We've had them. Not to freak you out but they can be fairly destructive. I've lost countless sweaters (wool and cashmere) and coats to them. Blankets with any sort of natural wool or alpaca fiber. They love dust and pet hair especially. I'd be on the ground with a flashlight finding and killing them but you can't see the eggs. Eventually I'd find something they'd been feasting on. We didn't get rid of them until we moved out of our prewar NYC apartment into a newer condo. You have to be really diligent with dust and corners and under beds/behind furniture.

Again, sorry to probably freak you out.

Another thing it could be is a flour beetle. I can't really tell from your pic. Be sure to save a few of them for an exterminator so they know what they are dealing with.

@starlitsky: they're gross. Because they stick we sometimes find dead ones in our clothes, like a sweater   I hate living in a buggy place and it's not as bad here as some places! But maybe check your clothes (especially animal fibers like wool) or near wherever you have seen adults because if you have adults the larvae are eating something. Also check all your windowsills for adults to see if you have more ... they tend to try to escape by following the natural light I've been told and then they'll die there. Sorry it's all so gross

Yep, it's a carpet beetle and they are a pain in the ass! The bug you've taken a picture of won't do any damage. It's the larvae that will cause damage to your clothes, rugs, etc. I've attached a pic of what the larvae look like. They have little hairs all around their bodies that can stick to things and some lucky people (like me) can have an allergic reaction to them. I was convinced we had bed bugs last summer and it turned out to be carpet beetles. They don't actually bite though, so that's the good news. They are actually quite common, but if you are finding them regularly I would call an exterminator to do a treatment.

We have those too  keep an eye out the larvae damage clothes (especially wool) and rugs. We live in Texas and can manage them but not totally get rid of them. We have quarterly pest treatment for all the critters here

Recently I've been finding this tiny bug around my house. In the bathroom and on the bed, on fabrics mostly (vs on the wall). I've found maybe 3 or 4 in the past week which doesn't sound like too many, but compared to before when I'd see hardly any, it's kind of scaring me! Should I be alarmed or look for an infestation?!

We've always done the fogger cans and they work really well. We make sure to do it on a day that's nice out so we can open windows and let the house air out afterward for a long time. BUT now that we have babies on the way, I'm not sure how comfortable I am with continuing to do it.

If they're Daddy-long-legs type spindly spiders, I'd probably not worry about it, and just kill them as I find them. If they're the thicker hairier kind, I'd probably be more creeped out. But it's a matter of weighing the freakout factor when you go to the basement vs. adding extra chemicals to the house...which is worse for you, only you know! :)

We recently had exterminators come out to the new house because we have a real carpenter ant problem. Toxicity or not having ants eat away at our woodwork is NOT ideal. When he was here he noticed all the webs we had in the basement that we had thought were just cobwebs. Turns out they are spiderwebs. And there are TONS. So he went around the house checking and turns out there are spider webs all over the house in pretty much all the closets etc. And this is after 60% of the house has been cleaned by us!
So since it was included in our maintenance package we had him spray for spiders as well. I was NOT happy about it and we asked him to stay out fo the nursery and had my husband close the door and put a towel in front of it. He said to give it two weeks and he will come back. There will be time I think for another spider treatment before we move in. To allot enough time after the second spraying for the chemicals to work and for us to wipe everything down. Trust me I will wipe EVERYTHING down. I don't want our baby to start crawling, putting her hands on the walls and then putting it in her mouth.

According to the exterminator with spiders they are much harder to get rid of because they do not ingest the poison. And because their legs have "spikes" it never touches their body. And unlike other insects such as ants they don't clean themselves therefore even if the chemical is on their body they do not ingest it. So the best way to get rid of them is for other insects to ingest the poison then they eat the insect and therefore ingest the poison. And by getting rid of the webs it forces them to leave their nest to look for food.
I wasn't happy about the use of chemicals especially in a spray form but the alternative of a spider biting her is not ideal either.

@mrshopscotch - really, cardboard? Crazy. We use a lot of totes too.

@maysprout -may have to hunt for some webs.

Spiders are so nasty. When I sit on the couch, I feel like they are crawling all over me. Wish there was an easy, safe way to get rid of the 8 legged monsters!

Ugh we've been noticing spiders a lot in our basement too (and the nursery is in the basement!), especially with the warmer weather, all of the spiders want to be in the nice cool basement!

Right now we're just trying to clean everything up that we can...buying big storage containers to put things in vs. storing things in cardboard boxes (apparently spiders love cardboard!)...so far we haven't seen any place where they are coming in, but who knows. Ick! I hate them.

We have a friend who used to own a diy bug store. We always have him take care of it. He uses the least harmful stuff for us since we have a dog and baby. Maybe you could talk to someone at a store like that, I'm sure they could give you some answers.

I just take down their webs regularly with a broom then a vacuum. You may want to try and see if there are places they're getting in and try to block those areas up and clean up any brush touching the house in that area. I don't like to use harsh chemicals for stuff like that, figure if i's bad for a spider it's probably bad for most people in the house. I read somewhere orange oil is a deterrent to spiders but never tried it myself.

Ew! I hate spiders and all bugs in general. We just kill bugs with soap water but not in big amounts. Just the spider here and there. I'd be kind of worried about the chemicals too. Curious to hear from other HBers.

Recently I've found a few (large!) spiders in our basement. I hate spiders! My husband sprayed the outside of our house but I'd like to kill the ones already living in our basement. He mentioned we could do a bub bomb or a fogger but I'm worried about all the chemicals. My son is 6 months old and I am just worried about his exposure to such things. They say it's safe after a few hours and we would probably be gone for 9+ hours. I'm hesitant, I feel like the chemicals will stay in the carpet, furniture, etc.

Not sure what to do...anyone tried to get rid of insects in the past? What have you done? Any more "natural" products out there...? We don't have a HUGE spider problem, but I'm just not comfortable in our basement anymore after seeing a few recently.
