I had this and breastfed fine for more than a year. By the time it was detected I was wayyyyy hypothyroid (my TSH was in the 60s). No issues BFing. No supplementing. I had to get on levothyroxine immediately obviously. (Still on it 4 years later.)

I do have a friend who had to stop BFing due to hyperthyroid medications.

I had thyroid issues postpartum. It was diagnosed based on lab work, but my GP wanted to monitor things and not put me on meds. I was able to EBF for a year, I never went on meds, and after I weaned, I didn't have thyroid issues.

@Mrs.Waffles: synthroid is the brand name, I think. It is levoythyroxin (sp??) I think. Just clarifying because I am in Canada and it may be different if you're in another country.
Feel better, it is not a fun feeling!

@wheres_c: Oh, I'll definitely ask when I see the endocrinologist. I'm hoping to be able to still breastfeed him until he's at least a year old. Thank you.

I was hypothyroid before I had my LO and was diagnosed with postpartum thyroiditis (TSH was almost undetectable) about 8 weeks after she was born. Since I was already on synthroid, my family doctor just adjusted my dose and it resolved. I EBF DD without issue!

@Mrs.Waffles:that sounds more like hypothyroid! I am hypo and took synthetic thyroid hormone with BFing. I quit for other reasons but I don't think it would be unsafe or effect your supply. Obviously ask your doc, but its fairly common!

@MrsKoala: to be honest I don't think the PA told me if I was hyper or hypo. I just remember her saying I have a problem with my thyroid and explaining why I feel so lousy. I believe I have hyperthyroidism based on the symptoms I'm experiencing (i.e. heart rate high, tired, hot intolerance, hungry all the time). She had originally prescribed PTU, but then called me later and told me not to take it and wait for what the endocrinologist would say, because she felt that she did not have much experience with patients that are breastfeeding. Thank you so much for your input.

I don't have postpartum thyroiditis but I have had hyperthyroidism and have to be tested every 6 months to ensure that it doesn't come back. Are you hyperthyroid or hypothyroid? With hyperthyroidism, I believe you can still breastfeed safely on PTU. You don't really need to make a decision about this until you speak to your endocrinologist, though.

I don't' have personal experience but my cousin did, she had to switch to formula to take the necessary medicine (she was not allowed to BF on it and the doc said she needed to get on it ASAP.) I know she had a pretty extreme case, so hopefully there are other options for you!

I think my mom had this when I was born. She warned me when I was pregnant that if I felt really weird after baby was born to get my thyroid checked. She EBF'd and somehow got it under control. And I'm just fine :).

Hi, I was just diagnosed with Postpartum thyroiditis and am wondering if any of you ladies are dealing with this and if you were able to still EBF your baby. I have not notice any drop in my milk supply. I'm a currently waiting to see an endocrinologist to see what my treatment will be. I'm really scared to take any medication while breastfeeding and I am thinking of maybe switching my 4 month old to formula. Just wanted to know any thoughts. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
