Like someone else said, I believe it's for class balance and just an understanding of where all the kids are. If your child is found to be behind in any of the areas they look at, they qualify for free services though the school district like free preschool, or having a speech therapist or occupational therapist meet with them during preschool.</p> <p>Most of the kids I know who get services are because of speech, (but I know one girl in my daughter's preschool class that gets a therapist that comes in and helps her with hand strength.) We are in a major west coast city and they make it very clear that every kid gets the same curriculum, and that there is no real difference between schools or classrooms. Interestingly, we didn't have any assessments at all, either at 3 or the spring/summer before K. I know there's an assessment before school begins, as well as a tour of the school for them, but I really don't know what to expect as my oldest son started in the fall of 2020 as the assessments, meet and greet with teachers, etc were cancelled due to covid. The assessment is to see if they should go to half day K1 or full day K2. (Here they go K1, K2, 1st grade, 2nd grade, etc) My older two went to K1…we didn’t even have them assessed—I love the half day program! Other than that, the assessment was easy. So exciting. I have an older child at the same school - and the school has a blog to keep everyone updated. There is a program our school does where you order all of the supplies online and they're shipped directly to the school for the first day. So you just go online to the site, enter the school code and the grade and DONE. I love it... They also print the list if you want to order yourself though.... I'm sure you'll hear as it gets closer. Like you, with my DD I was so stressed because I didn't have a supply list before kinder started. Turned out, I've never needed to buy any supplies - my daughter is going into 4th and her school provides everything (even scissors) every year! And, yes, it's public school. So, it totally depends on the school. In terms of lefties, my daughter is a lefty and all of the scissors for that age can be used interchangeably so I don't think there's anything specific you need. Just backpack, lunchbox (if she eats lunch at school -- our kinder is 1/2 day), and water bottle. Have fun! Because of Covid they supplied everything - DD just needed a backpack (big enough for a regular size folder), water bottle, lunch/snack bag, and masks. We haven't heard what is happening this year with supplies. </p> <p>When we were hybrid there was no rest time but when we switched to full time (for the last 6 weeks of school) they had 30 minutes of "down time." They could read, play with play dough, or rest. </p>
