@anniegurumi: are there any online communities specifically for American expats living in China? You would probably find mums on there who can help you with the chinese food issue, as they would have been through it too. I use the British expat forums for Canada all the time. You might be able to find a Korean expat doula in China, who could offer you email advice on the Korean food.......

I ate kimchi, gochujang and ssamjang while i was pregnant but not too much bc i wanted to limit the amount of msg i consumed. I dont know of any korean foods that are restricted except for fish like mackerel.

@anniegurumi: I totally understand. A risk from produce is cross contamination, so I do think if you wash thoroughly and peel what you can you will be ahead of the curve.

I do also understand that thought in the back of your mind...the what if I ate something that could harm my child.

@looch: She just said not to eat raw foods and deep water fish. She doesn't know Korean foods so she can't help me with that. Also there are so many different Chinese produce here that I don't even know where to begin in asking her. haha. But I'm sure I'll eventually figure it out.

I think I'm being more paranoid, I just want to be safe. :)

@anniegurumi: What did your OB say? Mine for example, told me to stay away from a particular kind of lettuce that is grown locally. I wouldn't have known if he didn't mention it specifically.

Also, can you find a midwife or doula that caters to the expat community?

@looch: That's definitely good advice. I think the problem is that I can't read or speak Chinese (I'm learning now). So I have no idea what is safe and what isn't as far as Chinese food. There is a huge Korean population here too so that's why I ask about some of the condiments.

I feel a bit overwhelmed being in another country (expat) and I tried googling things but I can't really find anything. And all the local foods, I don't recognize since it's mostly Chinese ingredients that I've never eaten. :(

I don't know about Asian food specifically, but I am big proponent of two things...local moms still eat their local food while pregnant in other parts of the world and you have to know your provider/seller. I ate everything, including sushi, while pregnant.

Hi all! I was doing a search to see if this topic already came up or not but I have no idea what I can and can't eat while pregnant for Asian foods.

For example:

In Korean food... is it ok to eat kimchi? How about gochujang (red pepper paste) or ssamjang (the sauce you eat with lettuce wraps?).

Chinese food: some of the ingredients that I don't recognize like snow fungus, lilly root, snow ear mushroom?

I live in China (but am Korean American) and I really don't know if I can eat the foods that I normally eat while pregnant. If anyone can help me out that would be GREAT! :)
