@Seattlemom: I didn't take any herbs. Last time I had to go on domperidone at 6 weeks, this time I haven't needed to. I'm really not sure why my output is different this time around! I started pumping around the same time, but maybe it's because I'm using a double pump?

@Freckles: so cool that your supply is better! Did you take any herbs or just start pumping earlier?

I had low supply issues with LO1, and things have been a lot better with LO2. We got off to a rocky start because he was a SUPER lazy/sleepy feeder (and he just didn't want to feed!). But i rented a hospital grade pump (my pump broke) and it's made a world of a difference. I can pump 5oz in 15 minutes, where with LO1 it took me multiple sessions (25 minutes+) to get the same output. I found that pumping as soon as my milk came in helped a lot.

@Seattlemom: I'll let you know in a few weeks!

Totally not trying the pumping thing, though, except maybe the day or two before my scheduled c-section. I think I'm nearly the only person in the world who does not want to go into labor early if the "inducing contractions" thing is true.

Following because we similarly had a rough go at nursing due to low supply. We're able to get through a year, but that was with tons of pumping and getting milk from friends who had oversupply. Hoping this time around it's better! I hadn't heard of pumping towards end of pregnancy, but in curious if anyone has tried it!

@Seattlemom: it was terrible. I would only pump 5--7 oz a day at work MAX. I weaned at 10 months to wcm because I was pregnant again anyway.

Seriously, I have about 100-200 oz in my freezer now!!! It's crazy.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: It is so stressful but was super duper important to me, as for lots of moms. My lo was a great nurser but I was constantly concerned about my supply. We ended up supplementing with formula at 6 months and exclusively to formula by 9 mo.

@illumina: yes I am hoping for a better experience next time too! I hope we both get that!

@matador84: wow your supply is crazy now? and was low with your first? That's so awesome. When I pumped at work with my lo the most I ever got was 9oz and that was from pumping 3 times and usually it was less then that.

A million times better. I pumped from about day 3 to relieve engorgement and started building a freezer stash. I pumped twice daily at work and get about 10 oz. with lo1, I was barely getting 5 and it was awful PLUS my DS refused formula. It was a nightmare. Dd has been completely ebf and she is 10 months. I would like to wean around 12-15 months but my supply is do crazy I don't really see an end in sight.

Ugh, BFinf my first was so stressful! We FF by the time she was 8 weeks but had ways supplemented.

Our second baby is almost 4 months and EBF. I take fenugreek and haven't noticed any supply issues, though I do obsess over supply since ihad so many problems the first time! We are doing so great though

It's amazing how different kids and experienced can be. I really don't know what is different this time. I didn't make any conscious changes.

This is a spin off from another post...if you had a low milk supply with your first baby, and you've had a second (or more), how was it the 2nd time around? Did you pump/hand express at then end of your pregnancy? Take any specific herbal supplements that helped?

I had a low milk supply with LO1 and am not preg again yet but it was so stressful, I'm thinking about what I can do to make it better the next time. I think I might have insufficient glandular tissue and have heard goats rue is a good herb to take but didn't know about it with LO1.

@swedishfish: I don't EP, but I do pump regularly. Those are the same ones I make and I love them! The Brewer's yeast is the magic ingredient. If you can tolerate it, the BY mixed in a smoothie (1-2 tbsp) literally makes me leak within an hour! I always take some of that when my supply seems like it needs help or if I need to pump to leave bottles if I'll be away.

I can't say it helped. I had chronic low supply issues, which medication might have helped if I had gone to the doctor sooner:(
But, I made them (a ton!) and they were very good. I froze half the bath and will eat with baby #2.

If you are a pumping mama did lactation cookies help your supply? I tried to make some today but I should probably follow the method and not just toss the ingredients in a bowl next time. They didn't turn out great.

ETA - but those that survived were still yummy! I used this recipe: http://www.bellybelly.com.au/breastfeeding/breastmilk-supply-increase-breastmilk-lactation-cookie-recipe#.UjYLF8u9KSP

@jessiejo17: Like I said, this makes a HUGE batch. My 5 qt bowl is full when I'm done.

Typically monster cookies are made in 1/4 cup portions (press the dough into a measuring cup and dump onto tray). So about 80 large cookies.

This time I scooped about 2 teaspoons of dough into my mini muffin pans so based off of calculations that would make about 400 plus mini muffin sized cookies.

This weekend I made a giant batch of cookies in my Kitchenaid mixer. This dough and the cookies freeze really well so I always save a lot for later!

I really modified a traditional monster cookie recipe which already has a lot of oatmeal but tried to add the benefits of a lactation cookie such as brewers yeast and flax. They taste really good. You can mix in any type of toppings including, nuts, chocolate chips, M&Ms, coconut, etc.

2 sticks (1 cup) of unsalted butter
3 cups of creamy peanut butter
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
4 eggs
Flax seed and brewers yeast (didn't measure just kinda dumped a few tbsp of each in)
vanilla
10 cups of oatmeal (not instant)
Raisins and Cranberries

I dropped these about a heaping teaspoon into my mini muffin pans and baked on 350 until just golden (they harden when the come out).
