I got my BFP on my first metformin cycle. I honestly feel like it was a miracle drug for me. I wasn't temping/doing OPKs that cycle, and we just BDed as we felt like it.

So can metformin significantly shorten cycles but not help with ovulation? Are those independent of each other?

@badwolf: i'd never heard that ovulation tests don't work for people with pcos, i'll have to look more into it.

right now i have no idea if i'm ovulating, but i do know my cycle is way shorter, so it's a start i guess...

I also have PCOS with really long cycles and TTC for many years with no success. I was give clomid for several cycles but didn't get pregnant. Then started metformin and conceived the next month. I'm not positive if this was the metformin or perhaps just a random coincidence.
I went back on metformin after my son's birth and for the first time in my life have regular cycles.

I'll be exploring this same thing soon...I was diagnosed with PCOS as a teen and have been on BC for years, but starting in April we will be NTNP and TTC in the summer - I have no idea what my cycles will be like. I've been on Metformin for a year or two and it definitely helps my insulin resistance, but I don't know what effect it'll have on my cycle, or whether I'll ovulate.

I did the whole pcos/metformin cycle and it didnt work for me but one thing my fertility specialist told me is that ovulation tests dont always work on people with pcos. Mine literally never came up positive no matter what day i took them.

That is awesome! Are you being monitored? I think they can detect O with a blood test, but I don't know how that works with OPKs. There are a few bees with PCOS on here, though, so hopefully someone can help!

Some background: I went off birth control and didn't get my period for a long time so I went to the doctor on CD99 and he prescribed me progesterone to induce my period. It ended up being a 120+ day cycle. I got an ultrasound and he did see cysts and along with my long cycles he said that was enough to diagnose PCOS (he did other blood tests/hormone tests and everything was in the normal range). Then, my next cycle I went to the doctor at CD150 and got progesterone again to induce my period. This time he also prescribed me metformin. I started taking that before the beginning of my current cycle and today I just got my period on my own (for the first time off bc without progesterone)! It was a 38 day cycle, so it is still a bit long, but WAY better than prior!

Now, I still don't know if i ovulated because i'm a TERRIBLE temper.... I'm the lightest sleeper every and can't possibly always wake up in the same 30 minute window. I don't think i've ever done that. So, I was thinking this cycle i should try OPKs to get a better idea of if i'm actually ovulating or not.

Any advice? Has anyone else used metformin to shorten their crazy long cycles?

I was much more worried about taking anything during the first trimester. At the beginning of my second trimester I got a mild flu (even though I had the flu shot), and I took Tylenol to bring down my fever. Regular strength Tylenol is definitely safe during pregnancy, My OB and PCP both OK'd it.

Other than Tylenol and a few cough drops, I haven't taken anything. Not because I've been avoiding it, but I fortunately haven't needed anything.

My midwife, who is pretty conservative with meds during pregnancy, told me Tylenol is fine. I was in tears because my headaches were so bad, but I felt so guilty taking anything, especially in the first trimester, but someone on here had a good point-- there is no point in being a headache hero. If you are so miserable that you can't do other things (and in your case, you have another LO to care for) take the Tylenol. I always take the smallest dose, and only take it if the headache is really bad AND I'm not just going to bed. Caffeine will also help, as does a soft ice pack on the back of your neck.

I have also been doing acupuncture for my headaches and they have gotten SO much better. I've always gotten frequent headaches, but they got even worse with pregnancy and it really, really helped. Something to consider if it's a chronic problem.

@autumnlove: your regular doctor told you not to take Tylenol?? My doctor has said it's fine and I've taken it at least 5-6 times during my pregnancy (also for headaches). But I'll take any medication that's approved by my doctor.

I had a pretty severe, pre-existing case of GERD before I got pregnant and I was on high levels of prescription medication, and during pregnancy I've just been switched to high levels of an OTC brand, that I take twice a day every day.

But I ended up in the ER twice last year for severe pain due to a bad esophegeal stricture, so having that while pregnant would be far worse--I was in literally almost unbearable pain for 3 weeks until I could get an endoscopy and a procedure to open my esophegus back up. Even drinking water in that 3 works hurt me and I lost 10 lbs in a month (not trying to lose weight). I would rather take the meds than have that come back. =)

My doc only said not to take ibuprofen. he also okayed me to take benadryl so i could sleep. i never did though because i didn't want to make it a habit. i was planning to the night before my induction, but then my water broke the day before!

I took plain Tylenol and was told it was fine during my pregnancy. When I would get really bad headaches in my second trimester the doctor's office also told me to take a Tylenol and drink a can of coke or pepsi for the caffeine. That was the only otc med I took though.
