Our 3.5 year old has an imaginary friend named Willy. Willy is a female giant who sleeps on her bedroom floor and occasionally gets into trouble. Willy then shrunk down and became pocket-sized so she could go to preschool with her for a while. It did make that transition easier. Willy appears occasionally, but has mostly faded away now (LO will be 4 in May).

@JennyPenny: Good point! Both of my boys' imaginary things happened around 2.5. DS1 just saw a lion outside of his bedroom window so that always freaked him out. DS2 has been talking about "little monster" for the past few months. It's really fun to ask him what little monster is doing. Sometimes he's at the food store. Sometimes he's running behind us when we're driving. I don't know much about him other than he's nice and apparently green.

I find it interesting that it looks like everyone's kids came up with their imaginary friends around 2.5-3!

My daughter started talking about her ‘’sister Olivia’’ when she was almost 3. It lasted about a year of nonstop Sister Olivia stories before she told us that Sister Olivia was pretend. During that year we had a few sightings of Sister Olivia or her car.

After that year we still hear a couple stories a week, but if asked she will say that Sister Olivia is pretend. She’s 4.5 now.

DD had an imaginary friend, Sochi, from about 2.5-4. She lived in the playhouse in the backyard and often invited DD out there for play dates. :silly:

For a while, DD had imaginary parents and they weren't us... It was when she first learned the word parents but had not yet made the connection that, in her world, Mama & Daddy = Parents. It was pretty hilarious but I tried not to discuss it in public. I'd try to explain and she'd yell "you're not my parents!".

DD1 had imaginary brothers from about 2.5-3.5... I think she's outgrown them recently. A lot of her friends at school had older brothers and I think she modeled them after that (they had the same/similar names as the friends' brothers). The brothers were usually older than her but sometimes she said they were younger or the same age as her depending on the moment. Pretty amusing except I think she had her teacher believing her for a while

@HappyBaker: Haha! That's so funny that his friend is busy sometimes. My DS also calls Minno on the phone occasionally. Now that I think about it, DS has lots of stories about Minno being at our house but he's very rarely present at the same time I am.

@JennyPenny: Yes! DD never had one but DS who is 3 does. His imaginary friend's name is "Poppy", and he's a musician and contractor / handyman. We think he is a kid because he gets dropped off at our house by his mom. DS has an old baby toy cell phone that he uses to call him when he wants him to come over. Usually he is busy or sick when he calls though, so Poppy isn't usually hanging out with us but he's definitely someone DS talks about all the time!

DS is 3.5 and has had his current imaginary friend Minno for almost a year. Before that he had an imaginary dog named Puntu. Minno is 4 and spends a lot of time at our house even though we aren't his parents. He occasionally travels - just last week he was gone to Tokyo for a while. He goes to school with DS some days, but not every day...

Does anyone's LO have an imaginary friend? I'd love to hear more about them! How old was your LO and how long did it last? What kinds of things did this friend do?
