids did it, I guess RJ can do it too!

The last time we were in a hotel with LO, the pack n play they gave us was filthy so we just lay her in the middle of the bed with pillows all around her and then hid in the bathroom til she fell asleep (about 10 minutes). Of course, she was only 6 months then and wasn't so mobile. Since that time, we've trained her to sleep in a peapod plus so she'll be sleeping in that when we travel.

oh and what we do is take our video monitor, put charlie down and leave the room. we try to keep the routine identical to what it is at home. then when he's asleep we go back in the room.

i don't think my LO would ever go to sleep if we were in the same room. we've only left home once and we made sure that she had her own room and she slept fine in a pack and play. as others have suggested, can you set up the pack and play somewhere else - like bathroom, large closet, loft?

we have the same issue. he will sleep in a pack and play in a hotel room but he definitely doesn't sleep as well as at home and none of us are well-rested the next day.

we've always put charlie in pack n play and he's gone right to sleep. if he wakes up when you get to the hotel, can you start the bedtime routine all over again with the bath?

It's the same with us. LO has always slept on his own in his crib. He was never a good cosleeper as he liked to toss, turn and kick in his sleep. He'd kick us in the face and get upset that our face was in the way of his foot. Anyway, when he was younger, we would either ask for a crib/pack and play to be set up in our room by the hotel. Then we'd put him to sleep as we would at home and then we'd hide - in the bathroom or sitting on the floor on the other side of the bed - because if he saw us around, it'd be all over. That worked for a while. Now we have to cosleep because we have the second child with us. But he takes forever and a day to actually go to sleep. He is so amped up about being in our bed that he'll just play/talk to himself for up to two hours before going to sleep - all the while jumping on top of us, nudging, kicking. And even after he falls asleep, I have to wake up every hour or so to make sure he's not at the edge of the bed (even with all the pillows). It's so tough!

What about putting the pack and play in the bathroom? I'd try that, since it would be a room with a door, which seems to be the issue.

HAHA. Sorry to laugh, but so cute how he would be in your face smiling! My LO does that when I sleep with her. :)
My DD's only 9 months old, so I nurse her to sleep and co-sleep when we're traveling. If you plan on having him in bed with you, I'd just shut off the lights, say good night and I'm sure he'll fall asleep?
@HabesBabe: Disney hotels are so awesome!!

Can you check with the hotel to see if they have metal cribs? When I worked at a hotel, our property had pack and plays in every room (well, it was a Disney hotel) and we also had metal cribs that housekeeping could send up.

And if it's not too much money, think about getting a suite or a room with a loft (like a Residence Inn or another extended stay hotel). That way the baby has his own "room" (or you can use the closet if it's a really big walk in? Although that sounds a little mean... LOL).

So we've done this twice before. Both times we left home at bedtime and he slept in the car on the way to the hotel/destination, and arrived around midnight. We would bring him in to the hotel, he'd wake up, and once we were settled in to the room we'd start the process of trying to get him to sleep.

At home, we do our bedtime routine and put him down completely awake in his crib and he falls asleep on his own, so I'm pretty much completely baffled as to how to get him to fall asleep in a hotel.

Once we brought a pack and play, and he basically stood up in it for about an hour and wondered what the heck was going on, crying on and off. Eventually he must have fallen asleep because when I woke up in the morning, he was asleep.

The second time, we put him in the bed between us. He crawled around for quite a while (at least an hour), and we both laid down and pretended to sleep, but he would not stay still... I'd open one eye to check on him and he'd be in my face with a big old grin. It was cute, but so stressful at the time. Again, he must have fallen asleep at some point because I woke up in the morning and he was asleep, perpendicular to us near our knees. (He rolls a lot him his sleep so I was SO afraid he'd fall off the bed!! I put pillows EVERYwhere.)

We have another quick trip coming up (each of these trips are just for the one night) and we're planning on having him in the bed with us again, but I'm still so stressed out. I'm wondering how the rest of you deal with hotel trips if you don't normally co-sleep?
