I have a late walker...he is 15 months old and fits a lot of the descriptions I'm seeing here - stubborn, cautious, won't allow us to help him practice (collapses to his knees if we try), hates push toys, etc. He is in EI (early intervention) and as far as the walking goes they see no reason for him to physically be unable to do it, he bears weight/pulls up/cruises just fine...he just doesn't want to walk. And none of their tricks/tips/tools are working. I'm having a tough time being chill about it because I'm 7 months pregnant and completely terrified at the thought of caring for a newborn (particularly if I need a repeat c-section) while having a 17 month old that still won't walk! But from what you ladies are saying, it doesn't sound like there's much I can do about it other than wait. And of course he's also in the 90th percentile for weight, so he's getting pretty heavy for me to carry around all the time!

@jaguar: Yep another late walker here. Update is DD started walking at just over 18 months. She would also "crumble" to the floor if we tried to help but she got the hang of it! There was month of she would only walk if we held her hand, otherwise she would fall to the floor.

@jaguar: I was going to update! He didn't walk by 18 months, but he did walk within 18! It was about 18 and two weeks and he went really quickly from a few steps to 40% walking to like 100%. And it is so exciting!!! Changing our life.

Dylan would not accept help until he really wanted to walk and standing him against a wall didn't work either. Eventually he let us practice with him but like at 17 months. I bet Georgia will be the same!

I'm glad you wrote this post. Georgia is nearly 17 months old and still no walking. The latest thing she's doing it (very occasionally) standing without assistance, but it's all her own choosing. If we try to help her 'walk', she crumples. Stubborn! ;)

@Mrs Green Grass: My son (now almost 35 and brilliant attorney) was 22 months when he was willing to let go and start walking alone - he cruised around on furniture for a long time. He was diagnosed with "benign hypotonia" but runs, rides a bike, plays tennis etc. as any adult - was never gonna be a professional athlete - but that's fine.... now I have a 14 month old grandson - we are all worried again - he was month premature and is creeping around - rapidly all over the floor but will not pull up at all and does not actually crawl on all fours. (He did have club foot at birth and was a month early and is in braces at night - that has been corrected but that is not supposed to delay walking). Would like to hear other stories. Wonder if my grandson could have inherited the late walking thing also (my son is his uncle and my daughter is a track and field coach and very althletic - she is the mom). Appreciate other stories. thanks.

@rattles: He is very well followed by Ped (every 3 months) and a high risk follow up clinic since he's a 25 weeker. He was in OT until about 12 months, but was doing so well that she "graduated" us. I'm pretty sure she won't be worried, but I will definitely know this afternoon.

T walked at 14.5 months but never took practice steps alone or really stood alone. He just started walking clear across the room one day. And within a week never crawled again. The good news is that since he waited until he was really steady we never had accidents or spills.

My DD took her first steps at 16.5 months and didn't start walking as her regular mode of transit for another 2-3 weeks after that. Now at almost 18 months, she can almost run and only crawls when needed (tunnels and playgrounds). She was never late on her other gross milestones - she sat at 6 months, crawled at 8 months and cruised at 12 months. She just wasn't interested at all in walking, it seemed! She'd climb stairs or walk holding our fingers, but she'd avoid all push toys and would drop to crawling if we tried to let go of her fingers. We had her checked out by EI physical therapists who agreed she was just taking her time, and sure enough, she's just fine! If your docs aren't worried, I'd try not to be either. If you're worried and stressed and haven't had anyone take a look at him, I'd do that for your own peace of mind. Hopefully though, he's just waiting until he can run!

@Mrs Green Grass: D is also slow with the walking. Daycare sent a card home yesterday that he took a few independent steps, but Hubs and I have yet to see it. He's 16+ months. It's unnerving, and seeing all the younger babies who are already walking has been really hard for me - a couple of times I've actually considered shutting down my IG for a while because it was really stressing me out and making me sad. But I think that it'll be just like pps have said - one day he'll totally surprise me and just - BAM - walk! But in the meantime, I am right there with you.

I don't post here often but I wanted to log-in specifically to comment on this post. My son JUST took his first steps this past weekend at 18 months, 20 days old. He was also a late crawler, waiting until 11 months old to do that. He still does not really stand without holding on to something (so he can't balance and stand, but he can stand holding onto furniture, etc.), but he is doing SO well with the walking just in the last few days.

Were you or your husband late walkers? Our pediatrician said it can often run in families. My husband didn't walk until he was 20 months old, so when we noticed M was slow on gross motor skills, we expected this would be the case all along.

Hang in there! It's easy to worry but your LO WILL walk soon!

DH didn't walk until after 16 months! He's running now, at 18. He never crawled, either, just butt scooted. He didn't pull up on things to stand up until the week before his absolute must-do-it-by-today-or-you-get-PT date. He just does his own thing at his own pace.

We are just a shy of 17 months and LO took her first unassisted steps last monday (more like a little shuffle of the feet, but I will take it!) She does love push toys, but won't hold our hands to walk. She is so stubborn. Totally understand the worry!! I have been thinking of going back to the ped for her language development though, I think we should maybe look into help. We have maybe one word, mama? I question if it counts cause she keeps saying it, mamamamama... but I think she knows it is me and she says it to me to get my attention. Her receptive language is amazing but expressive is pretty much nonexistent.

My son would carry his push toys around the house, but he wouldn't walk without it until he was 15 months. The only thing that bothered me were the comments. People made it seem like his rickets were the issue, and felt the need to point it out every time they saw us.

@CupQuakeWalk: thanks! I read through it!

It's kind of interesting to read how many lo's are shy or cautious because that is not D at all! He's a little daredevil. He just does not want to do it! But it's helpful just to know other people were in the same place. I'm going to ped tmrw for a regular weight check and I'm not even really concerned about asking about the walking, but I will...but I'm worried about a language (expressive) delay too.

On a side note... there is this Chinese saying that says that it's better to be late walker because that means you will be a "boss" instead of a "worker". Aka you will command people to do work instead of being the one does the manual work.

Which means that person will have a better future because there are a lot of good qualities related to being a leader.

Again not sure how true this or if it even is a Chinese motto because my mom told me this and she tends to make things up. :D

My LO walked at 14.5 months but he was so much like the babies described above. He's just a super cautious kid. He never did the drunken wobbles, wasn't interested in push toys (well, he did like the RadioFlyer wagon), and he was a super fast and efficient crawler. When he did decide to walk, he walked 10 feet the first time. The next day he walked across our house. He has always been the type of kid to build his confidence and wait until he was able to do something 100%.

Ellie pretty much refused to put weight on her legs, period. Was much happier watching than doing. She NEVER cruised along furniture. She was walking at 16 months and it came out of nowhere. She just started doing it. And she hardly ever fell. She's still not the most physical kid ever, but she can do most of what her peers can. Everything you wrote about what he can do right now sounds really encouraging and like it's just a matter of time.

My close friends daughter didn't walk until she was almost 17 months old. Now she is running around everywhere! :)
