@BabyPenguinXO: If you want a house and want to live in St. Matthews, you will likely pay more than $950 for rent/utilities. There's tons of charm, but it's a desirable neighborhood which drives the prices up. Another option would be to look for a duplex/apartment in St. Matthews, Crescent Hill, or an apartment in the Highlands (mostly large older homes that have been split into apartments). All of these would be smaller, but you would have proximity to Cherokee and Seneca Parks, which are beautiful. All are pretty close to downtown. Hikes Point and Jeffersontown (Jtown) are fairly affordable and have apartment complexes and rental houses.

Your best bet for a bigger house for a better price would be New Albany, IN. It's just across the river on I-64, but it's very quaint and close to downtown Louisville. Again, there would be traffic to contend with, but once construction is wrapped up next year it should be better. If you want to stay in Kentucky, the Germantown neighborhood is nice. The further out you get, the more likely you will have to drive many places like the store, parks, etc.

ETA: I've never looked in the Fern Creek/Okolona/Pleasure Ridge Park/Valley Station area, but there are nice neighborhoods over there too. There's just a lot of driving involved.

@avivoca: gotcha! We would much prefer a house but I think our budget is probably too tight for a house because I anticipate the expenses are higher for Utilities. I do have 2 cats. I would prefer an apartment complex with a playground if we didn't get a house! But we are really trying to stay under 900/950 for rent + utilities. My fiancé works away from us and so he has a 150-200 rent expense too.

I need recommendations on where to live and where to avoid.

I've heard good things about the St. Mathews area. We have two kiddos (under 2) and will be renting at first. But a good elementary school near would be nice.

We will want to be reasonable distance from Jefferson community and technical college, in downtown Louisville by the University of Louisville hospital.

Any tips or advice!?
