Thanks again for the different perspectives! They seem to line up with what I've read from other online sources, that recurrence is possible but not necessarily more probable (depends on the root cause which is often not specifically diagnosed). I guess I'll keep trying to get accustomed to drinking more water each day unless I hear otherwise from my doctors. Can't hurt, right? Right now I'm only at half a gallon on a good day :bummed:

Another vote that upping water intake helps. I needed a gallon and a half a day.

I had low fluid with both. The first time I had midwives all the way through and nobody mentioned it as an issue until we realized at 39w that my baby was breech and the OB wouldn't try an ECV because of low fluid. The second time I went for a consultation with the OB at 32 weeks (I was hoping for a VBAC but just in case) and she said I had low fluid, got me all freaked out talking about an emergency delivery, and then made me have weekly ultrasounds for the next 5 weeks. I drank 2L of water a day and got my levels up high enough that the OB got off my back.

@Mamatimes3: A gallon?!? Man, I'm feeling pretty good about myself when I drink half that. It's hard to imagine squeezing in double. I always kind of wonder, though, if my 37 week appointment had not been first thing in the morning, would I have been more hydrated and not induced that day. IV fluids had helped in the past, but I also had marginal cord insertion so I know I'll never know the true cause. Guess I'll keep trying to up my intake since that's the only precaution I can take.

Thanks for all the feedback, ladies!

I'm curious about this too. My first pregnancy I had below normal fluid levels from my anatomy scan until my water broke unexpectedly at 35 weeks 6 days. I had to get ultrasounds every two weeks. I'm not sure if the two were connected, but I'm very nervous about either or both recurring in a second pregnancy.

I had low fluid with my first but not my second! With lo1 I was induced at 37 weeks too, but w lo2 I was super paranoid but my levels were always fine (my dr checked each time). I was actually induced again for lo2 but not until 41 weeks-- she literally cooked like an extra month! My ob always told me not to worry and that it isn't a problem that usually recurs

Yes, with my 2nd pregnancy fluid levels dropped every week. I was getting weekly ultrasounds because of gestational diabetes. The week before I had him, the level was 6. I was instructed to drink a gallon a water daily. It didn't help and a week later my level was at 1.6. I had him that day (37 1/2 weeks)

With my 3rd pregnancy, fluid looked fine until my 38th week when I had her. I had actually gone into labor anyway so they pushed up my c section.

Out of curiosity, was anyone diagnosed with low fluids in more than one pregnancy? I'm trying to ramp up my daily water intake while we're TTC #2 to hopefully lower my risk of oligohydramnios this time around, but feel like I'm hitting my max intake already :bummed: I'm wondering how often people are actually diagnosed with it twice. My first pregnancy ended in an induction at 37+2 and six days in the NICU. All's well that ends well, but it's still an experience I'd rather not repeat. Hydration seems like the only root cause I can control, but maybe I'm worrying over nothing.

*I will obviously ask my doctor about my concerns if/when I conceive. I'm not looking for medical advice here, just anecdotal evidence
