DD1 sleeps on a floor bed. We coslept till 2, but started napping her in her own room with her floor bed a few months before. Love that we don't have to worry about falling out. For your much younger DS, I think if you keep his room to the bare minimum with nothing much that's unsafe, and always have a monitor or something to watch him, you can for sure try it! I think there is a HB all about this.

Ds1 slept in a for bed until he started walking around the apartment doing things at night.

Ds2 is in a crib, but mostly that was because i didn't want him accessible to ds1.

I really liked the floor bed.

@cake2017: we are on kid #2 with a floor bed. It is just a crib mattress on the floor. We baby proof the room—attached furniture, etc etc. We never did cribs so I can’t compare but I have been happy. My DD (now 6), was in it until she transitioned to a “big kid bed” at 3. DS is 28 months and happy. They both roll off sometimes but have figured out how to get back in without issues.

For DS who is currently in the bed, we have not sleep trained. I nursed him down until he was 2 and I like the transition to the floor bed more than to the pack and play when we travel. Now he lies down and I sit in the rocking chair for a few minutes and then leave.

If you are going to do a floor bed and sleep train, make sure you are comfortable with the idea that the baby very likely will spend some time sleeping on the floor instead of the bed!

We didn't do any sort of sleep training until lo was 23 months. But yes we used the floor bed

@cake2017: we started our son with a crib mattress, but after a few months he started rolling off it in his sleep b/c it was so little. He wasn’t getting hurt, he’d just get cold and wake up. We got a regular twin mattress & he still uses that.for our daughter, we started her on a twin right away and it’s been fine. Our son got a bed frame about the time he was 3 years old (we cut down the legs of an IKEA one so it’s still basically on the floor), but our daughter is still just in the mattress on the ground.

Both my kids use floor beds. My son is 5 years old & we put him in one when he was 15 months. My daughter is 2 years old & we started her at 9 months. Both of them hated their cribs and we co-slept starting from whenever they had their first wake up.
We love it. Their rooms were/are sparse & baby proofed.

@cake2017: I did it because I was ebf and it just seemed easier to lay down with them rather than transfer into a crib. And more economical since a crib is so temporary but these mattresses will eventually just go into whatever bed frame when they're older. My older daughter loooves her bed. They've never had a crib so I can't really compare but we've used a pack n play a couple of times while traveling and that's been fine.

Our little has always slept in a floor bed. Her room was just baby proofed. Worked great for us. That said we would snuggle her until she fell asleep until she was almost 2 and we coslept with her until she was 8 months. At 8 months she started out in the floor bed until she woke up and came to bed with us

Dd sleeps on a floor mat when we travel. I’ve heard of others doing this at home.

My concern is at at that age is safety you would have to baby proof everything... furniture secured to walls, electrical outlets covered, baby gate on door, nothing big or breakable to pull down (like a lamp) etc. Babies are so curious and unsteady when they start walking.

Just thinking of ways baby can get comfortable with sleeping alone. I’ve read about the Montessori Bed which led me to find the “floor bed”. LO doesn’t like the crib at all. I have to wait until he’s asleep and tip toe to lower him into it. He wakes up and we start all over. I’ve CIO before and there wasn’t success there. Now this has all been when he was in our room(crib in our bedroom). Now I am working on him sleeping in his own room alone. I know it will not be overnight but I want him to be comfortable overall. I read that making a bed on the floor has helped babies who resist the crib. Even just taking his mattress and safely setting up a bed... I don’t know. Just trying to read options. I am still working on him and his crib. He’s almost 6 months.

I’d like to hear what people think and their thoughts about this method!?! Thanks!

@Jennibenni: We got ours online at Sleep Ez. We bought our mattress there about 1.5 years ago and still love it so decided to get our kids' mattresses from them as well. Only downside is you don't get to test them out first. We got all of them with their 100% natural Dunlop latex only because the Talaylay is mostly synthetic.

We got Simmons Beauty rest (fairly firm bed with a bit of a pillow top for both boys - one is full sized and one is twin sized). This is the current model of the mattress (though it had a different name when we bought the full sized 2.5 years ago). The idea is for them to have these mattresses for a long time. DS2 will probably end up in a full down the road and DS3 (who isn't born yet) will take the twin when he's ready for a bed.

We've been looking at this too.. i'm tempted to get the Nook Pebble twin mattress for DD. Part of the issue is I need something 6" deep or less for her bedframe.

We also looked at the essentia (too soft) and naturepedic 2 in 1 Organic Cotton Ultra (it's very expensive in Canada). I don't mind paying a bit more as long as she can use it until she moves out!

I am a nut about off gassing so no memory foam for us. And it's funny you posted this because we just bought 2 mattresses today. We got firm natural latex. The latex won't grow mold or other nasty stuff if there is an accident and it gets wet.

We are going to purchase a Full bed for our guest room, and will move it into DS's room in 12-18 months when he switches from a toddler bed to a big kid bed (and then at some point our guest room will become a nursery for hypothetical baby #2).

What kind of mattress should I get? Is memory foam ok for kids? Should I get something inexpensive for now while it's a guest bed/little kid bed, then upgrade when he is bigger and heavier?

On this thread: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/do-you-have-one-of-those-fancy-mattresses#post-586302

We have a Sealy Optimum memory foam mattress, and we absolutely love it! It's a bit more pricey than most mattresses (but less than other memory foam brands), and my super frugal husband hasn't once regretted the money we spent on it. He prefers a softer mattress, and I generally like one that's firmer, but we're both very happy with this one. I have back problems, and this mattress has been great for my back.

The only downside is that because it doesn't spring back, it was harder getting in and out of bed immediately post c-section. :)

We have the Naturale latex mattress from Sleep EZ. Not sure if they still have it but we love it!
