@brownie: Sorry to hear about the allergies! I have allergies too, but skin reaction is new for me. I guess I'll have to buy some calamine lotion soon if this doesn't clear up in a day or so. Thank you for the suggestions!

I am someone with skin allergies and am often covered in some sort of rash or hives. Benadryl won't touch the itch. Best things are topical such as calamine lotion (old school) or there is one spray on anti itch I love but don't remember the name. I sometimes use vinegar because it is available. Zyrtec can be used for skin allergies but I have low blood pressure and it just makes me feel drunk so I can't take it.

Good luck, itching sucks. Remember it cousins be worse. The worst for me have been itchy feet and itchy ears.

Just wanted to vent. Have a small heat-rash type thing on my neck and a flushed area on one cheek. The cheek doesn't itch but the neck does. I've broken down and started taking Benadryl to combat the itch, but it barely helps. :bummed:

I had some hives early on that went away after a few days, but if it gets really bad, you might want to check with your doctor to make sure its not cholestasis, which is a liver/gallblader condition in pregnancy.

@cranberryapple: I know, I felt so bad typing it because I knew it was not good news for you!! The cold baths do suck but it's such sweet relief from the itch that it's totally worth it! I'm 8 weeks pregnant right now and am expecting them to start any time...

Also, my OB referred me to a dermatologist because she had never seen it before (I do think it's pretty rare) and they prescribed a steroid cream. I used it for a few weeks because it did cool me off but it didn't prevent them. After a while I just felt uncomfortable using a steroid while I was pregnant so I quit. Cold compresses helped too! Avoid hot showers and sweating, if possible! They are definitely brought on by heat/friction.

I had a bad rash over my lower extremities starting around 6 weeks postpartum with my DD, and it did not go away until I stopped nursing (four months). It was definitely horomone related. I have never been so itchy in my life! Hope yours doesn't hang around too long..

I got PUPPS, which is a pregnancy related rash, at 36 weeks, and it was my first pregnancy and I had a boy. It is so terribly itchy, and nothing really got rid of the itchiness, but my midwife prescribed a steroid cream that did help. Good luck, I was so miserable and I didn't have to deal with it that long! I hope for your sake it's not PUPPS!

This happened to me! It started around 12 weeks and, like you said, they completely covered my body the first night. They'd get better during the day then return in the evening, though not nearly as severely as the first time.

It happened everyday throughout my pregnancy and probably for another 3-5 months postpartum. Then they would happen still occasionally up until a year postpartum. I definitely agree it's a pregnancy ailment, caused by hormones. Cold baths were a lifesaver for me!

Oh and I had a boy! ;)

I'm currently 7 weeks pregnant with my second, and two days ago, I started breaking out with the worst case of hives in my life! Like, all over my back, belly, arms and legs. That was the first night. Then, in the morning, it got better, but by the late afternoon, they started returning, but this time on my lower body. It led me to google hives during pregnancy, and I'm convinced this is a pregnancy-related ailment. I haven't changed any of my routines or what I've been eating, so I can only assume it's related to hormones. These hives get in the way of my sleeping too! So darn itchy! Anyone else have this experience? When did it first appear and how long did it last? What did you do to treat them? And, bonus question: Did you end up having a boy or twins? Hahaha. (Read somewhere that hives could occur during a first pregnancy, having a boy, or with multiples! Don't know how true that is, but just for fun....) ;)

Thanks you guys !!!!!

I called this morning and nurse thinks I can chill out because it sounded like the aftermath of the virus and possibly parts from reaction from the shots. She said since he doesn't have a fever it wouldn't be contagious. I asked about if I should change his diet and she said she will give it another week because she believes it is not an allergy and it will clear up on its own. So fingers crossed!!!

My son often gets rashes over his chest, neck, and arms from viruses and loose stools during and after about a week recovering. All sounds normal to me since we've been through it a few times the past 3 years. It's just the way his body processes viruses. He's really healthy otherwise. It definitely freaked me out the first two times it happened and I kept checking with my pedi, asking questions, sending pics of the rash, etc. now I just take it in stride, lol!

Fwiw, dairy does irritate the bowels further if having loose stools or full on diarrhea, so I limit dairy or cut out for at least a week when my son has gotten viruses. Have you heard of the brat diet? It really helps firm things up again and plenty of water if your child is over a year old.

I think there's a lot of common viruses that could potentially cause those symptoms, but my first though was roseola. When DD got it, she had a high fever for 3-4 days and she was cranky/eating less/had diarrhea during that time. When the fever broke she broke out in a red rash all over her torso, creeping up onto her neck. The rash lasted a couple days, I think.

Hopefully your doctor can give you something more definite after you call her tomorrow!

I feel like I am repeating myself but this seems to be never over...

LO had his 1-year (chicken pox) shots Friday before last. He had a fever almost all week last week, accompanied by a cold with a lot of mucus and coughing. We went to the doc twice and they think probably it is a virus (not antibiotics treatable).

I noticed he had a rash developed on his wrist in the beginning of last week but didn't pay much attention to it, thinking it was an "after effect" of the chicken pox vaccine.

So this week, his fever finally is gone (knock on wood!!) However, he seems to have a lot of poopy diaper episodes. He poops a lot normally (once a day at least) so I am not exactly sure if that's truly abnormal, but his stool is definitely more lose than normal. He pooped 5 times today and one of them was a blow out. It is a bit much even to his standards. On top of that, his rash got worse since last Friday. We actually went to the doc last Friday (as he had a bad night and his fever was still on and off), and doc said it is probably the whole package from the virus. She said it shouldn't be from the chicken pox vaccine because the rash itself looks different.

Today the rash got pretty bad. it is now over his body and the original rash on his wrist was very bumpy and red. Some was on his face and neck too. I imagine it is a bit itchy too because LO was scratching a bit when we were taking a bath. Daycare said they noticed it broke out after lunch and after his nap (he went down from 1-3pm), and they thought it was food / milk allergy... but we've been eating the same things and he's been on cow's milk since Jan 14.

Have you had such an experience? What could it be? I will call the doctor tomorrow but it just drives me nuts. My husband scared me yesterday what if it were meningitis but he no longer has the fever. He seems pretty normal otherwise ... no fever no crying. Knock on wood!

You might want to make sure your OB knows about this so they can check your liver enzymes. Extreme itchiness without a rash that doesn't respond to the usual measures is sometimes cholestasis of pregnancy, and needs to be treated.
