@ChitownRo: my oldest got it, I suspect at a library playroom in NYC, when she was about 3. It was so, so gross, but no one in the house (DH, me, or 18 month old) got it, and one of us took the meds prophylacticly (we were offered it).

We had pinworms at daycare and it only went through two kids. It can’t be that contagious. I talked to the dad of one of the kids and he said it wasn’t a big deal. Kid got a super itchy butt at night and wouldn’t sleep. Treatment was 1 pill for the whole family and it went away.

@ChitownRo: I have no idea. I don't think pinworms has ever been something that got reported home. And I never would have thought to report it to the school, since it's harmless.

@hitchhiker: @pinkb: thanks so much for your replies. When your kids (potentially) had it, did lots of other kids in their class have it too? Just wondering how contagious it is
(The concept of pinworms just freaks me out, way more than a normal virus, even if they don’t really harm you)

Omg got an email today that a kid in my DS’s kindergarten class has pinworms. I’m sure my son was exposed yesterday and then touched like everything in the house
I’m freaking out and started washing everything on hot in the washer but now upon reading, has a 2 month incubation period! Ugh.
Give me HFM any day over pinworms.

Any advice??

My aunt had shingles last fall and it broke out while she was helping take care of my dad who had cancer and was VERY immunocompromised. Doctor said it's touching that spreads it, so so long as everything stayed covered and she didn't touch my dad, it was fine.

I had shingles while pregnant with my second. It was scary because I had another baby under 1. I was holding her a lot and it was on my face. None of my shingles were ever wet, but that is what makes it spread. I actually wore a shirt with sequins on the top so that she would be interested in that not my face and I put safety goggles on so she couldn't get near it (it was around my eye). I was out of work for 3 days but then was told it should be safe to go back.

As a side note I had the vaccine about a year and a half before I got shingles. When I was preparing to become pregnant my tests showed I was not immune even though I believe I had chicken pox.

I had it this past fall, but it was relatively mild. I was concerned about it being contagious since I have two LOs, but the doctor told me only the rash/oozy part was contagious. Luckily, I caught it relatively early and didn't even have any oozing. I still maintained minimal contact with my LOs and DH for a few days just to be sure.

My mom just found out last week that she has shingles. I think on Friday she found out. She had been feeling symptoms for about a week prior to that. She's coming to visit this Wednesday so she was really worried.
The doctor told her he thought she wouldn't be contagious anymore this Monday (tomorrow). But he also said that direct contact is the only way to catch it. She has it on her rib cage and back. So as long as she's wearing a shirt it won't be a problem.

Additionally, when my son was 4 months old my husbands cousin had shingles and we were all supposed to spend thanksgiving together. She had it on her face! Our ped said as long as she didn't hold him we could spend the holiday together. So again, direct contact was the only concern.

Thanks all! DS had the vax at 12 months (he's 27 mo now) and my dad has also had the vax- but they say it only cuts the chance of getting it in older adults, it doesn't mean you are immune :/

My mom had it last year and she is our primary childcare. We kept DS away the first week or two because she was SO uncomfortable. Luckily once she was feeling better she was able to keep it covered with clothing so that it wouldn't spread. It was on her chest and back so it was easy to keep covered.

It's contagious until it's scabebd over and not weeping. Did he see a dr? They can provide anti-viral meds that can shorten the duration and help prevent the side effects. Btw your dad should be vaccinated for shingles if he hasn't been already.

There is a 95% chance my dad has shingles. He hasn't seen DS since before the rash appeared, so I'm not concerned about DS getting chicken pox or anything now (and DH and I have both had chicken pox and I have had the vaccine).

My question is- how long will my dad be contagious, and how long should I keep DS away from him? Besides being totally freaked out that my dad has it, and all the potential complications for him which I can't even think about, how long do you think he will be contagious? Any experience with this?

@.twist.: I thought I had thrush or a staph infection in my nipples for the longest time. In between feedings, I would get sharp pains in my boob and a burning sensation that would start in my boob and radiate towards my nipples.

Turns out, it is just my letdown. It took me a really, really long time to figure it out. I noticed that it happens when my boobs are full, I hear B crying, or I even think about feeding him. Oddly, when my letdown happens WHEN I am feeding, it is an itching sensation. I don't know why they are different.

Do you think there is any chance yours could be a painful or itchy letdown, too?

I'm sorry you're not having a good time of it at the moment!

My wee girl and I had thrush for about three months when she was just new (me nipple, her oral) and it definitely sucked! LO had white patches in her mouth and I had burning in my nipples. If your LO has oral thrush that could be making her gas worst as latching / nursing could be uncomfortable for her.

I would definitely make an appt to see your OB (particularly if your episiotomy is troubling you) but in the meantime you could try bathing your nipples in a solution of water and vinegar (http://www.llli.org/faq/thrush.html) and make sure you get plenty of air and sun on them.

I didn't know where to put this because it touches on postpartum, nursing and general health.

So on top of a cold I think I may have thrush...?

I'm not sure though. I have a feeling I have a yeast infection. But also my nipple have been a little itchy, and I've gotten sharp pains in my breasts randomly between feedings. L is super fussy and gassy. I can't tell if some of his fussiness is from this or the heat.

I'm in pain as well. Where my episiotomy scar starts, is red, hard and sensitive to the touch. So maybe it's infected?

Does does that sound like thrush? Should I be going to a walk in tomorrow or try and get in with my ob?

I don't know what to do or what issue to deal with. I'm so frustrated and it doesn't he,p that I can't stop bouncing L because he screams bloody murder at me. :(
