@shopaholic: I had something very similar. Baby with white tongue but sharp shooting. Lac agreed probably not thrush. I did some vinegar wipe down of my breast and made sure to wash bras daily with vinegar to kill any potential yeast. Also used disposable nursing pads.

Thanks for all the responses! I went to the Free LC group session a local hospital had yesterday and the LC was super nice! She didn't think either of us has thrush, thought his tongue was typical milk scum! I'm so relieved! The random shooting pain - she wasn't too concerned.

I saw one and it cost me $140. I requested a reimbursement through my Health Savings Account, though.

I did attend a local Bf support group at the hospital, though (daytime mornings) and they have LCs that will take a look at you for no cost. It just didn't work for my schedule when I returned to work, which was when I was having issues.

Doesn't sound like you have any other symptoms for this, but my LOs white tongue was caused by his tongue tie. The LC who diagnosed him told me that if the nipple is being drawn back far enough into the mouth, the friction should clean the milk residue off the tongue. So my LOs incredibly shallow latch was the cause of the residue build up.

@charlotte: Oh! I have been pumping and it feels SO weird. I never really pumped consistently with LO1. Did you change your flange size bigger or smaller? Maybe I'll try that - though the random shooting pain seems to only be on one side.

@princessandthebee: Thanks for sharing! Yes, with LO1, the ped prescribed Nystatin and my OB prescribed Diflucan for me. We just never really figured out if LO really had it or not. I did have really painful shooting pains and cracked nipples with LO1, which I was sure was thrush. This time I don't have any of that, just a random shooting pain in one breast when I'm not feeding. I used GSE last time, but never the Gentian Violet. I didn't realize that helped with pain? The latch thing is what I think LC's tend to focus and fixate on as well, and I'm sure that's not our issue.

@creativemomma15: Thank you! Our hospital has a phone in line too, but they always suggest you go in during their limited hours for a consult. The cleaning solution sounds similar to what I did with the GSE - better bust that out again.

@Freckles: @lamariniere: Exactly my fear of getting "diagnosed" with thrush again, only for it to be milk scum. And go through all the rigorous treatment, cleaning, sterilizing (laundry, everything!) It was so much work to never have anything conclusive at the end.

The LC also thought it was thrush with LO1 but it was just milk scum and the fact that her latch was shallow and causing my nipple pain. I would get a second opinion!

LO always had a white tongue when she was little and I was convinced it was thrush for awhile. It was actually a tongue and lip tie that was causing the pain.

Our hospital offers phone call support with their lactation consultant. I called a few times for advice and once they recommended me coming in for help. On another note, I had a similar experience with a deep shooting pain with my DS. The LC gave me tips over the phone to help. I don't remember if she called it thrush exactly (baby brain!) but she recommended making a vinegar solution with 1 tbsp white vinegar and 1 cup water and then "wash" my nipples with that using cotton balls to help. DS did have a bad diaper rash at the time too that he was prescribed nystatin ointment for and the LC said I could use that on my nipples as well after a feeding. Doing those things helped and solved the problem for us. I hope you feel better soon! I remember being in tears sometimes from the pain before I knew what it was!

I suffered from thrush for months with my son. His yeast mostly showed up on the insides of his cheeks. If you can't scrape it off, it's yeast, if you can, it's milk residue.

If your nipples are burning or stinging or in sharp pain during and after nursing, it's likely thrush. We had to get multiple medications to get rid of ours. They prescribed nystatin first which did nothing, and then diflucan/fluconazole which got rid of DS's yeast!
For my pain the only thing that worked was using Gentian Violet. It's a purple dye that will stain EVERYTHING but it slowly eliminated my pain. It suffocates the yeast on your nipples.

In regards to an LC, they could probably diagnose you but I found friends with experience to be more helpful. When the antibiotics didn't help with the pain, the LC couldn't do much for me besides suggesting looking at our latch again. That's why I had to seek out alternative solutions.

Good luck! Thrush is persistent and awful but I'm hoping that it's not what you have!

I freaked myself out last week thinking I might have thrush because my LO had the white tongue and I was having shooting pain. I changed flange sizes for pumping and the pain went away. And the tongue appears to just be milk! Don't know if you are pumping at all but if so check that you aren't hurting yourself!

@shopaholic: I think it is definitely worth talking to an LC! I haven't had thrush but I attend a breastfeeding support group and the LCs who run it had a lot to say when someone brought it up.

As far as cost, the LC I saw was $85 initially and $60 for a follow up. I am in the process of requesting reimbursement from insurance and it looks promising so that is something to ask about too. Good luck!

Have you ever seen a Lactation Consultant? If so, how much does a visit usually costs?

I was sort of diagnosed with Thrush with LO1 and spent months and $$$ trying to get rid of it. I had painfully cracked nipples and LO had a white coating only on the back of her tongue. Finally after MONTHS the Ped said he really wasn't sure it was Thrush after all since the tongue thing didn't really change. My OB didn't domuch beside prescribe some APNO and I think I did a round of antibiotics?

I'm seeing similar white coating on the tongue on baby #2 and an occasional sharp shooting pain in one breast (Dr. Google suggests Thrush), but no cracked nipples or any other symptoms. Baby seems to have a good latch, feeds often, no other issues, but I don't know who else to see if it is indeed Thrush. My GF told me her baby had a white tongue coating too, and she just wiped it clean all the time, "brushing" his tongue with a wet washcloth. Neither was diagnosed with Thrush.

Has anyone seen a LC for something like this? I'm thinking a LC would know more than our Ped or my OB? Right now my main concern is the deep shooting sharp pain in the breast, but no other issues.
