I never felt let down in the beginning too and then I did but I don't remember how DS was. I get that tingling feeling of let down every once in awhile and it only lasts a few seconds. When it does happen, I know I'm most likely going to leak out of the other boob.

Yup, me too! Right around the same time frame! It doesn't hurt badly enough to bother doing anything about it but it is a little uncomfortable for a few moments...I don't mind it tho bc I'm always happy that it means there's milk in ma boobies!

For me, this turned out to be totally normal. I could never feel let down until about a month in, but then I also started getting the stabbing/tingling feeling with let down. It only ever lasted for a few seconds for me.

LO is about 4 weeks old and we breastfeed except for one nighttime formula session. I've never noticed the letdown before; the milk just started flowing and that was that.

The last few days though, I've noticed when she starts feeding on one side, the other side gets these stabbing sort of pains in my nipple. (it hurts for a bit on the side she's feeding, but not as bad) They go away after a little bit, but it's just nothing I've experienced before. I haven't seen any sign of thrush, so I was wondering if anyone else went from a painless letdown to a painful one, or if there is something I should be doing to minimize the pain!

Maybe a minute? My goal is always to be able to hit the letdown button before it automatically switches at 2 minutes. And I feel like a failure if I haven't let down by then and have to press the button for more time. :)

Don't get me wrong - I can still pump the majority of the time but there are occasions that only 0.5-1 oz comes out when it should have been 4-5.....

Thanks all ! it only started happening around the 5.5 month mark and now my boobs' letdown is not very dependable. Sometimes with the pump I just don't have that "ouch my boobs are hurting milk is coming through now" feeling, especially when the pumping session is "off schedule".

@Coco Bee: I wouldn't want to wean too IF LO is not going through nursing strikes on and off ... He's going through a fresh round now, I am not sure if it is completely because of teething or we've introduced faster flowing nipples a few weeks ago.

Nowadays I am almost afraid to feed him or take care of him on my own because I don't know when he'd go strike again, and when I am alone things can get hairy... especially when pumping doesn't retrieve milk. It makes it not fun anymore and I just want to enjoy my time with him.

@lemondrop: @banana: Thanks for the tip - and no that is not TMI at all!

@Goldilocks1107: I tried that but it doesn't really work...

@Thehistoryofus: Yes I do keep it on the faster setting for 2 mins. sometimes dribbles come out and the whole session I would have gotten 1 oz....

I tried hand expressing then put the pump back - doesn't work either....

Do you keep the pump on the faster setting to trigger a let down? Maybe hand express to get things going and then hook up to the pump?

When I was pumping, I would have a hard time getting things started. So I began massaging my breast while attached to the pump. It also sped up the pumping session (win win!).

Yup, I totally remember this happening when I was breastfeeding/pumping the first time around. You need to try to get a letdown. This might be TMI buuuuuut....the only thing that helped me during those times was nipple stimulation. So I would have to "play" with my nipples to create a letdown. Sounds kinda weird but it totally worked! Just grab your nips and roll them around your fingers. haha. Seriously, sounds weird but it worked like a charm for me during those weird moments when I couldn't get a letdown!

Yes! On mornings that I have to pump before work and I have a time crunch, it happens often. I have had it happen a few other times when stressed.

What helps me is to lean forward and push the pump flanges in, and to think about milk coming out. Not too long after, letdown happens for me. I don't pump nearly as much those times, but it is better than next to nothing.

today!! I was trying to pump while DS was napping because I needed to mix milk with his solids and I could only get an ounce. It was weird. But then I always go back to the normal amounts (at least 4oz)... so I don't worry about it. Your baby is a million times more effective at getting milk out than a pump is.

I don't think I'd ever wean just for that :)

My LO is 6 months- I exclusively nursed the first 3 months , then exclusively nurse during weekends and morning and evening during weekdays while pumping 3 times during work hours. All had been fine until recently.

I am not sure if you experienced this but nowadays there would be random sessions that I can't pump anything when I could have at least get 4 oz. 90% of the time happens when it is an unscheduled session, such as when LO is on nursing strike so I had to pump. At first I thought it was stress but lately I realized I am not even stressed and still nothing would come out via pump, even when I am engorged.. Will come shooting out when I hand express though.

I am using medela freestyle. I thought it was the pump that is failing but I borrowed my friend's pump (in style advanced) and it still won't pump.

This has been certainly frustrating when LO is going thru nursing strike lately. Thank god my husband is around but if I am by myself there is no way I can handle it. I am actually seriously thinking about weaning.

Did this happen to u before? How did you cope with it and do you hv suggestions for me?

Try looking at the clock to see how long it's been between bf sessions. At 14.5w it's probably close to 2.5-3 hours depending on how much she eats at a time. After a day or two you should be able to see some new hungry cues. It sounds like it might help to try feeding her a little bit sooner - maybe just 15 minutes. If she's not really showing hungry cues that you can see consistently and if she's going 2.5 hours, for example, try offering her milk at 2.25 hours (measured start to start).

Maddox does this in the morning when he's starving from going 12+ hours from last eating. Except he starts to wail as soon as he sees me unclasping my tank top!

Anyone's LO cry until letdown? LO has been doing this since about 7 weeks (she's 14.5 weeks now), and it's beyond frustrating. I have to either deal with her cries and unlatching until I let down, pump until letdown and quickly latch her on, or pump and bottle feed. We thought once we got her acid reflux under control she'd ease up, but she still goes crazy unless she's really sleepy. It's not even like my letdown is slow- it takes about 30 seconds give or take (more when she unlatches, screams and stresses me out). I am wondering if I feed her when she's too hungry and that makes her frustrated until a good flow is going? Now that she sticks her fingers in her mouth all the time, not just when she's hungry, I really don't know the hunger cues to look for.
