I went to my doctor for fatigue and possible depression. When I described my digestive symptoms (which I'd been ignoring/blaming on whatever), she ddi blood testing which came back positive for celiac. I did an endoscopy to confirm.
Food sensitivity blood tests are not really supported by a lot of evidence. If celiac is ruled out, I"d consider speaking with a good nutritionist. I work with one in a professional capacity who helps people figure out dietary solutions for their IBS all of the time. She's great!

@josina: The best way to know for sure is an elimination diet. If you want to DIY you can do a Whole30 - tons of resources online. If you want professional guidance I’ll wall you the info of who we use. (From personal experience a gut healing diet will clear up all intolerances- but it takes some time).

Took the lactose/glucose/fructose tests last week and this week. I failed the fructose test, passed glucose, and I believe passed lactose although haven't gotten the official from the dr yet.

So if anyone is fructose intolerance give me all the tips?! Any great resources out there? I'm quitting the obvious, sweets, most fruit, pasta sauces, ketchup  , bbq sauce  soda, but some things still sneak up on me (texas toast) so I'm got a lot of learning to do. My insurance doesn't cover a dietician.

Well, looks like I will mostly be diagnosing myself... I am leaning towards a lactose intolerance, maybe fructose, but can't get in to do Dr. to do the testing until August.

I've been adding gluten back to my diet and so far so good.

Ideally this is all just because of the virus and will go back to normal in a few months. The dr. did say it was a possibility.

Hmmm, same thing here. Have you been tested for Covid? I’ve had digestive issues, too, since being sick with a virus in Feb. I do wonder if I had Covid since it also causes digestive issues. I’d be curious to get the antibodies test soon. I don’t have any food intolerances that I know of. It’s definitely more of a recent issue since I was sick in Feb.

I've tried a low FODMAP diet for IBS symptoms. Works amazingly well but it's almost impossible to follow. I wish I had time to try it again and play around with it, though. I usually look like I'm 5 months pregnant due to bloating and have horrible gas all the time. The diet made it disappear.

I have a weird story because I have celiac disease but without any digestive symptoms. I was diagnosed because of a wonderful doctor who pushed for testing for Celiac after I broke my pelvis and foot within 6 weeks of each other. As it turns out, I have silent celiac which caused osteoporosis. The celiac was diagnosed with a blood test followed by an endoscopy (technically you have to have both in order to be confirmed positive).

The diet change hasn't been terrible. The first two months were very hard emotionally, but I'm very used to it now, almost 5 months in. I'm also a vegetarian, about 85% vegan, so I'm quite limited in what I can eat, but it's not been that bad! There are some awesome whole food cookbooks that I've enjoyed cooking through, and I despise cooking.

I've done a blood test twice. The first time was about 10 years ago and it showed strong sensitivities to soy and gluten. I used to break out into hives when I ate soy and I linked my severe bloating to gluten. It all went away once I got pregnant. But started to come back about 6 months ago. I took another blood test and tested negative for just about everything. I don't break out into hives when I eat soy but only eat it sparingly. I do get severe bloating and other digestive issues so I cut out gluten again and feel much better. I tend to cheat here and there with varying side effects. I don't have celiac. But elimination was what worked for me.

@Becky: Bummer about having celiac but glad the switch was easy for you. I did get tested for that (negative) but haven't ruled out an intolerance yet.

I went on a 4 week no dairy, no gluten (although I cheated with a cookie here and there) and was doing way better. Added dairy back in to a definite affect on Saturday but then just read back through my dr. report and I was also supposed to cut fructose - I had watermelon in between the ice cream and feta cheese so it could've just as easily been that, dangit.
And I'm trying to figure this all out before my appt. on Friday, lol.

Celiac runs in my family so I planned to do a one month elimination trial, then eat it again for a week and get tested (since you need to have it in your system). I felt so much better I decided not to do the test because I didn’t want to go through eating it again. Kind of a unique situation though since most women in my family have gotten an official positive on the test so I was able to assume. The switch was easy since my mom was diagnosed when I was 10, so I knew what I could/couldnt eat and what to watch out for.

@BananaPancakes: in my regular grocery stores, a lot of the "gluten free" items are also major-allergen free, so they are dairy free as well. LO doesn't eat a lot of that stuff (because it's like cookies or crackers) but I ate plenty when she was still on breastmilk!

Ice cream and stuff, I just don't give it. She's had a popsicle like, once in her life so as she gets older if she starts to notice what she's missing, I might just offer fruit popsicles instead.

@BananaPancakes: I hear you. Until recently, we didn't have a local Whole Foods either, so I had to go to a small organic/healthy store in town that was tiny. But it DID have some decent dairy-free options. Did you try looking for dairy-free options at your grocery store? I suspect there are probably less "lactose-free" options than there are "dairy-free" options, so you might have better luck just going dairy-free on certain items (like yogurt and cheese).

@Adira: I'm going to the only health food place in town this afternoon because I know they have a big lactose/dairy free section. The closest Whole Foods is like 90 minutes away. I could only find 1 lactose free yogurt at the regular grocery store this morning, so I'm hoping to get some good stuff at the health store. I'm in a smallish town, so there's very little offered in the "specialty" sections.
@Anagram: Thanks! I hope these changes will do him some good. I think a lot of his food aversions might stem from not feeling well after eating much of the time. Hopefully getting him off lactose and onto a reflux reducer is going to turn things around!

@BananaPancakes: My LO is totally dairy free (not just lactose free), but we still find plenty for her to eat. She doesn't eat cheese, butter, or cow's milk at all, and honestly we stay away from the other yogurts too just because of the sugar in them (she doesn't like the totally plain ones).

She drinks hemp milk and I use almond milk for baking (to make pancakes or whatever). And we buy the Earth Balance dairy-and-soy free spread for "butter", but I tend to cook with Canola or Olive oil anyway.

Xander's not lactose intolerant, but he's allergic to dairy, so we had to go dairy-free for him. He drinks hemp milk (Tempt brand) and eats lots of almond and coconut yogurt (So Delicious). I just read labels and make sure things don't contain milk! Go Veggie has a lactose-free cheese (as well as a dairy-free one) that might be good. American Flatbread company makes a Vegan cheese pizza that's delicious. We use Earth Balance vegan butter as well. And then he eats a lot of fruits, veggies (well, not a lot of veggies...), breads, crackers, chicken, and sausage. And you can find dairy-free cookies and stuff, especially at places like Whole Foods. And I have a delicious chocolate cake recipe that I've adapted to be dairy-free that is super moist and yummy if you're interested.

ETA: Earth's Best makes mini waffles that are dairy-free! Xander LOVES them.

@BananaPancakes: lactose free doesn't mean dairy free necessarily but if it specifically says lactose free I would think its ok. I didn't realize things like regular pancake mix, frozen pncakes/waffles, basically all of those single frozen meals, lots of breads (but not most bagels and English muffins!), pastries...they all have milk/lactose. I'm still learning and I think a lot is unfortunately trial and error especially since I only thought to avoid the obvious ones and that didn't work. :/ Hoping it goes smoothly for you. I bet at this point you'll gladly do whatever it takes to help your son, GI issues are difficult.

@autumnlove: I just bought some lactose-free milk this morning, but we haven't tried it. Good to know about using it to make ice cream!

@2littlepumpkins: His GI specialist gave us a sheet with the milk words to avoid, and in just the 3 days since we found out, we've realized practically all of his snacks have milk in them. And good to know about butter...I was trying to research if that was ok this morning because I wasn't sure if lactose-free meant dairy-free. It seemed like it depends on the person, but for now, we're going to eliminate pretty heavily because he's really been having a hard time with GI stuff lately.

@danda: His specialist didn't mention a pill, so I'm assuming he's not old enough or it's not as effective in kids? But good to know for the future. She said you usually don't grow out of it and that it typically gets worse as you get older. Bleh.

I'm mildly lactose intolerant. There's Lactaid milk, cottage cheese, and ice cream out there...and if kiddo is old enough a Lactaid pill contains the lactase enzyme and allows just about anything to be consumed. Butter and certain cheeses typically have very low amounts so they might be ok...definitely look up levels of lactose on Google and find a trustworthy chart.
