After I had the stomach flu, I had intense itching in my hands and feet. It was unbearable. I was putting ice packs on my hands and feet at night because it itched so bad. I called my midwife and she ordered some tests for cholestasis, the liver enzyme panels came back high but my bile salt(?) was normal, and the itching resolved. She had me repeat the liver enzyme panel and they went back to normal. She thought it was possible that when I had the stomach flu (probably from norovirus) that it messed with my liver enzymes from all the throwing up and dehydration, and made me itchy. I was 23/24 weeks pregnant at the time. I would call your doctor, it is a simple blood test for cholestasis of pregnancy, but the bile salt blood test is a 2 week turn around for whatever reason.

I had really intense itching near the end of my pregnancy and it turned out that it wasn't cholestasis, but I'd call and try to get in early--if I remember right, the blood test they do has 2 parts and the second part takes awhile to get results, so I'd assume that they want to get your bloodwork done asap.

In the meantime, oatmeal baths help soothe the skin

Thank you ladies! This pregnancy has just been crazy once third trimester hit. I've gone in the hospital for so many things. From my 60lbs dog landing on my stomach to high blood pressure to false alarms with decreased movement and contractions. I just dont want them to think I'm a crazy lady. All have been legit reasons. I just hate the craziness. I never felt with this as much with my other two. My husband is really nervous about the itching so he wants me to call today. It wasn't so bad this morning right now but last night it was so annoying.

Definitely mention cholestasis to your doctor. It's not uncommon but can be dangerous for baby! Don't feel bad at all, it's their job and those symptoms shouldn't be ignored!

So starting today I've had some itching. It's all over but mostly in my elbows, hands and ankles and feet. It's not unbearable just annoying right now. I finally broke down and just now took a benadryl. I have no rash though and I haven't changed my detergent. I'm nervous about cholestasis...the liver thing. I don't want to over react though. I have an appointment Thursday. I also have been having some dull pain under my right ribs. It comes and goes but hurts more when I eat.

Does this just sound like some normal itching and just mention it at my next appointment or should I call tomorrow and ask. I've had so many issues with me not feeling her move and word blood pressure days I feel bad. I feel like im being a nuisance.

LO is 17 days old. Recently I have been experiencing itching in whichever breast I am feeding her from. It is not the nipple that is itching-- it is the entire breast. :bummed: The itching seems like it is under the surface and there is no visible cause (such as rash, stretch marks, etc).

Background: I have been breastfeeding, pumping, and also supplementing with formula (due to excessive weight-loss in her first 24 hours). I feed her from both breasts every 2 hours during the day. At night she gets a bottle and I pump. I also pump a few times during the day. I do not feel the itching sensation when pumping.

I tried Dr. Google and everything keeps suggesting mastitis, but I don't have any other symptoms of mastitis (pain, swollen breasts, fever, etc).

Has anybody else had this or anything like this??

My legs used to bother me at night before I got pregnant. It somehow disappeared since. I noticed that re-hydrating them usually works. I basically ran the shower on them for a few minutes, then lathered with lotion.

When it was really bad, I'd apply Witch Hazel - it always worked. I'd stuck to Witch Hazel more often if it didn't take so long to rub on with the little cotton swabs.

@c.sassy: sorry if I'm being dense, but what's RLS?
Aha. Just googled it. Yeah it does seem similar enough, I never made the connection because DH's BIL has it and he's always twitching, morning noon and night, I never thought of it as something you could have sporadically. I'm going to try my moisturizer on it now, fingers crossed that fixes it for tonight!

Maybe it's a mild form of RLS? Apparently, RLS is something all women in my family are bound to get at one point or another (awesome), and I've noticed since being pregnant that I've had symptoms of it... and it's similar to what you are describing. My only relief has been to walk around for a little while.

The last week or so my legs are driving me nuts, every night around 8-9pm. I'll be 28 weeks Thursday. It's not itching, exactly- at least scratching is no use- but my legs are irritated and agitated every evening when I sit down. Sometimes body lotion helps, which led me to assume I was dehydrated, but sometimes the lotion makes no difference at all. I don't have swollen ankles or varicose veins or anything like that, thankfully.
Any ideas? Is this just a third trimester circulation thing? It's not a huge deal, but it is annoying- I went to bed at ten the other night and was tossing and turning for two hours- some rest that was!
