This is how the NICU wrapped blankets since our little guy didn't fit in the infant insert. I think the same thing (minus the insert) would work for your situation.

@Bookish: I see. :/
@danda: this is what we did too. There were two pieces and we used just the head support for awhile.

@Bookish: I have the same as mrskc, and ours comes with a separate newborn insert and head support - do you have two pieces or just one? We removed the newborn insert at 11 pounds but we still use the head support. She was much happier without the newborn insert! I am planning to investigate soon whether I can adjust the head support to be higher up in the car seat.

@mrskc: Yeah unfortunately it's just a vague 'some babies need more head support' and they suggest using rolled up towels if it doesn't come with one. No end weight given, but I'd assume it's similar to yours.

@Bookish: have you looked in the car seat manual? Our chicco keyfit 30 said to stop using the insert when he reached 10 lbs. Then we just used rolled up blankets for head support.

@Bookish: Ok, so basically just a head support. By 3 months, R wasn't using anything at all, so I think you are more then fine to just use blankets.

Has she outgrown the seat in length?... or just too snug with the infant insert?

ETA: Oh nevermind, I see!
I would just try some rolled receiving blankets. :)

The grey insert in this pic. Ours is less obtrusive, but you get the general idea.

@Bookish: Do you have a picture of the insert? I can't picture what you are talking about? Our's just had the additional head support which we stopped using early, cause it made her so hot. We rolled up blankets on the side instead.

@Bookish: Don't feel silly - it's hard to know what is OK as far as modifications to car seat padding. Making sure your baby is both comfortable and safe is hard sometimes.

@Bookish: We would roll up two or three to put around his head. Usually his head would flop more to one side, so I would make that side thicker.

Here's an example of using receiving blankets in the car seat! This picture has them around the head, in between baby and the bottom buckle, and up the sides!

Our LO is a long, long baby. She's 3 mos now, and the little newborn insert in her infant bucket seat is a joke. It's getting in the way of her arms and her head is on the tippy top of it. Problem is, she really doesn't have the greatest neck control yet, so I've been wary to take it out, since it does provide a little bit of cushion still.

We are about to start some 1-2 hr road trips in the next few weeks, and I'm wondering- how do I keep her comfy without compromising the safety of her seat? Do I roll up towels to put around her? Get those things that wrap around the straps? It's still 90 degrees most days although it's starting to cool down, so I don't want something that's going to be terribly hot.

Advice, please!
