Ultrasounds aren’t necessary. A friend of mine insisted on one every appointment because she wanted to see her baby. If my husband would go for it (unlikely) and if it was straightforward to use. Maybe if there was a rental option like there is for Dopplers. I got a Doppler for my second pregnancy and it was the best.</p> <p>ETA: I’d only want it for before you can feel the baby move which is how long I use the Doppler for. I'm not sure how good a constant ultrasound waves would be for me or the baby (you can chime in since you are an MD.) To be honest, half the time at ultrasounds I can't really tell what I'm looking at to begin with so if I couldn't' find the heartbeat or an arm or something I'd be way too worried. I know the price point for the medical version of this is ~$2000 which is a drastic decrease from what prices used to be.
