Oh noooo....a friend at work told me about Valley hospital in Ridgewood which is sooo far away from me, but their website is SO AWESOME and of course, right at the top of the page, it says "Private rooms for ALL mothers, no extra charge". They also have holistic birth options, hydrotherapy tubs, midwives, and doulas!

Now I'm wondering if I would risk that drive in rush hour to get all those amenities...... food for thought.

@LindsayInNYC: I checked that link, but there's not a real maternity services link, just a link to information about breastfeeding. I like NYU's new parent handbook and all the information I read.

I also want to find a hospital that isn't stingy with things like the mesh panties I keep hearing about, and anything else I might need for baby or me in recovery. But people don't talk about that stuff much (except here on Hellobee in the blogs, which I appreciate).

I'm not on twitter, sadly. But maybe one day we can have a hellobee meet up!

@Anagram: I live in Hoboken! We delivered at NYU (the day before the hurricane and were evacuated!) because that's where my doctor is. Also, Hoboken hospital does not take a lot of insurances so you should first look into whether or not it is even an option. I have a lot of mommy friends though who delivered at Palisades and all of them had a great experience.
I was nervous about making the trek into NYU once I was pregnant, but i went into labor in the middle of the night, so it was fine. PLus, we have a car. I had very odd circumstances, being there during the hurricane and the generator collapse/evacuation, but I have to say, my nurses were top notch, and aside from the whole power outage, I was really pleased with the care there. It helped that we got a private room though. The rooms are small, and I could see being kind of annoyed to share such a small space with another mom.
@LindsayInNYC: I'm happy to answer any questions re: NYU.

I am going to be at NYU - it's true that they haven't opened yet but I am not due til July and my doctor's regular office is open and nobody seems concerned about the OB floor reopening. I also considered St. Luke's/Roosevelt but ultimately am going with NYU because it's closer to home. The only NYC hospital I've heard bad things about is Beth Israel - I think Lennox Hill, St. Luke's, Mt. Sinai, NYU, etc. are all supposed to be great, but from all my research I do think that the private room situation is totally first come first serve after birth and you have to pay for it (as PPs have noted). It doesn't seem like there is anywhere that gives a different option, though.

Look into St Barnabas Hospital in Short Hills/Livingston. its THE hospital to go to. World renowned NICU and medical staff. I have several friends who have been there and they say its like a spa. my CEO even recommends it

@Anagram: I'm a bit west of you in Hoboken but I delivered at Morristown Medical Center and it was wonderful! All the post partum rooms are private and they just renovated that area and the NICU (which is wonderful!) recently. As an added bonus, they give their new mamas a massage and a nice(r) dinner for the new parents the night before discharge.

I also used to work at Hackensack University Medical Center and they had a pretty good reputation for L&D... I believe all of their post partum rooms are private as well!

Have you looked into Valley Hospital, Holy Name, Hackensack, etc?

We'll be living in NYC by the time we have a LO but my ob/gyn there is part of NYU Langone. I don't know if I would want to deal with a doctor in NYC while living in NJ. Once you go into labor, you're stuck with either public transit or traffic to get to the hospital. =/

I delivered at mt Sinai too. It was a great experience. The nurses are really nice and I would recommend it highly. But it would be a pain in the butt for you to get there from NJ. We had a private room which I really wanted but we had to shell out $750 a night. In my opinion it was worth it because we had to share a room with another baby for our most recent hospital visit And you get absolutely no sleep at all when the baby next door and your baby are on different crying schedules. Mt Sinai also has a really good nicu unit if you need that...I think the quality of doctors in NYC is better than in the suburbs but I could just be making an assumption there. If you have an easy pregnancy with no complications maybe go for a NJ suburb hospital. If you bare high risk then maybe a NYC hospital. Good luck!

@LindsayInNYC: I thought about it! A random aquaintance told me the JC hospital is much better now than it used to be, so I went to the website, but then they had almost 0 information about their maternity ward online and I couldn't find anyone on online forums who had experience there either, so that scared me off.

We are thinking about getting a bigger place before the baby comes, so we'd be looking at JC as well for our new place. Maybe I should get a tour there anyway. I just wish their website was a little....more enticing.

@Anagram: what a great resource friend! she can definitely tell you about all the different units she's been to. I know for sure though that NYU rooms are very cramped. I loved my midwife/OBs there though (Spring OBGYN practice in Soho).

Cornell rooms were much more spacious and up-to-date. I got lucky getting into a good Cornell OB's schedule... a lot of them didn't accept new patients (and as I said, I even worked at the hospital too), So there's that. Consider Roosevelt too... I would've gone there to their Birthing Center if my insurance had covered it (a med-free birth was a priority for me the second time).

you have a lot of factors to consider though. I say prioritize the kind of pregnancy/birth you envision and go from there. I know to the rest of the nation, shared rooms are almost unheard of after having a baby, but if factors such as your OB choice, distance from your home/work are more important, cater to those first. But in my experience, a shared room after birth wasn't too bad. If I lived in NJ though, I think I would've preferred a NJ suburb hospital.

@NYCaliMama: good to know. I have a friend in nursing school at Columbia who does rotations in different maternity wards so I'm going to ask her, too. But sometimes I like to hear the patient perspective more than the nurse's perspective, you know?

thanks ladies! I wouldn't mind spending the money for a private room, assuming I would have a typical birth and only be in the hostpital for a couple of nights.

I only say that because if I were still living in my old state and at my old job, my insurance would have been much worse and having a baby would have cost me somewhere between $4000-$6000 dollars out of pocket (that's what most of my teacher friends paid there on our teacher insurance to have their babies).

At my new job, our insurance seems to be insanely good. We pay $0 if the doctor and hopital are in network, and every hospital I've looked at so far are in network. All my doctor's appointments are $0 after my first one, where I paid $10. My ultrasounds are all free, too. It almost seems too good to be true, but I've called my insurance company to ask all of these things. Even if someone, like an anesthesiologist, is out of network, I pay 20%, and insurance pays 80%.

So, knowing that makes it seem like $1200 for two nights in a private room isn't so bad after all....if that makes sense? but seeing that all the hospitals around here seem to be private-rooms-IF-available, then I guess I can stick with Hoboken hospitals unless I do the tours and think they seem awful or something. I also have no idea if hospitals in Hoboken have NICU units (just in case), but I guess I'll find all that out on the tours.

I know I'm a freak to be worrying about this so early, but I am!

It's the same situation in the city with shared rooms and private rooms... if not worse! I delivered at both NYU and Cornell... both times, not only were the private rooms several hundred dollars a night, they were pretty hard to get because of waiting lists. Usually you can only request a private room only after you give birth, so it's really just pure luck that you can get one that's not already being used. I even worked for both hospitals at the time I had my babies, and not even that was enough pull because once a patient is there, they have it for the rest of their stay and there aren't very many private postpartum rooms per hospital.

So it's just something most moms in the area just deal with... My roommate the second time had her hubby sleep in the chair next to her. At Cornell, as long as your roommate is okay with it, it's fine... not sure about other places. I think a lot of times the hubbies just don't stay overnight if you get a shared room.

But aside from that, the medical care the babies and I received were great.

I think Hilsy85 is pretty spot on with her assessment of the situation. Most NYC hospitals offer private rooms, but they are not in abundance. NYU hasn't even opened yet since Sandy. I think Long Island would be pretty far for you.

Perhaps a NJ suburban hospital might be an option? I live in NYC, and don't know anyone in NJ so I can't really give a rec. Have your co-workers offered up any suggestions? Good luck!

I delivered at mount Sinai and had a great experience. That being said, i don't think any of the NYC hospitals can guarantee a private room due to space constraints. At mt Sinai it was first come first served, and we luckily were able to get one.you also have to pay for it--ours was like $600 a night, and insurances does not cover any of it. I do think that some hospitals on long island, like northshore, have all private rooms for new moms. If you're still interested in giving birth in NYC I've also heard good things about Weill Cornell and t Luke's. Nyu is also good but I don't think they're up and running yet.

My husband and I live in Hoboken and we went to our first appointment with one of the most well-known ob/gyn practices here in Hoboken. They deliver either in Hoboken University Medical Center or Palisades. We are scheduling appointments at both of those hospitals to do a tour.

But I have read of a few Hoboken mommy boards that neither of those hospitals guarantees a private room, although they will give one if they can. This freaks me out. We just moved her last summer and in our old city, it would be unheard of for people with good insurance to *not* have a private room. None of my friends or sisters have ever had a shared room and I don't know why the idea horrifies me so much, but it does.

Anyone here have experience with either of those hospitals?

Our other option would be to switch to someone in the City. My husband works in midtown, and I am a teacher so I will be on summer vacation when our baby is due, so I could easily get to the city if I started labor. But then I will need to look for a new doctor. This has it's plusses and minuses. It would be MUCH easier for my DH to come to appointments in the City, but harder for me (I work in jersey), but again...I'm a teacher so I finish work at 3:15 or so. He works till 6:30 usually.

So, any experience with hospitals/doctors in the city? Which are good, which should I avoid? Do I have a better chance of getting a private room there or should I stay in Hoboken?

We just moved here 6 months ago, so I have no mommy/pregnant friends as of yet.

People at my job (I work further out in Jersey) are horrified of me giving birth in either the City or Hoboken. They tell me going out to Hackensack or even further away is the way to go!

So I'm feeling pretty conflicted.

help? =)
