For me, I had up to 30 days ( i think) to elect cobra. Once I elected and paid, it covered me retroactively back to my resignation date.
My benefits ended the last day at work, not the end of the month.

Yes I do believe your insurance may cover you till the end of the month. That was in my case. I was going to elect to continue cobra with cobra but ended up finding a policy elsewhere that was comparable.

@Foodnerd81: definitely I will ask my DH to check with his new employer about when his coverage starts! Good point!

@Ginabean3: OH! I see-- that makes more sense then. I'd ask your HR because unfortunately I think it varies a lot.

@MsLipGloss: has a good point-- are you sure you are covered starting at day 1 od your husband's new job?

Most insurance plans cover you until the end of the month, I think. You have up to a certain amount of time to sign up for Cobra with no penalty-- like if you quit July 16, and don't sign up until Aug, you have to pay for the whole time but you were covered from the very beginning, I think.

If you are quitting tomorrow, won't you give 2 weeks notice anyway? And then that would take you through to your DH's start date? If it were me, unless there was a strong reason to quit right away I would wait until his insurance was established or you knew for sure when his would kick in.

@MsLipGloss: yes that would be ideal...unfortunately my maternity leave ends before DH's job begins (the 13 days) and it just doesn't make sense for me to go back for 13 days when I've already been gone for 5 months...plus we are moving!

Is there any reason why you would not want to postpone your resignation until your DH's coverage kicks in? Sometimes there is a waiting period with employers before the employee is eligible for medical benefits.

Question....I plan on resigning from work tomorrow. The whole family is on my employer's health insurance. DH doesn't start his job until the 29th, and we will thn be on his insurance. Is possible to be on COBRA for just 13 days? How does it work? I went to the website and it said that your employer has 14 days to even offer it to you. I will of course eventually ask my employer when I put in my notice, but the HR isn't super competent so I thought I would ask around first. Also skipping COBRA and risking it for 13 days isn't an option. I have a LO and with my luck, something might happen where we would need to see the doctor....
