That's a good point though, we're just priced out of the 'next neighborhood' right now as it is mostly new development or a much longer commute. We are also moving back home (hopefully in summer 2018) so my husband can go back to school and change careers. I keep seeing great jobs at home (for me) but we are financially committed to our current city because of our lease and our preschool contract (it's a small coop, so we have to pay the year anyway if we leave in case they can't fill our space). We live 8 hours from his family and know that we want to move back to that general part of the country long term. I'm miserable in my current job but I hate to look for something around here while pregnant knowing that we're going to move eventually. It's almost like is there anything I can do to be less miserable and wait it out till after the baby and then start looking to move, or do we just decide to start looking to move now? Our current area is very affordable and we have the same exact worry about daycare, or worse, being at the bottom of a long wait list in the new area if we move. Sometimes there are no good choices, just the ones that hurt the least. Moving home would only mean moving 45 minutes away, but we would be leaving our excellent daycare and I would likely try to find something in the school system (end goal is to either work part-time or on a school schedule). So jobs aren't easy to come by, and really aren't easy to come by outside of a silicon/tech area.</p> <p>But we have decided we don't want to raise our kids where we are. Schools aren't good and the community is really transient. At this point all our friends have moved away except for our neighbors (who finish their program next April and will leave then).</p> <p>In researching a move back home, it has become clear that our daycare is amazing and we won't find one like it or as cheap back home. Since LO 2 will be starting daycare soon, our costs would literally quadruple if we moved now. Plus, LO 1 just got used to this new daycare after the last closed and they have saved a spot for LO 2.</p> <p>It is so hard to know that we want to move back home, but I'm starting to realize that maybe we need to wait just a bit longer for the sake of the kids and the budget.</p> <p>So do I keep looking for jobs back home, or look locally, or even I guess stay at my current place that I'm not thrilled with? We were just in a risk taking life changing mood I think! We made some sacrifices on the home front but we've survived so far (8 months and counting!). I'm basically a stay at home mom for now, but I'm blogging, exploring some other online business options and doing some freelance work (and people are paying me, whoo hoo!). </p> <p>I'm definitely still in the midst of the transition but I don't miss my old work at all and I don't regret it for a second. Most things that are hard or scary are worth doing. You can totally do this! You could also probably find a career advising place that could help you with your resume and/or give practice interviews. I'd highly recommend seeking that out. We have a service in my city that is free for job seekers! And if that doesn't exist, get a friend to interview you. Think up potential questions, go to the Library and get some interview books. You've GOT this!</p> <p>ETA: I also switched career paths after realizing that many aspects of my previous career weren't working for me anymore. Now I adore my job. It was hard to break into my field, but it was totally worth it. It also helped me to find a mentor to help explain how to get into the industry and what they might be looking for in interviews. Don't sell yourself short. You have a lot of knowledge and skills that will be applicable in a new job/industry. Renewables and O&amp;G are both part of the Energy Industry. No matter where you are in the Energy industry, you have to understand basics - how to harness natural resources, convert them into a usable form, and get them to the consumer. You also understand how government regulations shape the industry.</p> <p>I'm a huge believer in applying for interesting jobs. I think going through the interview process helps you learn a lot about what you do and don't want in a new job/company and better help you decide if its worth it to switch jobs or not. Its also a great way to expand your network, practice your interview skills, and learn more about a new job/field/industry/company.
