@MissLace: My kidney stone (which was about 9 mm long and 5 mm wide) hurt horribly for a few hours (ended up in the ER with morphine and some other pain meds) but after a day or so, the pain had subsided (though it was still in my ureter). Took about 2 weeks to pass, but the pain was minimal after those first few days. I HOPE yours minimizes too! The only good news I can share... the kidney stone was way worse for
me than labor so maybe labor will feel easy for you after this!!

@AggieDaze: yup I've been drinking a ton and they gave me antibiotics (so I wouldn't get a UTI) and painkillers but the intense urge to pee (with barely a few drops coming out and intense burning) hasn't really stopped. I've been taking Azo as well which the doctor cleared for a few days and it's still not really helping. I just can't imagine feeling like this for three more months 😩

Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry. I just had my first kidney stone. Luckily I wasn't pregnant but it was absolutely awful. No advice, but well wishes - hope the stent helps with the pain and everything! Did they tell you to drink tons of water?

I just had to get a stent put in due to a huge kidney stone blocking my ureter tube on my left side at 27 weeks pregnant. I need to get it replaced in 6 weeks, then removed a few weeks after I give birth. It's pretty miserable so far and I haven't been able to find a single positive story from anyone that's gotten one while pregnant. Have any of you had to deal with this? The pain in my back flank is gone for the most part now but I feel like I have a super intense UTI now which they said would be expected for a few weeks. It sucks so bad...

We are dealing with a different vague diagnosis with one of our twins and just wanted to say I know how much it sucks to have no control right now. Ours may have a closed rectum and may need surgery after birth - but it's still too soon to tell. Preparing for something like this is stressful to say the least.

@yellowbeach: By the way, from stories I heard I hated taking my meds before surgery. Only my grandpa could easily give them to me but I was a champ in the hospital. Everyone else was way more concerned about me while I was so young but I was oblivious to anything wrong. I kind of liked it. I just talked to my mom. She said my surgeries at age 4 and 5 (almost 6).

@yellowbeach: copy paste from another thread. My DS has hydronephrosis, he is now 3.5 y/o. It was detected around the time of my 20 week anatomy scan if I can remember correctly. So after he was born I told our pediatrician and she sent us in for an ultrasound at about 1 month old. The ultrasound confirmed hydronephrosis in one kidney. So we were sent to a nephrologist, who sent us to a urologist. He got the vcug done ~5 months which showed no reflux. Then the mag3 renal scan at 1 y/o which showed no blockage. So fortunately no surgery was needed. We just continued with bi-annual ultrasounds and follow up, and have now graduated to yearly ultrasounds and follow up visits. We do, however, have to watch closely for UTIs so when he was younger we had to get a few urinalysis when he had fevers with no other nasal symptoms in case the fevers were from a UTI.
I can share more if you like. Everything was scary at first and I cried a lot, but he's a happy healthy kid now.

My father had this. He had 10 years of dialysis, a kidney transplant (which he kept for 20 years), and then died a few years ago of end stage renal disease. All in all, he lived a long and moderately healthy life. Modern medicine made that possible.

I'm really happy to hear that your husband has had an even better experience. It honestly brings a tear to my eye to hear that this issue is now fixable, and that people who suffer from it can go on to have healthy kidney function. My father would still be here today if that had been possible for him. I'm sorry to hear that your baby may face these issues too, but I'm so thrilled that medicine has progressed so far.

Thanks for all the feedback and for sharing your stories. I think the repeat US in 4 weeks will be most telling. If there's been a change in amniotic fluid, size of the bladder or any dilation of the ureters, then we are probably dealing with something different (and unknown). The unknown is much scarier for me than VUR. Sounds like while not ideal, it's quite manageable in the grand scheme of things.

My daughter had a normal anatomy scan but then the tech noticed her kidney was enlarged on an ultrasound when I was 37 weeks pregnant. The doctors told us she probably just wasn't emptying fully in utero but they would do an ultrasound after birth to confirm. Unfortunately the ultrasound at 4 days old showed a duplicated right kidney (with two ureters) and grade 5 vesiculoureteral reflux like your DH. She was put on a low-dose preventive antibiotic and now at 18 months, she's just monitored regularly by a urologist. Since she hasn't had any infections and her kidney is growing normally despite the swelling, our doctor plans to wait until she's 2-3 (ideally potty trained) to do surgery. It was very scary when she was first diagnosed, but besides taking the antibiotic every night before bed and needing a urine culture to rule out UTI whenever she gets a fever, it's really a non issue in her day to day life. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

I had the exact thing as your DH. I had a few surgeries around two and four years old. They had to do both sides. I do have recurring UTIs but only when I became sexually active so I don't know if it related.

No experience with it in a baby but I had that as a child. It led to recurrent UTIs. I was on low dose antibiotics for years while they waited to see if it would fix itself naturally. It didn't so I had surgery at 6. After that everything has been totally normal, no problems. How amazing that they can diagnose it before birth now. Good luck to you and your little one!

We just had our 20 week anatomy scan today, and for the most part things looked good with the exception of some renal abnormalities.

DH was born with what's called vesiculoureteral reflux and had to have surgery as a baby to reattach his ureters to his bladder. Based on today's scan, we think that may be what's going on with our first LO. She has dilated collecting systems, normal kidneys,, normal bladder, and normal amniotic fluid levels. We are being referred to the Pediatric Nephrologist (who DH and I both work with and adore), as well as a Pediatric Urologist (not even a part of our hospital). We'll be getting ultrasounds every 4 weeks now, with both the MFM and Nephrologists there at those appointments.

I feel like we have a plan, and I'm only slightly having alarm bells go off. I hope this is what DH had - as DH has normal kidney function as an adult. Does anyone have any experience with kidney issues in particular, or with getting a vague diagnosis like this and having to increase surveillance? I'm a little on edge, but thankful we both work in medicine and have easy access to specialists we need.

On a bright note, she cooperated for her photos today :)
