Went for my hsg today, I was a little nervous because of things I’ve read, but luckily it was the easiest thing ever for me. No pain or cramping whatsoever, perhaps due to having had three babies already. Super quick, maybe a minute long procedure, and tubes were clear :)

I know this is an old post but I was frantically googling before my HSG this week and ended up asking my doctor specific questions which others may find useful. 1) When I booked my HSG they said they would do it days cd8-11. They could only fit me in on day 10. I told her we are ttc and I usually ovulate day 12, she said no problem. 2) At no point was I told not to have sex before or after procedure. Nobody even asked me before I had the procedure done ( I hadn’t just in case). 3) I was told to take 2 inbruprofen 15 mins before (I did). The first part of procedure is like a smear/ pap test with speculum. The uncomfortable part is next when they insert the catheter and some part of the material is suctioned on to you ( cervix, uterus, Im not sure which). That is what provokes cramping / contractions in the uterus and that is the painful part. They are aware of this and rush around being very quick to try and get it over with ASAP. The nurse told me its like mild labour contractions. I would liken it to period cramps ( I have never been in labour). It lasted only a few minutes and I had just started to feel a little nauseous ( like with my period cramps) then usddnly they took everything out and it was over. The pain stopped immediately. 3) I felt the dye come out with all the equipment, when I looked down on the table there was actually very little of it. I used 2 pantyliners that afternoon (11am procedure) and had some light stains on them from the dye. No bleeding or spotting. 4) After the procedure I felt a little tired and delicate but I think it was psychological/ from the ibroprofen. I often feel that way after taking pain relief for period cramps. No further pain or crmaping. I hopped on my bike and went back to work immediately after. 5) My HSG was normal, no problems. I told the doctor I was cd10 due to ovulate CD 11-12. I asked if this procedure could in any way influence ovulation, and when could I have sex again. He said no it would not, and I could have sex whenever I wanted. He said that this test can facilitate conception in the following cycles. 6) I had an almost positive opk the morning of HSG and positive that night. That means I should ovulate days 11-12 which is normal for me. 7) I had sex the same evening. I put a towel on the bed in case dye came out, and was worried I might feel a little sensitive. No dye came out at all during or after, and I did not feel any different from normal. 8) Today is the day after my HSG. I had no further dye coming out, no spotting and no cramping.

@Tionn3: I'm sorry you have to go through this stress. It sounds like all you can do at this point is wait and see what the results from the Kruger criteria come out to be on Friday and hopefully the doctor can go over everything with you guys and answer any questions. I'm glad you have a consult scheduled so they can go over everything with you guys.

DH was going to turn in his sample today but the lab is closed so he will probably turn it in later this week. I want to get the results before I have my consult which will be early next month. I'm interested to see how his analysis will come back because he was taking propecia for many years before we ttc and stopped 5 or so months ago.... I guess we will see once we get the results..

@Mrs. K: I'm trying to keep it together the best that I can. Upon more research it looks like the really important number was the total motile sperm count which was at 80 million, which is like 4 times above the cut off of what is considered fertile. However, now I'm obsessing over his morphology, which was only 6%. The cut off for the morphology on the SA was anything >= 4%, so he is above the cut off. I was under the assumption that this was the kruger strict criteria but I don't think it is(so confusing because both WHO and kruger use a 4% cut off even though the kruger is more strict than WHO in what they define as a normal shaped sperm). I think the kruger strict criteria is the lab result we are still waiting for and we won't get that back until this Friday...I'm really terrified that the kruger morphology is going to be under 4% ( I don't see how it could be the same or higher than the WHO 6% if it is a more strict criteria), and if it is...it means - well I don't really know what it means, but I don't think it is good for us...I rescheduled my consult for Jan 30th so that both me and my husband could go together. I'm hoping the doctor will be able to go over all the details of the SA with us, and I have a feeling he will probably order a second one for DH to do.

Did you get your DH's SA in? How did that go? Did you get the results back yet? I feel like our Kaiser was really fast because they made us drop it off at the hospital where they do the majority of their lab processing. I think it is all computerized except for the kruger strict criteria which is why it takes a week to get back.

@Tionn3: that's really great coverage! We are 50% so I'm not sure what it will be for us but I'm still grateful for whatever coverage we have. Surprised at how fast the results came back! I know how it can be hard to decide when to get the consult for yourself. It's like you don't want to jump the gun but you also don't want to waste time. You'll know when the time is right for you both

@Mrs. K: I have 50% infertility coverage so the semen analysis was 15$ After our coverage, and we got the results for one of the labs the same day, maybe an hour after it was dropped off. I scheduled a consult for me on Friday, but now I'm thinking about cancelling it...my husband seems convinced that because the total motile count was 80 million that the slightly below values for the motility weren't a big deal. He told me this is what the nurse told him.

@Tionn3: I don't know all the details of the SA parameters yet but my friend did tell me that her husband's SA came back "not the greatest" and some sperm were even swimming in the wrong direction. She then went on to have a little boy and girl with no problem! Even though your friend doesn't think the yoga will harm much I'm with you on trying to refrain from any activities that could interfere after having had tried for so many cycles. DH was recently looking at a cycling class and I had to nix that and told him to go running instead! Can I ask if your Kaiser coverage paid for all of the SA? Also, did you schedule a consult for you or for him for Friday?

DH is going to turn in his SA this week so I'll let you know how that goes. My AF is due the 21st so if she shows up I'll schedule my labs and hsg etc...

Hang in there... I know this is a tough road but we will get through this and eventually we'll be staring at our own :bfp: soon enough  sending you lots of hugs!

@Tionn3: also, what I think helped us was BD EOD and we made sure to hit o-2 and o on both cycles we conceived. I wanted to make sure that his progressively motile sperm had a chance to build back up between BD sessions. I think I've read that if there are motility concerns, the closer to O the better. I also used preseed in hopes of getting the sperm that were actually moving a better chance to get where they needed to be. I can't be sure of what actually helped, but those were the common denominators in both successful cycles.

@knittylady: I know! I'm gonna try to talk to him about it tonight, we shall see what he says. I at least want him to try. My obgyn friend was saying that it probably doesn't get hot enough in hot yoga to cause any problems. She was surprised they are not having him do the SA again because the motility numbers are just below the cut off, they might be normal on another SA...or they might not be.

@knittylady: I know =[ I seriously can't tell if the motility is low because of the hot yoga the night before or because of something else. It was 36% and it needs to be 50%...He only had 28% progressive ( completely moving sperm) and it needs to be more than 32%. It's like they are almost low normal...It has to be the heat right? I mean his count was so high. It was 236 million for the whole specimen and 143 million / ml. He has 80 million motile sperm per specimen which I guess is actually ok? I don't know...I need to talk to a medical professional about this to get an idea of if I am freaking out over nothing or not...

Which brings me back to me being pissed at my husband for baking his balls in hot yoga. Did I mention he went to hot yoga last night? It's like...well of course your motility is going to be low, because you're killing you're god damn sperm!!! NOW I HAVE PROOF!

@Tionn3: glad to hear your trip was great! DH and I hope to go someday as well.

I had no idea the fertility clinic was self referred. Good idea on getting the SA that's a good place to start. I can see how it can be scary for some men as they may feel like it is judgement of their "manhood" which is why I was so surprised DH was totally fine with doing his SA. We live close to the Kaiser so he was able to pick up his cup and bring it home lol... we shall see how it goes!

It's a great sense of relief to know you have a plan in place isn't it? I'm feeling more prepared for AF this month because I know that if she shows up I already have all the pieces in place to get seen at the clinic.

@Mrs. K: I had a great time in Ireland! It was so nice and beautiful, I definitely want to go back some day.

I actually heard back from my OB faster than I expected. She told me since I am close to the 1 year mark ( only 3 months away) she told me to call the fertility clinic, which I guess is self referred. I had them order my DH a SA so that we can have that information before the initial consult appointment, it was only 15$ and if it comes back normal I'm going to wait a couple more months before getting that initial consult appointment scheduled ( which is going to be probably $200-$400 out the door). My poor DH though, I think he is really scared =[, but he was very cooperative. I was luckily able to catch him on the phone before they called him to explain the SA to him. I kind of feel like a weight has been lifted though. Now that I have a plan, I can relax a little bit.

@MaryM: that's really interesting... I did read the part in TCOYF about cm and noticed that I don't have much at all and even when I "reach" for it it doesn't have the long stretchiness I often read about with fertile cm. I did have a colpo around ovulation recently and the NP said there was lots of stretchy cm when she was looking at my cervix so I have no idea what to think. Maybe it is just not enough? I am hoping that the appointment with the fertility clinic will help figure out all the obstacles we have, if any.

RE cervical mucous, I do a charting method that relies solely on that (since it's often a natural biomarker of unbalanced hormones)

Before I started this method, I thought I barely had any mucous. Once I did it for a while and was fully compliant (wiping BEFORE and after using the bathroom), I learned I actually had more to "read" than I imagined! (still not much egg white/super fertile mucous though)

My doctor has me on extended release B6 (I take P-5-P because I have MTHFR) to produce more mucous, and I take Mucinex from a couple days before expected peak until it's confirmed to thin the mucous that is there.

@Mrs. K: it's new research, or newish research. Plus I think so many people being deficient is also new, we tend to drink less milk and get less Sun exposure. At least there is a reasonable sized vitamin for it.

@snarkybiochemist: @periwinklebee: I have been deficient in the past as well but not so severe as to require prescription strength. Interesting that prenatals aren't made with more vitamin d in them since from what I've been reading- it seems to be a common contributing factor to infertility. Also given our modern day lifestyles, most people are deficient anyway so why not just make them with more d?! :silly:

@portboston: thanks so much for the info! I'm going to add that to my bag of tricks for this next cycle and hope it helps!

@Mrs. K: I started taking vit D for TTC a few months ago, as I've been deficient in the past and being deficient can cause infertility. I can't remember exactly how much off the top of my head. When I got super deficient a few years ago, my doctor prescribed a prescription strength one to get things back to normal.

@Mrs. K: My RE wanted me on at least 2000 IU vitamin D and my prenatal already has 1000 IU so I actually take 3000, she said up to 4000 was reasonable.
