Thanks! Sent her back on Tuesday and she was fine. It looked like her mouth sores were gone, and all the others had totally cleared up.

DD1 - had HFM at 1 year old. She spiked a bad fever, then rash the day after two small sores appeared near her mouth. She was not allowed to return until her sores scabbed and her fever was gone. All in all it was a weekend plus three days of school.

DD2 - She had HFM (or a sister virus I think the Ped said), it was only in her mouth (two bad sores). She was out a full week...with both weekends 'contagious'. She had to wait until the sores in her mouth was healed. Otherwise if she chewed on a toy, drooled, licked, kissed, etc anyone it was contagious still.

HFM sucks...so sorry you are going through it!

DD didn't miss a single day of daycare because she never spiked a fever. Nobody said anything about the sores, other than that the whole class had them and that by the time they appeared everyone had already been exposed so there wasn't much point in trying to stop the spread.

The mouth sores are what stand out to me ... I was told that kids are still contagious until the scabs are noticeably healing. Definitely a few days past the fever (crazy your LO didn't have a fever - ours had a 105° fever). HFM is the worst!!

We had a fairly mild case of HFM, no mouth sores. Our doctor basically said it is so contagious that as long as there was no fever and the sores were scabbed over he could go back. Our doctor said that is why daycare policies are vague since it was most likely caught there and that once one has it, it is hard to contain. We ended up keeping him home for about a week.

@gingerbebe: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Thanks, ladies. What about mouth sores? I'm curious because it doesn't seem like they can really scab over. If your little ones had them in their mouths, had they totally healed and were gone by the time they returned? I appreciate the help.

If your LO had Hand, Foot, and Mouth, at what point did they return to daycare? I ask because LO's daycare policy isn't totally clear on their site, and with the holiday weekend, they're not getting back to me (neither is her doctor). Even the CDC doesn't have helpful info on this on their website.

She has 1-2 sores in her mouth that are healing. The rest of her bumps have either scabbed over (sorry, gross, I know) or have never opened. She never spiked a fever. It's been just about a week since she got sick.

DH and I both have major commitments at work this week and our back-up babysitters aren't available. Obviously we'll call out if we have to, but IF she's okay to go I'd rather send her. I'm curious to hear what others have done.

This is so scary to me. My sister is one of those people who can't get immunizations (well, she can but she can't build antibodies so it's useless) and she relies on herd immunity. I'm in Michigan and she's supposed to visit in a few weeks. I hope it doesn't get too crazy.

ETA- I do acknowledge though that sometimes you can get these diseases even after being immunized but certainly immunizing statistically helps the population as a whole.

@QueensBee: DD is getting over croup from last week, it seemed to be out of no where, she was acting irritable then bam the seal cough! She was given meds but the last few days the cough seems to be back :(
Last night she woke with 101 fever and was miserable!
She also has a bad diaper rash from meds!
My heart break for her, I just want her healthy again!
Pedi gave us a prescription Friday of amoxicillin if we thought the cough and her sinuses were getting worse.
He said croup sounds gone her lounges sound clear just the lingering cough and cold!
I really don't want to give her it, but now I am thinking other wise!

We just went through croup a few weeks ago... Sunday fine all day put her to bed she woke up around 1:30AM with the barking cough and the strider (the weezing when they intake air) we ended up at the ER from about 2am-4:30am they gave her an oral steroid and breathing treatment. and we followed up the next day with our ped. Both the ER ped and our ped said she had a pretty text book case. its often times gets worse before it gets better but the steroid would help get over that hump. she wasnt contagious and that was our only incident.

I had my first experience this fall, terrible. It didn't last long but it was scary to hear, sitting her up helped and then taking her outside made it go away. It was a cool but not cold night so I took her outside and had her sleep laying up
on my chest for an hour. The cold air helps. Then I had her sleep propped up. She acted pretty normal the next day but the next night she started coughing again but thankfully it wasn't the barking deal cough but I did prop her up for a few nights.
