@blackbird: That's exactly what I was going to say if someone asked me...that I hurt my back. It's a good thing my boss is a close friend and knew about our infertility struggles and our IUI. Had he not known our good news even he would've asked me why I wanted him to carry it.

My doctor told me no more than 45 pounds. But i lift weights regularly and 45 pounds is nothing. I haven't listened....but a tub of stuff could be awkward. I won't lift something that can't be evenly distributed

For all they know, you pulled a back muscle! No biggie

I had been tempted just to do it myself from what I read above, but my DH said NO WAY! So I ended up convincing my boss to carry it for me. It probably outed me a bit to coworkers, but oh well. Safe baby.

This is the one thing all my older relatives were always telling me I CANNOT do. No lifting anything practically! I know moms with kids already have to lift kids, babies, strollers, etc. and don't seem to have a problem, but after my m/c I was REALLY careful in the 1st trimester. Later on, I did start moving some storage bins and I move things around while I'm working on the nursery. I think it just comes down to your comfort. If you feel yourself straining or out of breath, I'd definitely say stop.

@marionberry: I haven't worried about lifting restrictions at all. I regularly lift a LOT of weight at the gym, I think once deadlifted 95lbs (while pregnant) and haven't had any issues. Check with your doc but it also likely depends on how much you were lifting before you got pregnant.

@Revel: I agree with you-- if it's something you are used to, it's probably fine for now.
I asked my midwife that question and it was basically not to lift anything crazy. But I have a bad back anyway, so that limits me more than pregnancy does at this point, in terms of lifting. I think they asked me if the boxes were ever more than 40 pounds, which they aren't, so they said to just use my judgment but not really worry about it.

Thank you guys! This has been very helpful. I'm going to see if I can get some help to carry them. If not, we do have this trolly thing I could use but it just never works very well. I'd rather be safe than sorry, since this is pretty heavy.

In the beginning of my second pregnancy, we had to move so I lifted quite a bit and I was okay but by 4-5 months I didn't lift anything other than my 30 pound toddler. At 9 months pregnant, it was so uncomfortable when he asked me to rock him to sleep, lol.

ETA: my doctor told me, as long as I'm use to carrying something heavy, then I should be okay. So, DS was fine but I was only 3-4 weeks pregnant when we had to move.

Is there a cart you could use? Or could you make more than 1 trip? Realistically I don't think it would do any harm, but it also doesn't seem like it's worth the risk.

While I think this falls in the ask your doctor category because everyone is different, I'll diverge a little from the others and say that if it's something you were carrying regularly before, it's probably fine, especially at this stage of your pregnancy. I've continued to do crossfit through pg which involves lifting lots more than the usual weight limits, and my doctors and coaches are comfortable with it and I feel great. For me I just don't do anything/stop doing things that really makes me strain or feel bad.

Also, if you have a doctor, you can probably call and ask to get their opinion. I called with a question about an athletic event I had right after I found out I was PG but before I had my first appointment.

I would be careful, it sounds like that is over a typical 20lb limit.

My friend just ended up with a belly button hernia after pregnancy because she lifted something heavy (probably her two year old). She thought her belly button had "popped" but after the baby was born it didn't go away!

I think the specific weight will depend on your body weight. If it take a lot of effort to pick it up then just ask someone to help you. In the early stages of the pregnancy some people beleive that overexerting yourself can increase chances of miscarriage, I dont know how true that is, but I know its definitely different for each individual

@marionberry: I specifically asked my doctor this and she said up to 15lbs. I weighed 125 at the time.
At first, it wasn't that bad but then at 8+ months pregnant, I couldn't even lift 15lbs if I wanted to;)

Maybe invest in a little trolly or cart to push or drag them in?

I'm new to pregnancy and haven't been to a doctor yet, so I thought I'd ask this question to those of you who already know the answer. Can you lift heavy things during pregnancy? And if so, up to what weight?

I have this huge tub of really heavy binders I carry once a month in and out of my car, then aways to the conference room at a different building. My DH doesn't want me carrying them anymore. I just want to know the risk. Thanks.
