@shopaholic: sorry to bump this old thread! Curious if probiotics did end up preventing eczema for baby? I didn't take them with #1 and he has terrible food allergies and eczema. Definitely wanting to try them to prevent the same problems in #2!

@pelikila: We just recently switched soaps and noticed a marked improvement too! We used to use the aveeno eczema line, because we thought it was sensitive enough. But it didn't help his eczema (didnt' make it worse either though). I just recently switched to Dr. Bronner's Baby soap and his eczema has improved quite a bit. We dilute it with water and put it in a foam soap dispenser. It's not completely gone. But it's much better!

@me0wmeeh: Dove daily moisture shampoo and conditioners and Dove deep moisture body wash or unscented bar soap. I totally understand the bath store / drug store feeling. We were that way too.

@pelikila: What kind of shampoo do you use? We started using Dove per our pediatrician too and it helped a lot. She also recommended Head and Shoulders but it's flaring up his scalp. So, I stopped using it. I feel like I can open my own bath store, I have everything from Mustela to CA Baby to now drugs store items.

@me0wmeeh: Our pediatrician prescribed it the first time my son got an ear infection, which was around 4 months. That young he recommended only 1 packet per day. At about 1 year old his pediatrician suggested we up it to one packet twice a day.

ETA: Also, my son's eczema got much better when we stopped using baby soaps and shampoos (even the ones for sensitive skin and eczema) and switched to unscented dove soap and shampoo. I just thought I'd mention that because I was surprised at the difference.

@shopaholic: My son was EBF until 8.5 months old. I am a WOHM though so at daycare he gets bottles. I sent boxes of the Florastor kids and asked them to put one packet in his first bottle of the morning after they warmed it up. If you feed your LO one bottle then I'd just add the probiotics to that one bottle.

@banana: Hopefully! I will do it for sure just to try and prevent baby from having eczema. It's pretty terrible and my cousin's baby suffered awfully with it the first year!

@BoogieBea: Ooh! That's a good tip! Powder and just put it on your finger!

@runsyellowlites: Yes, I hear it's good for all sorts of things!

@pelikila: So you just put it in a bottle? Did you BF and use it ever?

There are some that are made just for kids. We have been using Florastor Kids because it is the only one that we've found that can be put in hot liquids (like a warmed bottle). It is the same as the regular Florastor you can find in most grocery or drug stores but it comes in a packet instead of a capsule. Also, the capsule is easy to take apart and dump into a bottle or cup we've found out.

P is 7 months and gets coconut milk yogurt that has probiotics everyday, or just about every day. She has a dairy & soy intolerance which made it incredibly hard to find a probiotic for her & the only one I found was pretty pricey & was for adults so I wasn't really sure HOW to give it to her. I have noticed that her poop is ALOT more "normal" since starting the yogurt though, which is nice with all the issues we've had.

They sell probiotics for babies. I gave my daughter some to help her with her digestive system since she has chronic constipation. I believe the one I picked up was in powder form. I just used my finger to put it in her mouth. It's been a while so I don't remember the details.

I was reading my Fit Pregnancy magazine today and in Dr. Andrew Weil's Q & A section, there was an interesting part concerning pregnant women taking probiotics. It stated, "studies show that where there is a significant family history of allergy or eczema, babies whose mothers take a probiotic supplement with a specific strain (Lactobacillus GG) during the last trimester of pregnancy, and who receive the same probiotic through the first six months of life, are at markedly reduced risk of developing eczema during childhood."

Now as someone who has had terrible eczema since I was born (and terrible allergies), history of both all the way through extended relatives, I found this to be seriously interesting!
I was used to taking probiotics prior to pregnancy and went out and got some more after reading this. I'm confused a bit about the giving it to the baby though. Where do they sell it and how do you give it to the baby? Liquid dropper? Anyone actually give their LOs probiotics everyday?
