@Mrs. Bee and @erwoo: thank you so much, it makes me feel better to know others that went through the same thing... The staff at the hospital were less than helpful in explaining it to me. He is awesome at breast feeding and has been getting so full that he even refuses the formula when I try afterwards. Pooping like mad too so hopefully that will help "fix" things more quickly!

Both my boys were Coombs positive. It's when mother's blood type is different than baby's. My oldest didn't have to be under the lights until his 5th day and only for 24 hours. My youngest went under at hour 14 bc his levels went up pretty high so they wanted to treat right away. He was in the incubator at the nursery until his fourth day only coming back to my room to nurse every 3 hours. He didn't have to go back bc as he gets older and poops it out the less concerning his levels are even if it seems high. Ask his ped about it. Like Mrs. Bee said, it is scary at first and the blood draw sucks but you will soon forget it all soon enough. His ped will be on top of it and make sure to keep him by a window after you go home and feed feed feed to help him poop it out. I had zero problems supplementing to help the second time around and didn't have issues with nursing. Hang in there!

olive was coombs positive, as well as positive for all the other factors that increase the chances of jaundice -- east asian descent, sibling had it, and she was a preemie. it did take a while for her levels to go down (they went down slowly), but she didn't have to go under the bili lights again after the 48 hours.

i wasn't scared because i'd already been through it with charlie.

hang in there mama -- i know it's scary and those blood draws are so sad. :( but it's amazing how quickly you forget the experience when you're busy caring for a newborn. he will be better soon, and they are pretty aggressive about treating jaundice way before it gets to a level close to dangerous.

Has anyone else had a Coombs positive baby? I never heard of this until last Thursday when I delivered my baby boy. My blood type is O+ and his is B- so i guess this is what causes it and now he is jaundiced. Just wondering how long it took for the bilirubin levels to even out and how long your baby had to stay under the billi light or blanket? He spent almost 48 hours under the billi blanket at the hospital and we were released with normal levels on Sunday, however we had our first drs appointment today and it looks like the levels increased again so we may have to go back to the hospital until they level out again.

How long did it take for your newborn's bilirubin levels to be in the normal range? It's breaking my heart that he keeps having to get stuck in the heel for blood draws, and breast feeding is hard enough but even harder with the billi blanket wrapped around him and don't even get me started on having to supplement with formula. Ugh!

Would love to hear your experience... I haven't been able to find much about Coombs on my own.
