Hi ladies,

Just an update, I had a very positive meeting with my boss where I brought this up and she encouraged me to take the time, just said she wished I'd prompted her earlier because she meant to follow up!

@Adira: it's tempting, but old boss isn't gone until mid-month which would be late to give notice of vacation :)

@Bluebonnet: Yep, she's still here and I think that's what I'll do while she still is. I will plan out how I present it, but I really need to have that conversation with her to start I think.

Everyone's thoughts on this are so helpful! A couple of jobs ago I had a very bad experience with my entire team being let go one by one because of internal politics. It's made me anxious about asking for things, and then this being a much more challenging situation with my boss departing.

The anxious part of me worries about things like getting fired because of such a request, and the level-headed part remembers that we have a couple of weeks before our finance team even closes the books. It's a see-saw, spurred by all the uncertainty.

Thanks, I am hoping the same. Old boss is still here through mid-month and I don't think interim boss will be managing admin side of things.

I think I might approach old boss first, framing it that way in terms of availability. Really hoping our super demanding VP doesn't have to be involved.

The whole situation makes finding a new job/SAHM some combo seem more appealing, since this high stress nonprofit job doesn't feel worth it. But I also love the topic area.

@hoogirl05: Yeah that's hard since it was never previously approved or even acknowledged by your old boss. So it's essentially a brand new request. I wouldn't frame it as something that was previously approved since it wasn't, and they very well may confirm that with your former boss. I would tell whoever is acting in that roll that you sent in a request and hadn't received a response (which was somewhat typical of your old boss) and you were never able to follow up with her due to all the turmoil at the office and at home. Acknowledge that it's a difficult time of year, but it's an important trip for your family, and ask how you can make things work.

Has your former boss left? Or is she finishing her two weeks notice?

If she's still there, I'd start with her and get her perspective on how to approach.

Historically, has someone "approved" your vacation? At my company you let your boss know when you are taking time off (nothing is approved per se).

If she's not there, I'd go to your new boss and explain that you have this vacation planned and the re

So the request was never officially (in email) cleared with your old boss, right? As in, there's nothing in a calendar that your new boss will see as already approved?

I would speak to whomever is filling in for her, and frame it as "Former boss and I agreed on the leave (which it sounds like you had), but had not yet discussed the best way to make it work. I went ahead and made travel plans, but I'm open to <being available by email/phone, working x hours per day or x days of the vacation> because I understand this is a busy time." Perhaps offer ways to make yourself extra-available in the previous week so that everything can be wrapped up for the fiscal year close.

Good luck! Fingers crossed for you it's not nearly as tricky/confrontational as you expect!

No, that's one of the frustrating things, I went back and looked and she did not respond. Though she often does not respond to these requests, so I either just reminder has a day off approaches, or for more than a couple of days, I have to reminder her a couple of times and speak with her.

We do have a vacation tracking system, our timesheet system since our researchers charge hours to projects. And I do need to "burn" a couple of days of leave that I'm not allowed to carry over into the next fiscal year.

I would love some outside perspectives on my current situation at work. As context, I work as a fundraiser at a research/academic organization in a major city. Our fiscal year ends 6/30 and it's always a busy time of year.

We see my husband's father and stepmother infrequently in person (keep in touch via email and text) because of distance and his father's demanding schedule at work. They love our 2 kids (ages 1 and 3) though and invite us once a year to their beach house. This year they offered June 24-30, and my husband accepted after quickly checking with me, as this year in particular would be special since that time would also align with his brother's time with them following his college graduation (before he starts his "real" world job a week or two later).

I sent a request to my boss, intending to discuss with her later. Several busy weeks later, including a nightmare few where my son can't be off antibiotics without getting an ear infection, doesn't sleep, and gets tubes, and she announces she is leaving. We now have a former colleague who has been brought on to help us finish out our year with fundraising.

I'm not in a tricky situation, as this time with family is of great significance to my husband and in-laws, but am almost afraid to bring up the leave request since the end of year might be even busier with staff transitions. I'm not even sure who to bring it up to, but most of all, I'm not sure the best way to address it. I'm more than willing to work remotely, but feel like I need to arm myself with a "case" to whoever I need to talk to.

In a brief conversation with my husband, I did bring it up, but he works with a bigger team than the much leaner one that I do, so has more backup.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated! I feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place, to say the least.
