Just as a follow-up, one year later D is ahead of the language curve. He speaks in long sentences, uses new words every day... He started on the later side, but hit the ground running.

We're going through the EI process right now for speech. I put it off for a really long time and took a wait and see approach. I finally called for info and ended up scheduling a meeting. The process has been great so far. It's a relief to know one way or the other if something is wrong. So my advice is to go with your instincts. If you think he might be delayed, call for an eval. It's pretty easy and in our town they came to our house. Definitely worth the peace of mind for me.

@Mrs Green Grass: oh i just saw you posted that above. That is great! It also probably makes sense for a preemie like he is to be a bit later to the game with some of this stuff. He sounds like he is covered and doing great.

@Mrs. Twine: thanks <3
@MrsMccarthy: just read your follow-up post...glad it went well! Dylan gets followed by a high-risk clinic no matter what since he was born so young and it's all covered.

I second Mrs. Twine in feeling that he sounds like he is on track and he is still so young but EI is free, they do a lot of follow up and can be very helpful in getting more out of him or keeping an eye on his progress as they are doing with my son. In my sons case its more about attention and language is normal but he was around where your son is now when he was your sons age and a lot of language started coming in between 15 and 18 months. He sounds like a wonderful boy. good luck!

@Mrs Green Grass: I think language is really easy to feel worried about, but it also most often turns out well. I know your home is language rich and he is exposed to what he needs to be in order to do really well later on. And since he'll have the evaluation anyway, if he needs any additional services he'll get them. I'm pretty confident that before too terribly long you'll be able to look back and wish you could have told yourself that you didn't have to worry. <3

I'm pretty sure DS was about that point at 12 months. I thought he was behind because we were in playgroup with some kids that were more advanced (for example pointing at and saying "bubble"). The doctor has not been concerned and he is definitely learning new things every day. Because of this I am not worrying about it. At 18 months he is pointing at everything and saying "What's that?" ALL DAY LONG. He also has finally started waving consistently. He could do it before but it was sporadic or only after people walked away. I think language development is often a bit slower for boys, especially if they develop other areas early. If his doctor is not worried and he is on track with everything else I would try not to stress about it.

I think with Ellie it was the fact that she wasn't making any noises at all, really, speech or non-speech related. So other than crying and the one or so word she had, she was just silent other than grunting. Being able to make a wide variety of sounds is encouraging. Also, she had a huge gap between receptive and expressive language. I think it's usually less worrisome when there's less variance.
@swurlygurl: Ellie is very much an observer, too. When she finally did do anything we were worried about, she did it in a big way. It can be really fun to watch.

@Mrs. Twine: we are already followed by the high-risk clinic since he was a 25-weeker so we will be evaluated in April no matter what which is good. I just needed to hear some stories today! I agree about the whole development. The only part that stops me is that I call him really physical, but he's still not walking...but he climbs, goes in and out of the doggie door face/first (whoops), can stand up without his hands etc...

Thanks for all of the stories so far!

That sounds pretty close to L! She's 14 months, and zero words. I think she tries to mimic 'uh oh' and 'hello' sometimes, but it's not consistent.
She doesn't have a ton of vowels that she uses, mostly 'dadadada' (but not in reference to DH) and 'vvvvv'.
She'll point sometimes, but not like she's asking me for something. It's like she's just doing it for fun, she'll walk around pointing
No head shaking
Comprehension of "No' and 'Bye Bye' is slim, but it looks to be slowly improving

I'd say just in the last couple weeks has she even been understanding of commands/statements (where's your lion, bring Mommy your socks, Daddy's home, etc), and it's only with words she's VERY familiar with, that we work with her a lot on.

I was kind of worried for a while, but she's an observer (Fringe anyone?? Haha :) ), so she likes to watch and have a really good grasp on things before she does them herself (walking, crawling, sitting, etc)

My pediatrician says she doesn't worry unless the kid isn't consistently saying 5 words by 18 months. Of course, our ped's office seems really laid back so your mileage may vary. Our LO is 17 months and isn't up to saying 5 words yet.

He sounds like he is on-track, but maybe on the lower end of normal. I know parents and caregivers are also often encouraged to look at development on the whole. So if your child is very physical, it's also likely that they have been focusing more energy on that, and so language might not be as advanced for age. What does your pediatrician say? I always feel that if you have concerns it is a great idea to go through EI. If they find something of note, you can start getting services which often make a very significant difference. If nothing is wrong, you have the peace of mind of knowing that someone who is trained to look for developmental delays has given a thorough assessment and sees no cause for concern. Ellie was very delayed in speech (had only mama and up at her first year appointment, and had only three words at 18 months (and then regressed to only one) and then by age three was on track). Now she has an amazing vocabulary. She didn't get any services. I think *I* would have felt better after an evaluation, though. I was really concerned for a long time.

DD is 15.5 months, and she's at almost exactly the same place. Her ped suggested we have her evaluated just to make sure, even though her receptive communication is strong. I'd ask your doctor and follow your gut. From what I've read, plenty of kiddos still aren't talking at their ages, but if you're worried, seek out early intervention in your area! Our first meeting is tomorrow.

Dylan is 14 months adjusted (17 1/2 actual, but we typically go by his adjusted age). He seems basically on track for everything, not walking yet, but close, good fine and gross motor, but I'm just not quite sure about language.

Here's what I found on BBC about warning signs for language.
By 12 months:
Doesn't say "mama" or "dada"
Doesn't use gestures such as waving, shaking her head, or pointing
Doesn't practice using at least a couple of consonants (like p or b, for example)
Doesn't understand and respond to words such as "no" and "bye-bye"
Isn't pointing out things of interest such as a bird or airplane overhead
Doesn't say single words Between 12 and 15 months
Doesn't babble as if talking

Dylan says "dada" all the time, but doesn't really say it to DH. He has said "mama" before, but I haven't heard it in months and months although the nanny has. He's never said it to me. He's said "da" and "dag" for dog and I'm pretty sure he's said "ca" for car and a version of turtle (He loves his Twilight Turtle). But he very inconsistently says these words to the object.

He occasionally shakes his head, but does not point and I've never seen him wave although the nanny has.

He babbles like crazy with all kinds of vowels and consonants. It sounds like a full-on alien language.

He definitely responds to all kinds of words including no, so receptive language seems okay.

What do you think?
