She also said I don't have types 16 or 18 which are the 'really bad' strains, so that's a plus.

Just talked to my nurse and thought I'd update with the info she shared...
Typically under age 24 they don't test at all because its so common and will usually go away.
From 24-30 they will test for HPV only if the pap comes back abnormal.
30 and up they will test for HPV because it's more likely to cause problems at this point, or be a strain that isn't going to go away.

Since I know I've already had it 10+ years and it hasn't caused problems, I'm going to keep hoping it stays that way.
I was wondering if cervical cancer is genetic since my grandmother had it, but it's only caused by HPV, so now I know I'm not even more likely to get it.
I do want to get all my babies born though before it does cause problems with my cervix!

@josina: well if you think about it, it's HPV that causes abnormal paps. The only think you can do is monitor by pap. So there's really no reason to test for HPV UNLESS you want to skip doing annual paps. Currently, I haven't had a pap in 2 years because of pregnancy and my doctor is totally fine with that. My best friend has had abnormal paps, 3 strains of HPV, and colposcopies every year for like 7 years. All you can do is monitor.

@winniebee: So sounds like your OB isn't worried about it all as long as paps are normal... and that's how my nurse made it sound also, like no big deal even though I find it hard to agree.
@mrsjd: Thanks. I read that also today in my googling, that it can go dormant and reappear years later. Since I've been with DH for 10+ years I know that its the same virus just hanging out.

It was very strange. I had an abnormal pap and colposcopy done probably around age 25 (I was with my husband then). Then all normal paps until right after DS1 was born. My OB did a 6week pap and my pap was normal, but I came back positive for high risk HPV. Even though I'd been with my husband for 8+ years monogamously. So, even though my pap was normal, I had a colposcopy and it was fine. My next 2 paps were normal. MY OB said that sometimes postpartum your immunity can be really down and that's why I tested positive for HPV even though I had a normal pap. I'm not getting tested again for HPV so long as I have normal paps, I guess.

Tested positive years ago. Had a few years of concern where they did a couple colposcopies. Then my last few years its been normal.

@josina: Yes, it is natural to go to the worst place in your mind. Hugs! By getting your annual, you're obviously doing the right thing for your help. I forgot to mention in my friend's case, it was pretty bad but she was completely normal after a few weeks of recovery. And I actually think her situation was low level cancerous (I didn't inquire too deeply). I also should say I recall vaguely my doctor saying that it's common for HPV to go dormant for a while and then reappear randomly. It's always something I think about after every single pap.

@mrsjd: I half think that way they could give me good news "Your pap is normal" before they hit me with the bad news. ;)
Glad your case worked out... of course I worry about the worst case scenario but know that as long as I keep getting my paps it should be caught early.
@MrsSCB: Thank you! I'm hoping that since it's basically been hanging out for 10 years causing no problems that it will continue to do so! Still hard to not think awful things.

I'm sorry! Know that you are certainly not alone, as you can tell from PPs -- I think up to 70-some percent of adults have contracted HPV. I would just ask your doc how often you should be seen to check on things and then make sure you stay on top of it. And then tryyyy not to stress about it (I know that's easier said than done...)

I tested positive for HPV. Interesting they referred to your pap as normal. When I tested positive for HPV they designated it as abnormal and like others, I had to have a colposcopy and then be tested every 6 months until I had a regular pap. I think my 6 month pap was regular in that case. I had a very low positive, though. Also, I had Gardasil and still got it. It all freaked me the hell out at the time, but ultimately was no big. My biggest advice is to make sure you monitor it. A friend got it pretty bad and had to have a much more intense surgery to remove pre-cancerous cells.

@Mamaof2: I'm assuming so.
I'll have to call back and ask more questions. The nurse called while I was at work so I couldn't really ask anything without coworkers/my boss hearing.

@josina: I cant remember but I guessing not??

HPV can be present w/o issues but surprised they aren't testing you again before a year - maybe that's because your pap was normal though?

I got a call from my OB yesterday regarding my pap, never good. My pap came back normal, but I have High-Risk HPV.
I tested positive for it 10+ years ago but didn't worry about it then assuming it would go away. Obviously it hasn't.

Now is it just a waiting game for that abnormal pap to show up? Any chance it will just hang out nicely without ever causing problems?

Anyone else tested positive for HPV?
