We did one for a friend on hospital bedrest far away from home. Two of us road tripped out and set up a WebEx. Everyone sent a card with a picture of what gift was sent to her house. We had a wonderful chat. We didn't do favors there, but I did make some for a sip and see she hosted when she and the babies were finally home.

@shabang: could you go and be with your sister during this so she isn’t alone? Then you could also preopen packages for her so the whole live isn’t just her with a scissors opening amazon boxes and she has company.

And I totally don’t think you need to send a favor. Like you said these are people who would send a gift anyway.

@psw27: Glad to hear it worked out!

@Corduroy: Interesting. I think it goes along the lines of some of my thoughts about relatives that do live in the same areas gathering even without my sister. Thanks for the input.

It doesn't sound like it would work for your scenario but my mom had a long distance shower back in the dark ages. She had just moved away from all her family so they had a wrapping shower where everyone gathered to wrap gifts. They made an audio tape of the party for my mom and my grandma brought the gifts and tape to my mom on a visit. My mom still has the tape and talks about it fondly. She's kind of an introvert though. I don't know if every guest of honor would like it.

My friend did this. She was in Oregon and we all popped on FB live to watch her open gifts and just say congrats. There was no feeling of gift grab since I would have sent something anyway. I didn't get a favor and wouldn't expect one!

Does anyone have any experience doing a long-distance or virtual shower?

The situation: my sister is in Colorado, due in June with her first baby, and unable to travel before that because of medical reasons. Family is all over the US.

I'm brainstorming a virtual shower - send out an "invitation" with a date/time to go on FB live (I think everyone is on FB or at least has a kid who is), registry info, and a request to ship gifts there by that date, then my sister/BIL will open all the gifts on camera with ppl commenting as they go. I would also send a favor/treat package to each "attendee" in the mail.

I'm not worried about this seeming gift-grabby because it would just be family and close friends who would be sending them gifts anyway. But, I have so many questions. For groups of people that are relatively close, should we host viewing parties, or would that be sad to have mini-showers without the guests of honor attending? What would you put in the package to each attendee (I'm going a little nuts looking at all the ideas here: https://www.beau-coup.com/baby_shower_favors.htm), and what's the most economical way for me to ship all this? Any advice or potential issues - without someone there to parse through all the boxes and gifts ahead of time, will it just be awkward to open them all live? Should my sister pre-open? Has anyone successfully done anything similar? I'm all ears.

I voted to have it delivered after. Who doesn't love extending their birthday a few extra days?

I'd probably just have it delivered at his party. It's not that hard to grab the door and I'm sure it'd be a fun surprise for him for after the party.

We usually send each of my three nephews a little treat for their birthdays (they live in Ohio, we live in Massachusetts - so we aren't able to make it to their birthday parties every year.) My nephew's third birthday is on May 17 and I (stupidly) waited until now to order his gift - the earliest day it can be delivered is the afternoon of Saturday, May 17, on his actual birthday and during his birthday party.

So my question is - should I send it so it arrives during the birthday party (which is kind of annoying when you have lots of kids running around, and I don't want to steal the show, so to speak) or send it so it arrives the following Monday, after his birthday is over?
