Hmm, ok so I actually have a Wal-Mart maternity puffy coat from my first pregnancy that I can definitely layer under. I was afraid I'd freeze my booty off, but you ladies are helping to convince me I'll be ok lol thank you!

I'm in the NE so it's already cold here and I need a coat but I'm also cheap. I just picked up a puffer coat in a larger size from walmart for $25 to get me through. It isn't super heavy but I plan on layering with it. They had previously sold a maternity puffy coat for $20 but it got ripped during my last pregnancy and I had to toss it.

Rather than getting an expensive coat, dress in layers! Get thermal shirts/leggings and keep layering and then you can still get your cheap Walmart coat in a larger size to accommodate the bump! I love Uniqlo's Heattech!

I need help bees. We are going on a 7-10 day camping trip in December and I need a coat. I live in the desert so I normally buy something cheap from Wal-Mart and call it good, but, we're going up north and its going to be cold.

Accuweather shows its historically in the 40s for the highs and in the teens for the lows. I realize that may not be that bad to some of you, but I get cold at 70 degrees lol

Also, I'll be 21/22 weeks pregnant. I'm thinking of buying a regular coat in a larger size, but I haven't decided yet.

So, sorry for the novel, but is there anything specific you'd suggest I look for while shopping? I don't want to freeze, but I don't want to spend an arm and a leg either.

Thanks!!

I started showing earlier, but I also was much quicker to jump on the maternity clothes wagon since I knew how much comfier I would be! I stuck to flowier and longer shirts rather than fitted/ruched/empire waist ones though since that's more my style anyway plus I don't think those look good on me until I'm like way showing, like late2nd/3rd tri.

I actually started showing much later with this pregnancy than with my first. But my bloat was way worse this time. So maternity leggings and tunic style tops and sweaters were more comfortable for me in first and second trimester.
I started really showing around 23-24 weeks.

I think I wore maternity clothes sooner bc I know how comfy they are! At the same time, my wardrobe after first kid is much more forgiving so I was also able to wear a lot of regular clothes.

I did however keep all clothes from DD and gave it to a friend who then added her maternity clothes after her pregnancy and then gave it back to me for mine : )

I'm 19 weeks with my second and Ive been able to successfully hide in leggings and regular tops and a scarf but today I threw on a ruched top and it definitely looks like a maternity outfit. So while you're waiting to announce, pants are probably fine just be careful with what tops you pair them with.

I agree the ruched tops are a give away. As long as the panel stays covered by your tops, maternity pants can easily look normal.

For this pregnancy I started wearing maternity sooner. Was in a mix of maternity and larger regular pants around 11 weeks. Could only wear maternity pants by 14 weeks. I can actually still wear some of my regular tops at 17 weeks, but I look really fat in them. Since I've already announced to local family and friends, I prefer to wear maternity tops now so I don't just look chubby.

I made it pretty far with my second pregnancy wearing maternity pants and regular blousy shirts over. I did a lot of loose shells and cardigans in that time but when I told work around 15 weeks no one had guessed. Maternity tops are a dead giveaway though if they're fitted/ruched.

I showed earlier with my first, but only because it was twins that time and the second time I had more of a chubby tummy so it just looked like I was extra chubby!

I think it all depends on the cut of the maternity clothes. Bottoms should be fine. Top - nothing fitted, ruched, or with an empire waist as that will make it more obvious, but the tops that the material falls from the shoulder can actually look like regular clothes and hide a bump for a while. Of course, you can find regular clothes like that, too! I think the best bump hiding method for me has been a billowy/fall from the shoulder top with some kind of cardigan or sweater over it. Good luck and congrats!

@Raspberry: With my second, I FELT like I was showing at 6 weeks. I had to tell work at 11 weeks, a little earlier than I would have liked, because I was for sure showing.

I think you can switch to maternity pants without it being any more obvious than regular pants. Maternity shirts are a giveaway for sure!

Bonus question: if I'm not ready to announce, will switching earlier emphasize the bump/make it more obvious?

TIA!

I live in the NYC area, and my son was due in late February. I just used my regular coat and left the bottom button or two open. It was fine. I am not usually outside for protracted periods anyway.

Even if it takes awhile to lose the baby weight, I think your coat would still fit unless it is extremely form fitting.

In your situation, I would make do without purchasing a maternity coat.

Thanks everyone, definitely convinced now not to buy a maternity jacket which is great! I don't think I'll need it. As for dealing with babywearing, maybe I'll just buy a cheap winter coat in a larger size if it's necessary... or just not go out when it's very cold which is probably likely.

i wore my tried and true Jcrew long belted puffer for my entire pregnancy (I was due at the end of march, so it was COLD for my entire pregnancy in NYC). It was like the magic coat...it just kept fitting and fitting and fitting. I never grew out of it. It was my regular size. I'd look at one of those (jcrew factor sells them as well). The belt is so flattering, and the coat is apparently cut generously. Plus, you will be able to wear it forever, pregnant or not.
It fit fine after the baby was born, I lost my big belly quickly- I wore regular tops right after and mostly maternity leggings for comfort.

I have 2 coats that somehow have fit mostly over my belly throughout my 3 pregnancies (one is a Mountain Hardware fleece, one is a Marmot down). I also bought, during my first pregnancy, a nicer heavier wool coat that is more of a "swing" style, so I can just belt it above the bump when pregnant...but it's still cute belted/buttoned normally when not pregnant too.

I've always lost the baby belly fairly early/easily, and even if I'm carrying a bit of extra pudge, my regular coats have always fit fine once the baby is out.

I had a December baby in New England and did not need a maternity coat. Mostly I ran hot anyway and I got an oversized warm fleece best that I could zip
Over my belly, under my regular winter coats that didn't zip anymore. That worked pretty well for baby wearing too since the fleece was a little stretchy.

And yeah everyone loses the belly differently but you would probably be able to fit into your regular coats within a couple weeks as long as they aren't super fitted and structured. I wore mostly yoga pants, nursing tanks, and cardigans or zip up hoodies for the first few weeks.

Another option is to find a coat in a few sizes larger...I did this when I was pregnant and it worked out great. It was also interesting that the year when my son was born was the warmest on record. I was outside with no coat on in January, when there is normally snow on the ground!

So you just never know!
