@Thehistoryofus: Yeah, I understand that different people have different practice styles, but that's pretty far outside the standard of care. I hope you are following up with your pediatrician :)

@Mrs. Jacks: the other reason they wanted her on antibiotics was to help if she got a UTI. I wasn't giving her an antibiotic though when she already had an upset belly for an issue she didn't have yet. It was an ER doctor.

Yes, and antibiotics are not recommended for either of those bacterial infections because they prolong the shedding of the bacteria and don't shorten the duration of symptoms. These docs should definitely have known that!

When we were in the hospital this weekend with a dehydrated baby we got the diagnosis that she tested positive for rotavirus. They also did a lactoferrin stool sample test which came out positive meaning she also had a bacterial infection like e coli or salmonella. We were prescribed an antibiotic. When we got home we thought how odd that she would get a bad viral and bacterial infection at the same time. A quick good search showed that the lactoferrin test will always be positive in breastfed babies. We called back to the ER and sure enough the test is no good and she doesn't need the antibiotics.
